37:35 I think about this fading away of character actors constantly, because those are exactly the types of people I like to see in movies, especially older actors. Like where's the new Francis Bay or Wilford Brimley? For all the "diversity" in entertainment today, it feels much more homogenized than it used to.
It's strange to say, but this movie would make a good companion piece with the Get Carter remake with Sly Stallone. Both movies, released within about a year of each other, are remakes of dark neo-noirs from the Easy Rider/Raging Bull era with straight-up villainous protagonists on a revenge mission, and both remakes were majorly toned down from the originals to fit the sensibilities of their action-blockbuster stars. Obviously Payback was more popular with audiences, but the similarities between the two are pretty wild.
Ryan being a Jason Statham fan is my biggest take away from this. The only movie I think I've ever liked him in is Crank, he's got that Liam Nison syndrome where he's in a shitty redbone movie every other week
One of my favorite Mel Gibson movies, very fun and cool style

My favorite movie in 1999. So influential for me as a writer too.
Someone should tell Ryan that Slayground is available on Blu-ray and DVD from Kino Lorber, it's not hard to find
You guys should do a pod on "Nothing to Lose"

Papyback is gangster AF
I love this movie, though I usually prefer the theatrical cut
The theatrical cut is classic imo. Directors cut was just not as good
And with that defense of Mel Gibson's anti-Semitism, I am done following this podcast.
Good nobody will miss you

Liking Jason Statham but disliking Adam Driver is a quintessential Ryan take.
But Snatch, Transporter 1, and Revolver exist.
No love for Snatch?
@@cgo7395 Phrasing!
Alright git me on Snatch. But I did always kind of view it as way too much of rehash Lock Stock 2 Smoking Barrels, but Statham is good in it
