Well, in this area of the train its windy, unheated and outside obviously below -20° - no fun. I remember sitting during windstorm in the connection of two modern but overcrowded ICE high speed train cars. Even that became rather cold after some time and it was just around 0° outside and heated, but the wind of 100km/h made it worse.
Yeah just a Russian thing, even -10°C is considered hot for them
Russia think:

I motorcycled from Berlin, Germany all the way to Vladivostok and back 12 years ago. It took me 6 months. I've motorcycled pretty much everywhere in the world, Africa, China, India, the US, South America, Australia etc. Although they all left amazing impressions on me, none of them as much as Russia did.

What did you ride for those trips?
@@yellowlightingbolt A BMW K 75 S. 1991 model. Almost indestructible and highly reliable if you keep under 130 k/h. I sold it a couple of years back with over 300 000 kilometres on the clock and still going strong. The only short coming were the tubeless tyres. Tubed tyres are what you really want for trips to places where there is little in the way of technical support.
I'm still not sure I did the right thing selling it, a reliable friend who never once let me down.

Nice! I remember when i was 8 years old and visited my grand parents in Romania with a train with steam loco and wooden benches. It was a trip of 160Km but was so cold! My grandfather waited for us in the station with a sleigh and blankets. The horse wich was on the sleigh was "Roibu". I am now 65 and just want the time to go back.

So that would have been 57 years ago, right? That is hard to believe! How does Romania travel now? They obviously have not reached fuel or electricity yet...
@@realemonful When I visited Chimayo New Mexico, in the United States, in 1989, it had just received electricity in the 1960s. It was a small Spanish village established 300 years earlier to guard against Apache attacks on the capitol of Santa Fe. They still wove rugs by hand and lived the same way for hundreds of years. So, yes, it is possible. Open your mind and don't live your life a Twitter post at a time.

Russians have a lot of fortitude. The cold climate, the distances between cities, and the various unpredictable disruptions to the daily life build a highly resilient Russian character with heaps of fortitude. This is a good thing really.

I have gone by train several times in Russia. I´ve seen the same things you´ve shown. People were polite and friendly. So it was great to see the landscape through the window. Also it was great that in some stations the train stopped for nearly an hour so everyone could get off the train, buy something, walk around. Trains were slow but very punctual. It was relaxing and reliable and clean.

I took a train from mineralnye Voda in south Russia to irkutsk with family two years ago. It was amazing. Friendly, efficient, beautiful and cheap, I encourage everybody to do it at least once.
That's a long time on a train...

It looks cosy, but with so many people, it can be noisy at night without much sleep and for tall people the benches use to be tight.
@@florianmeier3186 Trains are way better than Amtrak USA coach seating. You have to sleep in a chair and get no pillow or blanket. For a decent train ride an upgrade to a higher class is necessary to be able to lay down and it's 3 or more times the price of regular coach. Russian trains look so much better.
@@evamarie6090 That is not surprising. US is not famous for its public transport while in Soviet times, public transport was a big deal as the number of roads and cars was much lower.
I'm Russian. I have loved traveling by train in Russia since childhood. As a child, I adored sleeping on the top shelf, but now that I've grown up, it's not very convenient for me to be there if you're traveling alone, because it's uncomfortable to sit at the bottom and take the place of strangers, and it's boring to just lie on top. Often people are very polite and kind, they don't mind you sitting in their place, everyone in Russia is united, but still it's inconvenient. But Russia is a huge country and cannot afford more comfortable carriages, because this will reduce the passenger capacity of the train. But Russian trains are always cozy, especially in winter and this sound of the train wheels tapping.
@@VHSKacceta During Yugoslavia when i was child and teen i loved to travel by train..they looked so similiar to this Russian trains,also layout very similar ,only that there was doors on cabins here ..but since Yugoslavia ended there was nothing invested in railway so it decline constantly and everyone stop using it and now is kind off almost dead ..i like that Russia did not stop using it and investing because is best way off travel
This is exactly how I recall the Indian Trains 2nd class sleeper tier used to look. In fact, this is superior because you have cushions. Also, the bathrooms & alleys look cleaner. The other thing is the ability to order a bed along with your ticket. In India, we have to pack our own beds. I really like your channel & would one day love to visit Russia.

@@Wild-Siberia I will. I live in the US now but even here have many Russian friends. Also, my father a long time ago had gone on trianing & lived in Moscow for a year. This was during the Soviet era. He had many good things to say about Russia & Russian peeople.

Russia and Canada have so many similarities. When you showed the window, it could have been here. I used to also walk between the train cars and in winter it's full of snow and freezinfg just like in the Russian train. They also have a shower (it's free for sleeper passengers), the hot water for tea, snacks, and the bathroom is much similar. The bunks are bigger though and 2 by 2 instead of 4 by 4 so a bit less crowded. I've actually worked as a train attendant (on the train called "The Canadian", between Vancouver & Winnipeg) just like the lady you interviewed. I stopped because it was an extremely demanding physical job (basically 6AM to midnight for 5 days in a row, on the moving train, and sometimes being called by passengers during the night!), handling heavy baggage up to 50 lbs was bad for my back, always being away from home made it also very difficult to have a life and catch up with friends with that kind of schedule. But it was a fun experience ❤️
As an Aussie couple in Australia we love watching you video's particularly the ones about the arctic towns and cities. I work with a Russian engineer and find the culture contrasts between here and there absolutely facinating. You should do a series on ex-pat Russians in other countries (like Australia)! Keep up the great work.

@@joshua9862 Of course there's much hate, disrispect and more - also before the war. Russia has a bad reputation in the West and this has been ingrained in us for generations. As we all can witness the Russian lies and crimes right now, there seems to be a good reason for the West's mentality. Unfortunately some politicians and businessmen were naive (aka. greedy) enough to think that making business with them is a good idea, even after all the wars that Russia declared on their neighbouring countries, all the assassinations, etc.
Rant: Besides that Russia is a nation with many residents who think of themselves as "strong Russians" and "strong Russia", but at the same time they have no free speech, have a mentally unstable president and have never had enough will to change this. I find this quite ironic... as if they wanted to live a melancholic life?

It looks like a lot of fun traveling on Russian trains from the North to the South. Although this video is short in duration, Eli is able to describe the atmosphere of the trip so that able to interview the conductor of the train crew. This is really a very beautiful and good video for me. Good travel coverage, I'm from Indonesia looking forward to Eli's next video show.

Doshik noodles look a lot like Ramen to me. (Ramen was invented in Japan.)
@@donaldcarey114 More specifically, it is the Korean variaton of instant ramen! "Доширак" is just Korean brand Dosirac, in the 90s it gained massive popularity in Russia and neighboring countries like Kazakhstan and eventually opened local factories.
What a wonderful experience! I'm so glad that Eli shares these travels with us! I recall taking a similar sleeper train overnight, from Ho Hot, in Inner Mongolia, to Beijing. The train was similar, but much fuller! I don't think there was any empty bunk in any of the cars. I was the only white face on the train, but the Chinese people were so wonderfully welcoming! Thankfully, that trip was not so cold. The most interesting part was trying to use the toilet on the train. It was challenging for an American to use a squat toilet in the first place, but diabolical when on a moving train! 😉

I live in Australia and I drove my Car from a town in Perth Western Australia called Mandurah all the way to Melbourne and then went on a boat called the Spirit of Tasmania all the way from Devenport to Scottsdale, this trip took 3 days and I was tired by the end of it. Russia is HUGE compared to Australia, Australia has 3 time zones but Russia has 11.
Russia looks magical, I hope one day i can have the privilege of experiencing Russia.
You didn't have to show your passport for any of it though. That's one of those little signs of an authoritarian government that might just decide to run about invading its neighbours.
I doubt your dream will be fulfilled any time soon with the change of Government, but I have a had a experience driving from Swakopmund in Namibia to the South African border and a town called Springbok where we stayed and were the only people in the hotel. The journey took 12 hours (nothing like your 3 days) but it was at 140 km/h for hours and hours with very occasional traffic in the opposite direction. Then the border at the Orange mountains. Then the speeding fine :)
My longest roadtrips are comparable to each other. I live in south central US but have family in Canada. Takes about 3.5 days to get to the west coast. It took close to 4 days for the Newfoundland trip. But I love long trips, especially if I can camp in the car instead of hastling with hotels.
Russia is only 2.223 times larger than Australia.

Eli, you are one of the reason I wish to explore Russia more than ever. Your travelog are thorough and detailed, one doesn't loose interests. I've been longing to travel on trans saiberia train from Moscow to Kamchatka that's my dream. Hopefully soon.

The production values and editing of Eli's videos are superb. She has got the perfect balance of style, information, quirkiness, observation. Most of her videos would be worthy of any BBC travelogue I've seen. I'd like to see more talking to people like the train guards - or just the passengers. I think she has the confidence - as she is prepared to film walking down the train talking about people eating, drinking, working and watching.
I tell you she is just amazing at what she does.

It's great you have such large distances and low population density in Russia, here in India it is just the opposite. We have a very high population density, because of which, even long distances do not feel that long because there are people everywhere and it does not feel like you have traveled between places. The reminder comes when they start speaking a different language every 200/300Km or so. Last year, in 2021, at our international film festival in Goa, IFFI I watched a film: Compartment No. 6 and have been intrigued about train travel in Russia ever since. I was contemplating the Trans-Siberian or BAM so it's good know they have showers. Train travel does not seem so expensive in Russia. Thanks for the info regarding the train journey.
Maybe India should plan to invade more, like Russia. Problem solved!

When I was in my 40s, I preferred the upper bunk to get away from the 'party'. But now I would prefer the lower bunk in order to get to the toilet faster. It's all about your personal preference and is indepedent of age. In general, it's a better idea for women (in particular) to travel in a 4 bed coupe becuse it's safer. Traveling in a more priavte coupe can be dangerous.
