  • Since we installed our new Genesys/S-TEC 3100 autopilot, we've received numerous request for more detailed information about this flight control system. In this introductory video, I briefly go over the following: pre-flight checks, takeoff/initial climb, roll/heading/nav modes, IAS/VS climbs/descents, altitude hold, yaw damper function, GPSS and lighting/volume control. I will do a few more dedicated videos featuring VFR flights, IFR flights/approaches, etc in the near future.
    *IAS on the 3100 is in knots and my ASI is in mph

    As a Controller that also flies. I am glad that I am not the only one that gets that " look" when you are told to go fast as possible,, now slowest practical. ( nope he didn't use that) ... Great demo on the AP. It feels like texting and flying when working on approach plates and keeping airplane level in IMC conditions. It truly is an important safety enhancing capability...

      Ha ha...the looks give it aways sometimes. I cut them the slack though....they are a VFR tower with no DBRITE. You nailed it with the texting reference. Having the 3100 has made my single pilot IMC flying so much safer and more enjoyable. Easy breezy programing the GPS, checking weather, briefing the approach, communicating with ATC, etc. You going to make it up to OSH this year?

    You’ve become my lockdown buddies! I fly a Hughes 300c and a 44 in the uk, and I am currently (was!!) fast tracking my fix wing ticket. The insight into the equipment you’ve fitted is extremely good, and the family stuff is a nice balance. You’re making my lockdown here in the uk much more tolerable! Hope you and your followers stay safe and well in these crazy times, best wishes to you all - Nick 😁👍👍

My goal was to modernize the plane with the best equipment for the value and take others with us along for the ride. I know lots of other aircraft owners are looking to upgrade and I think it's helpful to show off this stuff as much as possible. From the autopilot, to the GPS's, to other avionics, headsets or whatever. I do appreciate all the support from the viewers and as long as ya'll are enjoying the videos, we'll keep at it. :)

    Jeepers Kev... that sure is one very sweet Auto Pilot..!!! I was Navomatic 300 current which was a "coffee chucker" at best.
    It would engage in level flight ONLY - and wait until everyone had a cup of steaming coffee from the flask - and then VIOLENTLY pitch down..!! Just as you were recovering from the searing liquid - it would violently pitch up - in :altitude search mode".
    Thanks for sharing.

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha ha...too funny Kimi. You gave me a funny mental image coffee flying all over the cockpit. That hits near to me. My old 400 developed the violent pitching as well. Like being on a roller coaster. Loving having a super advanced digital autopilot that isn't trying to surprise me every time I turn around.

    • @kimicollier9846
      @kimicollier9846 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@310Pilot During one of the 100hr inspections an Instrument Tech showed me a solenoid behind the rear bulkhead that "apparently" was the cause of the pitching problem - he also gave me a can of "Pitching Preventer" (some sort of lubricating spray) with the instruction on how and where to spray before every flight - No matter how much convincing spray was applied it NEVER cleared the coffee chucking habit. The A/C was sold with the problem intact. But this made ALL future working APs so much more to me. Everytime I engaged an AP today - I always think of those days.!!

      310 Pilot so I’ve gotta ask-what was your biggest obstacle in getting more familiar with flying IFR? I’ll openly admit as a new guy I worry about spatial disorientation probably more than I should.
      I’m thinking part of that might be due to using a knee board for my iPad versus a suction mount. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks again for all of the great content. I managed one of those in the Garmin G1000 on XPlane: coming in to Chicago O'Hare in the Cirrus jet, somehow the GS wasn't engaged on an RNAV approach, I had to go around, I went into the Procedures menu, hit the Missed Approach Button, and I was gobsmacked that the plane went right into a pattern, turned me back out over the lake, and reset my
      initial approach, and then the RNAV worked just fine, captured the GPath, and that was that. Was really great.

    Excellent, love that extra camera view almost as much as the new AP. You just got another AMEN brother. That would make for a great video at night when you were explaining the button lighting at 21:15 just to show how great it looks a night. This is probably a dumb question but does this aircraft have a TCAS warning system? Another great job Kevin, you and Jamie are well on your way to being one of the top airplane channels. Thanks for taking the time to do all the extra work you do for us.

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for all the continued support! I will be sure to use the new mount from time to time to help show the avionics better. I need to do another night video as well. I don't have TCAS but I do have traffic warning. The difference is TCAS will talk with the other plane and tell you each how to deconflict and issue you a climb or descent. I still have to make the best decision to avoid the plane when I get an alert. That is one of the reasons I'm going with Avidyne's active traffic. Right now I only get planes that are properly equipped. On tomorrows flight there is a Cirrus that passes by 500 feet in front of us and he was never displayed on my current traffic system. :)

    • @66lwmorgan
      @66lwmorgan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Video! Good demo of the STEC 3100. I guess you won’t be coming to MLB to get your Avidyne installed LOL. I look forward to the Avidyne video. What made you choose Avidyne over Garmin? Can you bluetooth your FP to the Avidyne from Foreflight? I hate fat fingering 430 so I had a flight stream 210 installed during the annual. You have peaked my interest in Avidyne. I just might have to stop by their HQ. Their hanger at MLB is close to mine as well. Anyway keep up the good work.

      @310Pilot  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mark! I'd still like to take you up on the offer one day if/when we make it down that way. :) I just played with both of their equipment, listened to their sales pitch and did a bit of research and the Avidyne system just seemed more intuitive, customizable and presented the best information for me. I really like the option of knobs and buttons combined with a great touch screen for the bumpy days. The IFD comes with built in wifi and bluetooth so there's no need for a flight stream type device. It sends the info back and forth easily to the iPad. Inputting the route into the IFD is so easy and the geofill feature populates what you are looking for before you have to type it all and it shows the route on the map automatically as you are building the flight plan. When you are selecting an approach it quickly shows all the different IAF's on the map to quickly visualize the best entry. The VNAV works awesome and shows your TOD nicely. The 550 has a full synthetic vision AI that shows your route, traffic, obstructions, terrain, fixes, velocity vector/flight path marker, CDI/VDI, etc. I could go on and on. :) If you have a chance to go by there, I'd see if Dale Ferrer is around to show you their systems. He was the guy in the video and does great showing all it is capable of.

    Kevin/Jamie, awesome, awesome, awesome! It is great to see you with the new Avidyne equipment! You have some great capabilities now for either VFR or IFR flights. I hope you are able to do some upcoming IFR flights with somewhat low approaches to see the equipment in action! :-) Also great to see that safety equipment with the shoulder harnesses. One suggestion is, if you see the shoulder harness rubbing your neck raw, consider Jamie or other to sew a small cover with Velcro to attach it to the harness in the neck area from either sheep wool or silk like material. My sister made me one for my shoulder harness and it made a real difference. Again thank you for improving the VID's with the new camera equipment! Your quality has gone up immensely! Don :-) FYI Kevin...I just shared this VID with our "Avidyne Pilots Club" closed group on Facebook. The group has 581 members already. Since you are an Avidyne ower, you should join the closed membership group. There are lots of information from Avidyne themselves as well as Avidyne users on how the products are being used. Avidyne even makes new announcements about their products. We certainly welcome you & Jamie! Just go to Facebook and search for "Avidyne Pilots Club" You are already known entity in the club! :-)

    All Aboooard! And a big AMEN!
    I laughed right at 20 min when you demonstrated the yaw damper disconnect, it made those 2 loud beeps, and I thought it startled Jaime and thought at first that SHE said G@d damn her disconnect! I seriously thought just for a moment the volume of it startled her and that was her reaction! Doh!
    Then I understood it was Yaw damper disconnect. I have to say I am so amazed with the aviation tech now days, and blown away by how much these systems help pilots in so many ways, from just plowing you to relax and monitor everything during routine, to really helping during bad weather instrument flights and I I think every pilot needs a system like yours, I think during high stress times or an emergency they are life savers.
    I'm really happy you got this! I'm enjoying watching the details of how it works as I've always wanted to fly and still want to learn but at the very least I'm going to be starting to play around with x plane 11 and see what I can learn just from that.

I'll be sure to get back up soon and do a bunch of approaches...I'll do the T's, HILPT, procedure turns, missed approaches, holds, etc. Busy indeed! When we flew back from SnF, I dropped Jaime and all the gear off at the hangar and I flew it up to the shop in Burlington (Burlington Air Center) for my scheduled annual. They also happen to be the largest Avidyne dealer in the midwest (as luck would have it). We really fell in love with the Avidyne products at the show and decided there to get a full Avidyne suite. I had a long list for the shop during the annual (i.e. shoulder harnesses, battery minder, replace lifters, rework baffles, new tire, new headset jack, light strip for the panel, etc). The only things they couldn't finish was the new sun visors and the rest of the Avidyne stuff. I'm going back in a couple months to have the IFD540, remote transponder and active traffic all installed and the panels recut. We should be all done then!! :) Anywho, I plan to do some avionics related videos on some Tuesdays and continue on with the normal videos on Fridays...as much as we can. Glad you enjoyed it Tony! I do have a radar on board. Haven't been using it because there was an issue with it that has just been resolved. It will display in color on my Avidyne EX500...I'm excited to show that off. :)

    Great intro for the A/P--really enjoyed the vid and it has the capability of taking a huge load off during true IMC. How was the breakfast?? As always, thanks from Cajun Country--Gooo Tigers, and the SEC.

      Breakfast is always great there. The STEC 3100 and Avidyne IFD's are truly amazing at taking the workload off the pilot and making things much safer for the single pilot...especially during IMC. Go DAWGS!

    You: "I think this GPS Steer is amazing!"Jaime: "I don't think these ponds are usually here." Lol. Great video. Loved the in-depth look at ops using your auto pilot. Keep up the good work.
