    I was testing Tamron f/2.8 17-28mm, 28-75mm G2, 70-180mm and 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 when just switching over from Fuji (2 bodies + 10 lenses) to Sony a month ago with the mind set of "trinity lenses" ; however, came across this lens on TH-cam and was immediately intrigued. At the end, I purchased this lens and Sigma 16-28mm and I am extremely satisfied with the IQ and less need to swap out lenses while carrying lighter/ smaller backpack. I found myself using this lenes 98% of the time so far shooting over 20 events so far and making distance adjustment to compensate the need of extra wide coverage or zoom. I did buy a used LNIB Sony grip to counterweight the front heavy issue and found that the grip not only help to counterweight the lenes but also help my hand not to sit in 90-degree angle when supporting this Lense which also could cause corotational on the rest when holding this lenes for extended time. Thanks for your review that help me not to waste money on more lenses or lens swapping but focus on shooting. I may buy a used 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 in the future as I found it was a joy to have with excellent IQ even though it is f/5.6 at the long end.

    TH-camr Wes Perry reviewed the older Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G1 (9/3/2020) and the Tamron 70-180 2.8 (8/27/2020), and he had issues with the Tamron lenses not performing as well as native lenses with respect to eye autofocus and face tracking, and real-time tracking when the subject turned away from the camera. His comments are at the 5:48 mark of the 28-75 review and the 11:47 mark of the 70-180 review. Are you seeing any of those issues on the Tamron 35-150?
    Also, some people report that the non-native lens’s max out at 15 fps burst rates on the fast Sonys, e.g., a9, a9ii, and a1. Have you seen any sign of that on the Tamron 35-150?

    • @llStixxll
      @llStixxll 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The burst rate part is definitely true. Even some Sony lenses are limited to 15fps. And AF performance at those speeds, compared to Sony glass, is lacking. I’ve shot sports with the 70-180 on an a9 and that is my first hand experience.

      @@freeadrian1144 You’re welcome! I would definitely recommend Sony glass for more reliable focusing at high speeds but third party glass can get you about 80% of the way there. If Sony glass was 95% reliable, the Tamron was maybe 70% in the same conditions (while shooting 5 less fps)

    • @freeadrian1144
      @freeadrian1144 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@llStixxll Thanks for your observations, Jim. It sounds like the differences between native and non-native glass aren’t huge, but they are noticeable. I have this lens and like others here, feel it's an amazing lens but...it's heavy. So I reach for it when I have a dedicated shoot, and love not having to switch lenses. For casual shooting, I have the tiny Sony G primes (polar opposites) of this Tamron lens. For me it's far more interesting than a 24-70, but I do carry a 24 prime with me when I take this out.

      Both are sharp lenses...the 35-150 might be a little sharper at some focal lengths but neither one have an issue with detail. Overall image quality is slightly better in the 35-150 I'd say...it just has some more unique characteristics that I prefer. If you don't already have a long lens like a 70-200, the 35-150 is amazing for those longer shots and much more usable throughout the day than a 70-200 would be

      @@learningcameras oh well not like that ruins the video in any way lol 😂 hey in my research on this lens I saw someone mention that if budget was a constraint then to go with the canon 35-150 f2.8-4 version but adapt it on to the sony body using a canon to Sony mount speed booster and that should give it the 2-2.8 speed as well and have the advantage of the VC as well. I ask you if this would be possible? Before I go and buy the wrong gear!

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davematthew21 I wouldn't do that. First of all in my experience VC from 3rd party lenses and IBIS don't always play nice with each other lol, and using an adapter greatly limits autofocus performance compared to this native version. Massive difference for autofocus, especially with continuous AF or video. Plus if you want to use a speed booster on a full frame camera, you will have to put the camera in APSC mode which defeats the purpose. The speedbooster only works if you were using an APSC camera like the Sony a6600

    Love the original version of this lens on Nikon F mount, though it is only f2.8-4 but much smaller, lighter, cheaper. I bought it to replace the Nikon 24-120 F4, and the Tamron gave sharper results with better bokeh for sure. Also love they made it variable aperture, as having f2.8 at 35 makes it much better in low light versus a constant f4.
    The new version may be a little too big, heavy, and pricey for a non-professional like me, but it's definitely still great value and actually fulfills the goal of the original lens, which was to be an all-in-one solution for pro portrait photographers. I think f2.8-f4 just wasn't bright enough for that goal.

    The biggest problem with this lens is the 35mm on wide end. The 24-50 is a very busy focal length, meaning that either you have to carry two bodies or constantly switching lenses. Having 24-70 and 70-200 is a LOT more convenient, because 70mm is a black hole you rarely need to cross in the same session.

    • @learningcameras

      I do think that depends on your shooting style. I’d say 90% or more of my shots across all disciplines (landscape, event, portrait, travel) are 35mm or longer. I just don’t really like the wide perspective. So I think this lens offers a specialist option for people like me who prefer a normal to compressed perspective.

I currently use the 24-70 GM II and 70-200 GM II. Plus I can use the 1.4x teleconverter on the 70-200 GM II. Are you still using the Tamron? If so, how do you like it after a year?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I'm still a massive fan of the lens and optical quality is stunning. It's definitely a heavy lens though so I tend to use it when I can use it to replace my 70-200 & 24-70 with this 1 Tamron lens. I'll bring a 16-35 and the 35-150 and have all the coverage I need and amazing optical quality. The only other negative is that you can't get more than about 7-10fps on Sony cameras so even if you have a Sony A1 (which I do), you can't maximize the full speed. But most Sony lenses top out around 8-10fps so not a big deal

      Hey, I do still use and love the lens although I don't use it quite as often just because of the size. I do find the lens gives the quality of a prime lens so only get the 135 if the size/weight of the 35-150 is going to be an issue in your bag. I love the 135 but I tend to bring that focal length with me even less unless I know in advance I'm definitely going to use it. FYI, the current Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM is bested in overall sharpness by a few third-party lenses now like the Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN, so comparing the new Tamron against that current 24-70mm f2.8 GM is not comparing it against the best E-mount 24-70mm f2.8 lens, and becomes a moot point as the new version II Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM is set to drop in a few days and will be much sharper. We will wait for your comparisons with that version II Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II. Cheers and best to you.

      Been there had the Sigma, had the Tamron and even the new GM ii and went back to the old GM - sometimes sharpness isnt all! Especially when you are searching for character and rendering. In this departement the original 24-70 is the best (less busy bokeh than the GM
      ii etc..) Have been comparing my pictures and came to this conclusion ..

    • @6gwilliams
      @6gwilliams ปีที่แล้ว

      @@afrank3029 I had the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM version one and preferred the rendering of the Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN and sold the Sony one. I have not tried the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GMII, but I know and follow some great testers like Gerald Undone and he told me the Sigma has 90% of the performance and IQ of the GM II and at half the price. I will stay with the Sigma which has made stunning photos for me all around the world with my A9, A1, A7RIV, A7SIII. My Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN images pair nicely with my images from my Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 DG DN, and my Sony 135mm f1.8 GM lenses. Cheers .

      I actually talk about it in a video going live in a few hours! So as long as you have a camera with IBIS or ideally the new Active IBIS in the latest cameras, I have no problem using this handheld for run and gun video work as long as you aren't trying to hand hold it at 150mm. Sony's lens mount is called E so all E mount lenses will fit. An FE lens just means full frame E mount and this lens is an FE lens so full frame

    Hey Dan! I wanted to ask you given that I am just starting out in the automotive journalism world, that I was very heavily considering (no pun intended) the Tamron and thought that I was pretty much decided until a local camera shop had a Sony 24-105 that is very lightly used and almost half its original price at $900. I’m primarily going to be using a gimbal, and the price gap between a new Sony and a new Tamron was enough for me to go for the Tamron, but now with a lightly used Sony versus a brand new Tamron, that’s a significant price difference and this combined with the fact that I currently can’t get my hands on a Tamron anywhere lol, I’m wondering what your thoughts are on the 24-105. For some context, this would be my second lens for my A7SIII and I currently only have a 20 mm F1.8. Thanks for reading!

    Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-f/2.8 focal range including in APS-C mode:
    @ f/2.0: 35mm-39mm (APS-C range: 52.5mm - 58.5mm / Total available range: 35mm - 58.5mm)

    @ f/2.8: 80mm-150mm (APS-C range: 120.0mm- 225.0mm / Total available range: 80mm - 225.0mm)
