I've been playing like 25 years and I have to tell you, I really appreciate the way you teach and explain everything. Been re-visiting some stuff during the pandemic and you're fantastic.
Thanks for making modes easy! I've been playing for 35 years and have just recently been diving deeper into theory. Your mixolydian vs Dorian video is the best explanation for application and understanding of these two modes. Thank you so much, this is how music lives, by being shared.
I've NEVER understood ANY kind of guitar theory until now.. I don't know how you do it but I must thank you for your awesome gift to an ageing Reggae guitar player! I feel musically reborn and can't wait to pick up my axe. Keep up spreading the love. We need it.. Blessings from London Brother.
You have just explained modes (in such a clear and concise way) in 12 minutes that has taken me a lifetime and hundreds of dollars spent trying to figure it all out! I love your method of teaching...THANK YOU! Donation sent!
Been playing for about 45 years ... "self taught". Over the last few years I've been trying to learn some theory in hopes of improving and breaking out of the same old boxes. Frustrating, until I found your videos. Been watching for a week or so. Your approach is what I've been looking for (i.e. something that makes sense and doesn't feel like secrets are being held back). Thank you.
I've never seen anyone else explain the modes from the perspective of chords rather than scales and the practicality of this approach is just astounding. It's helped me understand why some chords in songs I love don't fit in the "key". Yet another one of those 'best (insert topic here) videos on TH-cam'
It is great to have folks like you who take the time to teach others. This is the first time I have ever had the least bit of understanding when it comes to modes. This clears up a lot for me. Thank you!
There are so many guitar teachers and youtube lessons that just "tell you" things and then give examples and then say "practice and memorize this." After watching just a few of your videos, you really go in-depth and answer the fundamental "why's" that surround guitar playing and how to realistically approach them. Coming from a youtube-taught guitar player, you have earned yourself a subscriber, my friend. Keep up the great work!
You are the best..For years i was trying to understand the modes and this is the first time i really understand them..Thank you..Great job...Keep on rocking..
You seriously rock! Excellent teaching, always! I have grown so much in the last three weeks, exponentially! I can play some decent lead lines and I know the entire neck, using your systems. And now I think I just broke through on modes, due to your excellent instruction! I consult, teach cooking skills and run a small cooking school out of my home. I hope my teaching comes across as clearly as yours does. Thank you!!
Your lessons make me go “ah ha!” Not simple and gotta review it many times but you make things understandable. It’s like being given glasses and realizing how much you never saw before 🤩
Excellent. There are a small handful of guitar tutors on TH-cam that really get the message across to me, and you are defo one of the best of that bunch! Great lesson... ready for part 2!
Thanks Mate .. Ill be watching all your vids .. Wanted to understand Modes and keys properly and after one video its clear as a mountain stream. Really Excited. Your points about landing notes I sort of thought was right but now Ill concentrate on knowing them. :)
Just a quick note, no real order to videos unless they are in a playlist. But each video has a lot to work on and guitar is not linear. I think if you like GD, that my Althea video will help things as well. Rock on
Good gracious. I have been watching videos about scales and modes for hours today and this is the video where I finally feel like I have it figured out. Thank you.
Love how you explain major scale vs mode (even though my blender does not have a pulse mode...)Also great that you don't try to associate the modes with a mood!
This exactly. Every lesson on modes is scale based and I always tried to understand when you used the modal scale. The answer is when the chord progression is modal, ie, has a different home. I also now understand why you don’t really need to understand modes.
@@da5idblacksun It seems that is the whole thing: leaning on the home, like the A minor in a C scale, the 6th note becomes 'home', and the other notes remain the same.
You sir are the teachers teacher. I see this was published three years ago. I hope you are doing well, and blessings to you and your family. You changed my life with this.
Great lesson! This is the right way to get introduced to the modes of the Major scale, would save many people years of confusion and miss perceptions of what a mode really is.
Excellent teaching - many thanks...finally made sense and gave a name to what I've been hearing and playing - now I can really use it knowing what I'm doing!
Home defines the mode, not the key signature; The key signature doesn't dictate the mode, where you start or how you write/play the chords to define what the ear hears as HOME does. Yessssss.... Yet another "Aha!" moment thanks to your lessons. Man, o' man. THANKS! Always hearing modes described, for example, as "G mixolydian" seemed to me to imply the key dictated the mode. Sure, it dictates the chord progression, and the mode uses them, but after this, I've started thinking of it as "Mixolydian G" to emphasize the choice of how (mixolydian) to play what (G major, or whatever scale).
Because there are different ways to explain or think about modes it can become confusing. You can think of Mixolydian G as playing in G and just moving your major 7th to a minor 7th. Or you can think about it as playing in C and emphasizing the G as home. Either is good you just need to find a version that makes the most sense to you.
really... every lesson has been weaving together years of trying to figure this stuff out (and retain it). thanks for making me want to grab my guitar and release a lot of locked up knowledge. can you not sleep so you can produce lessons more frequently?!!
Thank you thank you! You taught me something Sean couldn't in his series a few years ago, it's all in the chords! I'll be using this in my writing for years to come
It's the singer, not the song. It's the teacher, not the theory. I already knew this stuff but see it in a fresh new different light. You've got a great talent for explaining this stuff Stich. An inspiration on how I'll explain this stuff to my kids. Cheers my man. greetings from downunder.
Booom... Extremely Major Progress Unlocked in my brain ! I was using modes only on a melodic point of view. Seeing this as chord progressions totally changes my musical mind!. Thanks of r the video. By the way I love all your guitar courses videos, namely your NeverLost pentatonics, it's such a powerful tool in my bag, a lighthouse in the dark ocean of all guitar notes possible.
so good the word "home" here...After years with bad teachers, I understood modal thing one day, and yes, it´s about where do you think is "home". Actually, to me there´s a very easy example: usually somebody doesn´t understand modal harmony, but can feel the difference between C major and A minor, it´s about "feel where your homer is"...well, same thing with all modes...there are not only "two homes", there are seven..anyway, workin´ on standard modal progressions keepin´ the "home" bass pedal note helps a lot. Peace
I think you’re the first person ive seen take the approach of showing the chords and not just the notes and scale. Ive only ever thought of modes as scales. Plus the examples were a huge help! You’ve got a sub 👍🏼
This is the best explanation of modes I have seen. Thanks for the great lessons. You are a blessed teacher. Sometimes, I can,t hear your voice and the guitar is a little loud; other than that, I really love all your lessons. God bless you.
this is the most and the MAJOR explanation of modes ever. Some of these guys just blabber and are very flighty on the modes. No one will ever understand. This is the best one.
Hello Ian. Well done on this video, you exploded some myths about modes being related to scales and have also finally given me an understanding as to why when someone tells me a song is in a key that it doesn't always start start on that chord. This is something which had confused me and made me feel a bit stupid when it comes to music because nobody ever explained the reason was that a mode was being applIed. This is extremely powerful stuff and great for building ones confidence. You're doing a fantastic job and I'm following your channel along with great enthusiasm since it began. I feel like you have picked up from where Justin Sandercoe took my learning to 5 years ago and taken things up a notch which is no mean feat. Keep believing in yourself and this channel will take you to some fantastic places I'm sure. Sincere thanks and gratitude, Rob in Yorkshire.
Yo, this video is exactly what I need right now (six months into learning guitar). It's time to jump into the deep end with regard to modes, if I don't wanna stick with harmonic minor forever (which I might)... and I'm glad you cleared up "the major scale", 'cause I kept tripping over that term.
Bravo my friend. I wish to extend my support to you, and others like you, who are expert in clarification and description. Guitar is difficult enough, how ever you make it painless, joyful even. I've been a pro touring/recording guitarist for more than 30yrs now, a Grad from Dick Grove School of Music, (way back in the day lol!) and taught at MI in Los Angeles. I wish I had TH-cam (people like you teaching) back when In started playing, (early seventies) I probably would have actually learned something. LOL!!! Keep up the good work. Much success to you.
I learned a long time ago that the mode is starting the same scale on a different note. When I learned this, I thought, "so?" Now, THIS makes sense. It certainly makes sense now why sometimes my solos sounded "off". I was thinking that the home chord was the key. Not anymore! Thank you.
This is excellent. I've heard those modes and practiced them a lot and never knew this. It also explains why I play several songs in G (or any key) but home/the intro chord changes.
WOW! Great lesson. Truly unique presentation of modes. Finally understand how scales and chords fit together. Only took me 40 years!...or 12 minutes 27 seconds depending on how you look at it. Seeing how you have a unique perspective into music theory I would appreciate seeing more theory lessons. Also really appreciated how you applied it to a song so I could see it and hear it musically. I'm officially a fan!
Hands down the best explanation of modes and how they relate back to their key! This video should be mandatory for anyone learning modes and why they work. BTW - You were amazing in the movies Gangs of New York and The Perfect Storm, but Boogie Nights takes the cake. ;)

aha!!!!! Once again Ian, you made the "eff this" moment turn into a , "ohhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!" moment! So, it's sort of analogous to chords (triads) when referring to inversions. I am finally starting to understand modes… I love what you said about Home not being the key… Home is what we emphasize!
I have played guitar for 36 years and have never had the modes explained so well! Thanks so much!
You sir , are an amazing teacher. Every time I watch one of your videos, bits of musical theory I know fall together like puzzle pieces.

So glad to hear.... spread the word and play on!
You are the best..For years i was trying to understand the modes and this is the first time i really understand them..Thank you..Great job...Keep on rocking..

Ian, You have a true gift for teaching! I've never heard theory explained so clearly. Thank you.
Damn! ONE video and I understand modes. What a great teacher. THANK YOU!
Simply put "Eureka".....this so easy to understand and follow....brillantly explained....

Why is it you make everything so clear ... thanks so much. The clouds are finally parting with your explanations. Just amazing.
Thanks Mate .. Ill be watching all your vids .. Wanted to understand Modes and keys properly and after one video its clear as a mountain stream. Really Excited. Your points about landing notes I sort of thought was right but now Ill concentrate on knowing them. :)

Far and away the most helpful introduction to modes that I have come across! Thank you!
I've watched so many other videos and still not understood the whole thing, and now I understand so much. Brilliant, thank yoi
thank you! a bit of clarity goes a long way!!
Your use of the word of "home" for the chord or note finally helped me understand modes.
Good gracious. I have been watching videos about scales and modes for hours today and this is the video where I finally feel like I have it figured out. Thank you.
Love how you explain major scale vs mode (even though my blender does not have a pulse mode...)Also great that you don't try to associate the modes with a mood!
I have a "Modes" theory book which does precisely that. Read the whole thing and learned almost nothing.
How about “ play in G but make A home. “ = the Aeolian / Minor on 6
Play a drone A in the bass to anchor it
This exactly. Every lesson on modes is scale based and I always tried to understand when you used the modal scale. The answer is when the chord progression is modal, ie, has a different home. I also now understand why you don’t really need to understand modes.
