Before I committed to sewing my nice clothing, I purchased some used clothes at Goodwill and practiced. They turned out great and I decided to wear them as well!
I do that too. It is called a wearable muslin. Whenever you make something as practice and it looks good enough to wear, wear it with pride. You made that! And that is awesome!

Your video was exactly what I was looking for. My husband doesn't wear pullover sweatshirts. His work gave him a high quality pullover that I'm going to convert to a zipper closure. Your basting tips and how to address the neckline will help me. Thank you!! If I may, I have a tip to get over thick seams. When you get to that point, with your needle down, lift your presser foot and place a folded scrap the thickness of the seam your going to sew over behind the needle and lower your pressure foot down on it. Now your pressure foot won't bog down. Once you sew over the tickness, the pressure foot regulates it self and you continue sewing. I hope that makes sense. Happy sewing!

she wasn't trying to insult all of China-she just meant things made in China tend to be mass-produced, and when things are mass-produced they can sometimes have mistakes
@@laurarasband5584 but most items are mass produced, irrespective of country of origin. That's industrialisation!
The made in China comment IS relevant in textile goods as they use less skilled people( verses cars and sewing machines (sometimes)).
But I’ve never seen someone put a zipper in a hoodie, but I do have one that cries out for a zipper and this gives me a way to do it.
For those that has never looked inside industrial machines you would be surprised about what you will find there- “outside looks nice”. “Inside not so much” their value system and ours ARE different. That’s just the way it is. Now Japanese items way different. These items often rival our stuff. Completely different. They put quality inside as well as outside.
Now for the review… this is the first video of yours I’ve seen. As a guy (81 with supervisory/ engineering experience I sew bags, holsters and reupholster Furniture etc. ( hey ya gotta do something with your time- ya can’t golf always) I like your candor and your level of form and function is different than mine. Good job!

I've been having the same thoughts myself, that I've been waning to take a few of the sweatshirts that I have and add a zipper to them.. though at the moment my sewing skills are elementary at that. lol

Very easy to follow. I think a beginner could do it the way you showed how to baste the zipper. I don't know if I am going to try it yet cause I don't have patience and I'm sloppy with my sewing but maybe cause you did explain each step so clearly. Thanks!

Interfacing the fabric along cut edges before applying zip would improve the stitching and stabilize zip & fabric from shifting and stretching/rippling leaving a lovely flat front application.

Can you tutorial is good. It does make sense that adding a zipper will take away some circumference from the garment also adding twill tape to the hoodie seam so the zip doesn’t scratch you.

Excellent video. For the bits with 'additional fabric could you not remove some 'invisible' bulk like with denims.
You could but I didn't want to create another issue in this video, especially since it is mostly to give you an understanding of how to do it. On your own you can do what you see fit and what works for you.

Thanks much for this. It's very helpful. Just a question, if I was doing this for someone else, how would I deal with the uneven part of the overlapping hood so it looked cleaner. Is there a way to edit that a bit? It's clear that the edges of the hood weren't exactly the same in the original hoodie. Do you have recommendations? Thanks again.
Good question! It depends on the hoodie and how it was made. My hoodie did overlap so I did what I could with it to keep the edges lined up with the zipper. I tried to keep the look as clean as I could. If I were you I would play around with it to see what looks best in working with those edges. I understand it isn't the best answer but it really is dependent on how the hoodie is constructed.

Would sewing the zipper without the basting method give you more tummy room?
No, the basting method is just to help hold everything in place. The seam allowances are the same whether you baste or not.
How do you know exactly what length of zipper to buy as all sweat shirts are different
I buy the longest one. I can cut down the zipper to size if I need to. Otherwise you would need to measure the length of the front of the sweatshirt and purchase the correct size according to your measurements.

Is there a way to do this with a graphic on the front and still be able to line everything up?
You would do it the same way, but be warned that if you cut the design down the middle in half then around an inch, depending on your seam allowance, will be missing from the middle of your design where you cut it at for the zipper. There is no way to save a graphic design if you are sewing something to it like a zipper because if seam allowances.

is this possible to do completely by hand?
Yes. You can do this by hand. It might be a bit tough pushing a needle through a lot if layers if fabric though. So be aware of that. If you have a hard time get a pair of needle nose pliers. That can help to grip the needle as you push and pull, but be careful because you can also easily break the needle too.
How many inches did you leave from where you cut?
How come you sew it together at the front before adding the zip, rather than just sewing the zip right sides together to the cut edges please?
I just found it easier for me. If you prefer it the other way, then by all means, do it the best way that you feel.
I wish I’d seen your video before I did this project. My pullover sweatshirt was checkered and since I did not baste the shirt first, the checkered lines did not match when I basted the separating zipper. I had to undo and pin/baste very carefully. Your method would have kept the horizontal pattern on my shirt lined up perfectly. Now I know…THANKS!!!

How many inches zipper?
Depends on how long your hoodie is. I would take a measuring tape and measure from the top to bottom of the front. Where the zipper would go. That will give you an idea.

What is basting
Basting is when you temporarily sew fabric together so that it stays in position but it isn't sewn permanently. When you baste you use longer stitch lengths so that it can be taken out easily. Whereas with sewing permanently the stitch lengths are much shorter.

Less skilled, lower paid Chinese factory workers don't care/don't have time to make sure measurements & inspections are consistent.
Mistakes made more often find their way into retail.
Quality control is practically nada
The outside of products may look fine unlike insides. Seams aren't finished, material quality is inconsistent...
Cheaper parts are used inside appliances, tools, cameras..for the purpose
of 'planned obsolescence'
( look it up if U don't know the meaning )
They think nothing of 'stealing' American patented technology and illegally use brand names on Chinese products.
Those of us aware but willing to pay less deserve what we get but in general our value systems are different.
ps: Japanese products are usually different - higher standards mean better quality. They take pride in doing the most menial tasks as best possible.
It's reality - please 🙏 stop virtue signaling for things that don't matter!
