Don’t worry. Regardless of anything, it will remain an American Icon as long as CNN and friends says so. Nothing else seems to matter these days.

It never was for 25-plus years. Not much is made in the US for their bikes anymore. Maybe 20 percent of it is made in US but the rest, lol. That has probably changed since 2000.

It hasn't had enough domestic content to fly an American Flag sticker on it since I've worked for them, before 2000, and I'm guessing well before that. It's a sham for any motorcyclists with
an identity crisis. Put on this $80 HD T-shirt, drink enough beer to sport a gut, and you're in the club!!!

They are numbers people. That is all they care about. Serving the shareholders. HD would need to go private. Problem is, the people who started the company poured their haerts & souls into it. Maybe Willie G was the last, MAYBE. Plus you add in most of America is riding & driving something made overseas! = Not entirely management’s fault. They would need to match the current line of foreign made motorcycles plus keep some of their current line. Large companies see the writing on the wall & the direction our government is taking this country. They don’t care about the middle- middle class down unless it is about collecting their tax dollars! As sad is it may sound, it makes sense to move to Thailand from their perspective. Asia is all about status. Owning a Harley there is like owning a Rolex or Mercedes. As someone who has lived in Thailand, I can attest to the fact that they sell A LOT of bikes there, with a HUGE markup - mostly due to import duties (a CVO costs more than $100k over there). But even then, when they opened their first factory there, the prices didn’t drop, even though the import duty was reduced. People will pay anything there for that status symbol.
China is even crazier in this regard. They banned every two-wheeler with a motor from their major cities. Something about motorbikes being associated with poverty in their culture. The only exception is if you pay something like $50k for a special permit. 95% of those permits in China, are given to Harley Davidson owners.
So while in America, Harley is associated with a subgroup of Baby Boomers, in Asia they are a rite of passage into being considered high status of sorts.
So if you are making most of your money in a certain area, wouldn’t it make sense to ship your production to that area?
Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, VW, BMW, Mercedes, Honda, and other foreign manufacturers did the same thing for the U.S. Heck, many of them have models (such as the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra), which are only officially sold in North America - they don’t even sell them in Japan.
