The passion you all pour into this software is so apparent and makes me so incredibly proud to be apart of the community. We love you for it! Please never change! ❤
SideFX are just good humans. Thanks for all you do. ML done ethically is the the way. I’d caught that when you’d said it in the room at SIGGRAPH, and you stand by it. The true Adults in the room, and some of the best strategic moves in every area of the industry.
The new animation / rigging system is like a dream come true. They’ve basically made animbot a native feature, added auto rigging tools to kinefx which was already revolutionary, but they’ve gone so much further. Being able to update trig’s on the fly, transfer rigs, the ease of applying mocap data while retaining all of your animation controls…. I can’t even look at other softwares now. Side fx wins.
You guys are geniuses. This is the only software that has really meaningful releases with well thought out features. Seems like you guys actually listen to what your users want! I actually see where my money is going. Why would I ever use another software? Please never change!
You all are incredible at what you do. The rapid integration of technological advancements into this software is truly commendable. Congratulations on the release of H20, SideFX.
Amazing as usual! So much new content to dive into! Thanks for all the hard work, and thanks for involving, helping and updating the community in all the ways you do
I switched to solaris as a lookdev/lighting artist a year and a half ago. I'm pretty confident in my sops skills, having the remaining tools available at that level makes me so happy. Thank you so much.
Insane!!!! Cant wait to try it! Thank you so much for your hardwork. Please share tutorials for the demos in the keynote! Especially the cave example, and whitewater...
Putting graphs in the sop context is genius, something like animation curve resampling is basically already there in sops so you just push data around. They follow their own principles to logical conclusion
Excellent release! I can’t believe it, but it will be possible to write in OpenCL almost the same way as in VEX? Or is it just a thin wrapper over the current OpenCL? Will there be appropriate documentation for OpenCL Snippet?
Very excited to try out the new conetwist SOP!!! I've been studying this for months and months now and still it was difficult to wrap my head around it. Sometimes it works but then other times it wouldn't work. Hopefully using this node, checking documentation and dissecting the asset will free me from this pain
Love it! The underlying power of the apex system will be tremendous! 😀 I also really feel like creating clouds right now... and testing Karma xpu. Great work!
This is awesome! Some great new features, I'm especially excited about the AI terrain tool, looks really cool. Also happy to see UE5 integration get's some love!
As a hair groomer, the feather tool looks promising like nothing I've ever seen. I just wish a tool for braids and dreadlocks comes next. Great job SideFX
We cannot add our own materials to Material Catalog, right? Please modify it and let us add our own materials, to use it as a material library. Also, what happens when GPU runs out of memory? Is there 'out of core' support for XPU? Like in Redshift or Octane? Amazing release! Love you guys!
With the extensive integration into game engine like unity or especially unreal engine we could say that they already have game engines tailored for houdini.
Making a new engine would be redundant. Epic (Unreal Engine) has invested into SideFX some time ago, they seem to be working closely together on many projects such as Epic's recent ML Muscle Deformer setups. They may potentially be getting help for their `Real-time Vulkan` viewport as well.
I've pondered many many years what 3D Software I want to learn in addition to my years of professional software development experience and (as a hobby) music production and video editing. I want to create artistic effects and models for games, 3D printing and visual animations. After reading and looking more and more into Houdini it surpasses the competition in many regards and by now I'm certain, that I'll invest myself into Houdini. First with the Indie license and when I manage to make any relevant money with it I'll gladly update to the full perpetual license.
love this so much, what a piece of software! would love to see a bit more love for houdini apprentice, some limitations don't make a lot of sense when learning houdini if I want to fill a houdini-based role in a company, would even pay for it if I'm just learning, something between apprentice and indie.
Houdini is the only program that gets better with use instead of worse like with other general 3d packages. I tried them all... they all pale in comparison. I'm an old school modeler from the 90's & use Houdini to design machine tools just to let you know how much power and versatility this program has. Never change SideFX!!!
Any chance the UE5/hip files for the Arid World demo @2:02:09 will be shared? I'm currently building similar tools and comparing and contrasting our approaches would be amazing :)
I'm having a hard time to decide whether to use Maya or Blender for character Animation. but houdini seems to be the answer as I am also a Motion Designer and houdini's Mograph is superb
yeah, i agree. it's just Maya is Expensive if you're not working just like in the industry. Houdini has an Indie version that's way more cheaper than maya.
Maya hasn't changed much at all since Maya 2022. Development has pretty much stopped and it's going to die out. No hope for that software, such a shame.
fantastic sidefx, thank you for the hard work!, there will be updaates on the weight paintings on the rigging side? I tried to use the biharmonic capture and fix some of with with bone paint but it was all clunky :(
Things I miss on this release: COPs revamp, sculpting, scales tools, karma baker, AI accelerated karma, gpu multithreading pyro, AI powered SOPs, Geometry CHOPs into SOPs, real time, tree tools 2, more gaea like terrain SOPs, better xform gizmos, UI refresh, dopesheet rework, direct modeling improvements, symmetry, more snapping presets, NURBS modeling, Neural VDBs, layout node improvements, what's new on vellum.
That's all cool as ever. But someone please explain to me why these guys are so diligently neglecting to show users how Houdini tools work? There is already an update of the muscle system and there is no video material about how this system works at all. Who are they doing this for? For fifty users who know Houdini perfectly, so they can read the documentation and understand everything? Why put so much effort and resources into the development of all these amazing tools and yet so neglect the video tutorials? Let's take a look at the Houdini community. Compared to other programs like blender and 3d max, it's a small community. Because there is no way to learn this program consistently and systematically. Not everyone can read and understand the documentation correctly. For this you need to be already an expert in Houdini! What should people who decide to start learning Houdini do? They should be prepared for an incredibly painful search for answers to the various questions that arise as they learn this program. But why can't the developers provide their users with enough video tutorials? What is the reason for this? Don't they realize that the Houdini community will never grow at this rate? You've spent a year developing all these tools. But who are you doing it for? Why don't you spend one week making a tutorial video for these new tools?
There are a lot of tutorials and resources on their website. They have improved on that front over the years. However, I am in agreement that more could be done. You have to remember that this application can do so much that it is not easy to... I sound like I am making excuses for a company I don't work for... I think a lot more needs to be done. The edu resources being available to everyone would be a good start. It feels like the website isn't clear in laying out a map for 'to get here, go through this.' I think your best bet is to pay money and use professional courses.
Agreed, they should at least make every scene available that appears in their videos. They are doing better in that regard but I'm still missing a lot. For example the cloud and ocean stuff. For advanced courses I think entagma is the best.
This is an update; I've come to believe that Maya and other tools from Autodesk, as well as Cinema 4D, have either halted their development or significantly slowed their evolution. As a user who has spent a decade using Maya, it's disheartening to see what appear to be minor updates being presented as major ones. Now, I'm going to invest my time in Houdini and will challenge myself to learn this tool. I appreciate the development and the wide range of tools and features that Houdini has been continuously developing over the years.
Based on Autodesk 2024 Q2 results and previous years, you can see that their revenue generated through M&E products (Maya, Max etc) account for around only 5.5% of total revenue, and that this stream is seeing little to no growth. This data does seem to reflect the apparent lack of investment and interest Autodesk has in developing these products further. Just an observation. Sidefx on the other hand are purely M&E driven and invested, as a result, we see them making great strides in the development and innovation of Houdini, which is very exciting stuff!
The passion you all pour into this software is so apparent and makes me so incredibly proud to be apart of the community. We love you for it! Please never change! ❤
There he is! This keynote is incredible, so excited for H20.
Houdini is probably the single most amazing 3D software in this world and the next. Most Amazing!

30 years of hard working, didn't give up to Autodesk to make us pray to Houdini at the end. Congratulations from heart.
