Barbara just released a new book! You can learn about it here: www.aarp.org/LoveYourAge
wow cool ball so solead
I knew there was a reason I've been collecting and hoarding dirt in different colors from around New Mexico. Now it's time to make some shiny dumplings.
Color code them!
@@mayhapsmoo that would look cool
Did you ever make them?
I just realized that they look like maltesers
Anita Ho Yum T_T
It look like elephant shit
Ikr put them both in jail
We used to do this as a form of play during the 90's when we were children.I remember if there were cracks on the surface we would just spit on it and then smoothed it out. This is kinda nostalgic.
Wow they are in New Mexico, now I know I can get dirt from my backyard and make art
Oh! This reminds me of the old days playing in the sandpit, and after using wet sand to make a mountain, you add dry sand on top and it gets all sturdy and nice.
*its that wonderful smell of wet earth after a wonderful rain storm*
That smell is called Petrichor.
no petrichor is the smell of fresh earth after it rains
That's literally what she said. "It's that wonderful smell of wet earth after a wonderful rainstorm"
The_Doctors_Tardis ah i didnt catch that i thought she just said it smells like dirt lol
after 3 years, how are you guys doing?
@@paopaothemaocow After 2 years how are you? we care about you too!!!!!
Who else came here from BuzzFeed?
Blithe ;3 may
Me
Oddly enough, we did too 😳
Me
Blithe ;3 yep
After watching this i was craving milk chocolate balls
And my Mom told me playing in dirt can't be a hobby
Lol
@ khadijah collie : dirt is definitely not a hobby it is life itself . We come from the earth and go back to the earth. Every other technological toy is jus a bad delusion
She was beside herself when he handed her the shovel. 😆
Haha gender equality seems to stop at shovels...
For me it worked perfect he gave a really excellent explanation
Tried so many times to make a Dorodango but has never worked, this is a skill I'll never learn.
Wants to make a mud ball... Makes a scene out of having to dig dirt...
This was hard to watch.
It's only half finished though...
ive been waiting for this vidio for 3 years
Wait what?
I'm so confused. First of all how did you know it was coming, and second a video about dirt balls, it's about dirt balls.
Ethann Kyle i didnt but i watched the last one like 2 or 3 years ago and ive always wanted to know more on how there made i think there beautifull that u could do this to dirt
shardae greenwood oh ok. I understand
I feel you they used to have just low quality videos of people making them not really explaining . This honestly didnt really help me out that much either tho 😂 like does the first have to have a little bit of clay in it ? How do you get it super shiny ??? Does it matter what dirt you use ?? ECT
Thank you for making all those cartoons in the 60s.
I create in a much different way. I start with very fine dirt then smooth with glass. It’s very zen regardless.
cool video!!! thanks Barbara!!!
New Mexico has clay and sand. It is really good to make a dorodango
Lilli Anderson
Your face is a dorodango
My ball feels sandy, do I need to find a more fine clay?
Now I want to make one of these too :)
It's much easier to use a pipe opening or a bottle to shape them. And they come out nearly perfect spheres
Ohh hey, that's a lot of dirt on your table.
Holy crap imagine an earthquake in that place
How cool
Hey I live in Albuquerque and legit made one of them and looked it up.
oh dang i live in the Albuquerque foothills. I should go make some dorodangos!
Did you try it?? How did it come out??
Unintentional asmr
I work at a software company and it’s very stressful
I’m a knitter😶
Same I love knitting
Mister Snow 😶
Mister Snow 😶
The smell of earth after rain is called Petrichor--Coined by scientists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas in their 1964 article "Nature of Argillaceous Odour", published in the journal Nature.
just wanted to say Hikaru dorodango means shiny dirt dumpling (it's not really a dumpling but that's the best translation haha) if it was just shiny dumpling it would literally just be a shiny dumpling that's not made of dirt :)
AARP youtube is fucking lit
We try
Just discovered your "Badass Pilot" series. Good stuff!
I was making these when I was 8 at my neighbors lake.. now I gotta take it to the final step ten years later and polish it
This man has obviously never made a cake in his life 🤣🤣🤣
nice.
Came from buzzfeed I think I'll make one
I have no idea this was a trend ,i just like to make shinny smooth balls with clay soil
What makes it shiny
So.. what do you do with them afterwards?
Wild Bee wait till it dries and polish it!
Menno Barten no.. What do you DO with them? Display them? Throw them away? Sell them?
Wild Bee probably what you just said..
Hang it & u will have a third ball
Depends. If it has sentimental meaning to you, like it's the soil from your childhood home or whatever, you can put it on a pedestal and display it. If it's just for fun.... chuck it at the dog? :/
Anyone else remember this from the inheritance cycle? I had no idea this was a real thing!
Ayy. New Mexico
🤣
2:17 so *only a liddle bid of woder?*
So, only a little bit of water?
i make these to help myself stay sober
Would somebody please tell me, how easily do these things break? I thought, something like this would be a uniques Christmas and Birthday present for some people. I just don't want to make it just to break it while I wrap it.🎁
Try and see :P
i need to comment, there are only nineteen. BTW can you release full instructions?
Ooof course they're in Albuquerque, NM. 😒 New Mexico is hippy central.
This isn’t hippie….it’s Japanese
3:26 Hubba hubba.
Came from buzzfeed
I did it with cool-aid
That poor diamond ring XD
And that kids, is how maltesers were made
How’d he make the bumpy ones
5 years late, but you get that texture by rolling the core on a wire screen before it is fully dry, and before the polishing step
ayee abq
2:33 lol, she's trying.
Me and my friends did this in school and other kids start making nations. then we started to make one then one the nations called piggy island stole our rocks then we got mad, then we mix dirt and water until i drop it then it felt drythen the next day ....
we threw it at them
bonus: we made stuff out of it like a swan, ninja stars, and knives
Thats a great memory
2:37 Petrichor
If I tell myself it’s chocolate then it’s chocolate.
Why was her shiny dumpling not shiny like the others?
o m g
a a r p
But how do u polish it ?
I'm still looking for a good video of the whole process. The best explanation I have seen so far is on here:
www.kyokyo-u.ac.jp/youkyou/4/english4.htm --> uh...some japanese professor I think? Fumio Kayo is the guy's name.
You can also reach that same site via Bruce Gardner's hompage, where he has his own explanations: dorodango.com
That first site has time estimates for the drying and some videos of different stages. I've tried it a few times, but so far, my results have been pretty underwhelming
( T __T)
Uh! Also this youtube video:
watch?v=I5p7PN4a7gg
It's a japanese step-by-step for children. Mute it and just watch. It at least gave me a good idea what to look for.
Oh also also, to give you a more direct answer: You kinda don't. Not seperately at least. Pouring the dirt over it again and again, and brushing of the excess with your hands, is a bit like using really fine sandpaper, plus it fills out small gabs in the surface. So the making is the polishing.
Kalimer0 thanks
Gavin Burnes You're welcome!
Gavin Burnes u get like shoe polish cloth and keep rubbing for a hour
QUEM VEIO PELO MANUAL DO MUNDO??
Eu, mas o método dele é muito mais difícil.
asmr🔊
Is this what old retired people do when they have nothing better to do?
I did the same thing with my excrement, it didn't work as well as dirt and my friend said it tasted horrible
😂
They didn’t explain how they get shiny
The giant malteser....
who else is here cause of buzzfeed
Alisha Arif me
Alisha Arif MEEEEE
Yup
Ferb I know what we are going to do today

Asmr
My ball breakes what to do
Try using a bit of dry/dead grass or fine straw in your initial core
I came here after watching the myth busters video on how to polish a turd... looks like same technique.
buzzfeed brought me here...
Giant whoppers
The look like Lindt chocolate candies
He would not help her with the bucket : (
Here because BuzzFeed!
I love how confounded she was when she was handed the shovel... I'm surprised she knows how the thing works.
What do you wanna be when u grow up Jimmy, I want to be a chef how bout you Sam I want to make dirt balls :/
#Maltesers
Dirt is dusty
I cringe when they rub their hands in the dirt against the plastic container. It's like I can feel the sound 😲
Samee
She forgot to take off her ring... lol
who knew that from the 4th book of eragon when orik made one of these?
i wanna bite one lol
Milk duds everywhere
Why don't they put it in an oven?
Buzzfeed is quaking
They look like chocolate
Why can't the humans just leave the things as they are.....
did not explain how to actually make them,,bah
What do you mean they didn't tell you how? Just follow along.
Y'all stole this from the dwarves of the eragon story
Yaay another inheritance fan
Old peopl um I rught
ok...they're both stoned right?
Heretic they're*
thank you
Came here from buzfeed XD
Not a proper dorodango. Original Japanese ones use mud, clay and straw. Without straw, it would fall apart easily.
I want to throw it on a wall so the dirt breaks
doesn't detail tge real thing
She is an awesome actress..
I bet this guy had a rager while she was rolling Demmmm Baaaalllllzz.
(If my wife acted like this.... 15 seconds.. done.]
What’s with men sexualising everything
