In a true survival situation you most likely won't have a metal rack, but fresh green branches can hold your food out of the fire while allowing the heat to cook your food. Nice video.

I threw a rock or two on the sides inside the fire pit to put my pot on in order to cook since I don't have a grill. I have fire department gloves so I was able to just pick the hot rocks right out of the fire when I was done cooking. Welding gloves should also work and even good quality leather gardening gloves would probably also give you enough time to grab the hot rocks out of the fire before your hands got too hot. You might even be able to get them out with sticks but that's kind of hard to do, although I did manage it the fire time I cooked this way since I had forgotten my gloves that time. Dakota fire pits cook things damn quickly too so they're pretty awesome! I like your recipe too and I'll have to try it some time. I made baked potatoes and only used the pot for boiling water over the fire.

What's the purpose of the Dakota fire pit? Like.. why all the trouble to dig that out?

Great question! It originally originated from the dakota Indians. It’s a stealthy camp fire that can’t be seen from a distance and the second hole fuels the main fire hole with a draft which cuts down on the smoke from the fire. It’s basically a underground rocket stove.

Also, a Dakota fire is great for windy days. My favorite fire method.

The fire burns super hot too. I had water boiling in less than four minutes on mine.
