    My son has the cochlear implant in Toronto, Canada, in about 1983. It’s more than 38 years, but the implant suddenly burst out this year! Isn’t it supposed to last life-long? The doctor gave him antibiotics to stop the pain and pus. Now he has to wait for an operation, but don’t know how much it will cost in New York, USA. Right now I am just so worried about his health plus the (maybe enormous) sum for operation. Can anyone advise what to do? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

    In which country this technology is available, what is the cost of the operation, what is the ratio of successful operation

    • @brooketaylor6936
      @brooketaylor6936 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello,
      I am a communication sciences and disorders student in the United States and cochlear implant surgery/rehabilitation is offered here. In the US, the cost varies greatly depending on what kind of medical insurance you have and how much that insurance is willing to cover. Without insurance, the out of pocket cost of surgery and the necessary post-operational rehabilitation can cost as much as $110,000 USD. You would most likely need to see an audiologist, a hearing specialist, who evaluates candidacy for cochlear implants.
      Success of operation is greatly variable as well. We do know that post-operational rehabilitation is necessary for CIs to be successful, meaning you would have the surgery and then continue to work with professionals to learn how to best utilize the device. It is an ongoing process. If an audiologist or other medical professional does not think that a CI would be successful, they will offer an alternative treatment if possible. I know that other counties offer cochlear implant surgery, but I am not sure of which countries and how much it would cost. Here are two online resources that are great for learning more about cochlear implants in the US:
      ASHA:
      www.asha.org/public/hearing/cochlear-implant/
      ACI Alliance

    What happen to natural hearing after cochlear implant surgery?

    • @rachelyoung3553
      @rachelyoung3553 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I have found out, there is no natural hearing after implant surgery. There's no going back. (My daughter has severe loss and her former doctor was pushing us toward implants for years.) I can't cite It, but what I understand is that the electrode damages the interior if the cochlea beyond repair. That's why you must have severe to profound loss AND hearing aids don't help in order to qualify for surgery. Some docs like to disregard that second condition.

    Scary shit and even worse... that cochlear Implant is hideous, damn ugly. Poor people believe that they are amazing but they are not. It has lots of side effects plus not working well. A friend of mine has it.. and regrets it big time. She wanted to remove the whole of things from her head... except a device piece left on her skull can not be removed. Think again before you get surgery!

      Will you stop deleting the comment? LMAO
      Dont listen to him, C.I Are the best choice if your audiometrist suggests it, since Hearing aids are really limited, and C.I Can improve the life, i doubt this guy 's friend wanted to remove it , since he doesn't know anything about C.I
      He thinks That Hearing aids are still the best choice, but he doesn't know that hearing aids works until your deafness goes beyond a unsupported frequency range , Surely there are hearing aids that are more powerful as technology goes, but once the your deafness goes past the maximum supported range by all hearing aids , your audiometrist will start suggesting C.I, but hearing aids are for sure a preferred choice by everyone.
      My audiometrist suggested C.I since im profound deaf in both ears, i just got the left C.I and i have no regrets since is the best choice ever done, for my future and be able to hear again.
      The only side effect once you do C.I you won't be able to use hearing aids anymore , since C.I destroys the residual hearing left (even if the surgeon tries his best to preserve it).
