I saw these guys live in the 80s, yeah they were that good live. Musicians were the real deal back in the day. This was a good 15 years before auto tune was a thing.

But, these videos audio can be autotuned. Not saying they are, but can easily be done.

@@billfly2186 I don't think they had the ability to use auto tune technology in Live performances in 1981. They started using auto tune more in the mid 90s. There were harmonizers back in the 70's but the early units sounded very robotic. I don't think they were used for vocals as much as instrumental like guitar. I remember trying out an Eventide harmonizer rack unit in the mid 80s, only used it for guitar harmony's live.
In post productions they could probably have done some smudging vocals with speed, but they were using multi track tape, not digital recording like they do now since Pro Tools era.
Also, I have heard these guys LIVE many times. They were pretty pitch perfect, so much so, that I left the shows mind blown.

Great reaction video, thank you very much. I was so fortunate that I got to grow up listening to my favourite rock band Journey, especially with Steve Perry as lead singer. They're a phenomenal, legengary group, and Steve's voice is so pure, beautiful and emotional. I think you'd really enjoying watching and reacting to Mother, Father, which is also from the same 1981 Live in Houston concert. I heard it was the most difficult song that he ever sang, and it's about a broken home and the strength of the family. As well, would you please react to their music video for Faithfully, which is a beautiful power ballad, and the music video for Lovin', Touchin,' Squeezin', in which you can hear a Sam Cooke influence in Steve's vocals.

He was warned it may be an emotional experience when he took it on, and still was overcome. He actually burst into tears at times watching his younger self perform.
He had never actually watched the special before.
He only remembered how restrained they had to be that night.
"Don't move around too much, they're rolling tape, don't ad-lib too much, tape is rolling," they were subdued that night, always aware of the film crew.
Remastering this MTV special to DVD was a gift to us, but a shadow of a typical concert. I have a CD only copy to play in the car.

This was 1981. There was no auto-tune, synchronizing background vocals perfectly with live instruments was impossible. Yes, this concert was remastered, but remastering fixed all the hisses, pops, and such from the old analog tapes. They didn't need to fix the actual vocals and instrumentation (I have the original concert on VHS from the broadcast). Journey was just a very tight, very talented band. And you're wrong. This doesn't sound "exactly like the album version". It is vastly different, which is another reason why you know it's live. Steve never sang a song the same way twice. Neal never played a solo the exact same way twice. Yes, Journey has plenty of hard songs: "Separate Ways", "Be Good To Yourself", "Stone In Love", "Ask The Lonely", "Any Way You Want It", "Line Of Fire", "Where Were You", "La Do Da", "Keep On Runnin'", "Dead Or Alive", "Escape", "Chain Reaction", "Edge Of The Blade", "Let It Rock You" (a demo)", "Can't Tame The Lion", "One More"... and plenty more after Perry left.

I love that Schon gets to go off on that solo. He's said they made him redo the solo in the studio cut so many times. They kept telling him he was over-playing and the version they used was his sort-of angry ironic take at a simple solo.

It's Sunday @4:47 a.m. and this reaction REALLY jumped out at me, BizMatik‼I don't sleep much; so music is VERY important to me and when it's stuff from "back in the day," it's a special high‼Thanks BizMatik‼☮ ❤ 🎶

I saw them live somewhat later than this on the "Raised on Radio" tour. They were flawless. The venue was the old ATL OMNI, lousy acoustics, decent seats. Nothing wrong with his voice. Steve left the band at the end of the tour. He was tired of touring.

Neal Schon's a beast on guitar - that solo belongs in the top 5 of all-time. And of course Steve Perry's voice is awesome.

Steve is known as "the voice" for a reason. If you need a rock song by them listen to lay it down live with steve singing

Not Altered at all!!! That is how good they were live! They were fire with Steve Perry!!!❤❤❤❤

That was Steve's claim to fame. He sounded just as good live or better than he sounded in the studio. And you can research that for evidence. They didn't have fake mixing on stage back in the day. You either had the pipes or you didn't. This concert/tour was in 1981, and I believe that in 2012, thirty-one years later, the escape tour concerts where remastered to upgrade online sound quality.

We don't have artists of this caliber anymore here in the States. The Philippines got it so good today.

Singing competitions are their national pastime, and most grew up on this music.

They sound better live than on tape. Not just love ballads, check out After The Fall, Seperate Ways, Worlds Apart. Do you want some other bands from that era to react to?
