#smallwins. When I lost my hearing at the age of 17yrs old, I thought the beauty of guitar was forever gone. I tried many times to play what I could through my electric guitar. Some pitches and notes I could distinguish but I could not get past the basics. That being said, I put my guitar down for many years. Two years ago at the age of 39 I decided to take a chance on having cochlear implant surgery since I had nothing to lose at this point. I had bilateral surgeries on each year spaced a year apart with extensive mapping appointments to help adjust my hearing. The sounds and beauty of music came back in a way I had forgotten about. I decided to pick up the guitar again a few months ago. Tony, I had stumbled on an old video of yours reviewing the Taylor GS Mini. I was hooked and purchased it. This my first ever acoustic guitar. Then I saw your videos from acoustic Tuesday and feel I am learning so much more about music. Since I couldn’t hear that well before the acoustic guitar was cut out of my life. Now, however I love it and can’t put down my guitar. I admit my poor electric has been gathering dust. I have veered away from rock and have been exploring bluegrass and folk music because now I can.I want thank you so much for being an influence on my renewed musical journey and showing me the magic that comes from acoustic playing.

#smallwin I learned the notes on the guitar a half a century ago. I never had guitar lesson one. In the mid 60's there was no TH-cam, no internet at all. A chord book was my best friend. I wore out so many vinyl albums learning songs by ear. Watching others play also helped me a lot. Scales, (major and minor) were an early bonus as well. But, I still learn new stuff all the time. Thanks for Acoustic Tuesday!

Same with me - Mel Bay's Guitar Chord Book was my very first purchase! (Got my first guitar - new Stella Parlor - on my 8th birthday, in 1964)

Tony, I've been married for almost 40 years, and the best piece of advice, on the Nashville Honeymoon, I could offer is "Honesty". In marriage, "secrets suck", meaning that secrets will suck the life out of your marriage. I understand that you are asking mostly in jest, but this is the foundation laying period of your marriage. You will do best to lay a solid foundation, centered on honesty. Your lovely bride already knows that she married a music man, and that although she and your joint domicile will always be first, your music will always be a close second. I married in 1979, and discovered early on, just how important complete honesty (by both partners) is in a marriage. Compromise means that both parties come away from the table losing something, and in every successful marriage, compromises are made nearly every day. I only bring all of this up, because I like you, and want your marriage to succeed.

Re the Fretboard Wizard course; I joined TAC and a couple months later Fretboard Wizard #1 was launched. I was just reacquainting myself with guitar and learning the name of my strings! From there I started the daily practices and didn't recognize how really well they were laid. (after Fretboard Wizard my eyes were opened). I joined Fretboard Wizard thinking I needed to learn more to help me understand what I was doing. WOW! I not only learned how to start really 'hearing' what I was listening to, and identifying the notes and later the chords, but I ended up understanding what the fretboard is all about and actually wrote a small tune and shared it with my virtual classmates. The course is definitely something you should give yourself - not only novices like me at the time but many more seasoned musicians were in that course and raved how many new tips they picked up. The layout is 5 weeks with a private online Q&A weekly for the members taking the course and an open forum set up. Questions are answered throughout the course personally by Tony as well as give and take among the students. Well worth your time. And once you take it, you own it.

Greetings Tony and Noah from Gloucester, Virginia. Havent had an acoustic guitar for several years. After i started watching Acoustic Tuesday, i decided i needed to get another acoustic guitar in my life. After i got it home and started playing on it, i realized how much i missed it. Ive only had it for about a week now, but i can say it has been the best and most creative week ever, all thanks to your show.

Okay, so I know that Earl Scruggs piloted his own plane to concert appearances, but I don't know when he began flying. He did crash his Cesena Skyhawk on his way to an appearance in 1975.
I don't know whether or not Ralph Stanley was a licensed pilot, but he did write "Jesus, Savior Pilot Me."
I don't know if J.D. Crowe was a licensed pilot.
I do know that Johnny Hartford piloted his own plane to concert appearances, but don't know when he first started. One evening back in the mid-1970s, I was photographing Michael Murphey-"Wildfire," "Carolina in the Pines"-in concert in Columbus, Georgia. I'd previously photographed Murphey, and I had about ten Cibachrome prints of him with me. With my press pass, I was allowed into Michael's dressing room where I shared the prints with him. Upon seeing the photos, he wanted to talk with me about an album cover, and he asked me to join him for late-night breakfast at Denny's.
A litte later, I walked into Denny's and there in a booth waiting for me were Michael, lead guitarist Richard Dean, and Johnny Hartford. Hartford had flown into town in his own plane to join Michael on "Carolina in the Pines." He was quiet, polite and humble, and I was in awe to be in such company.
As someone once said about Hartford-and I paraphrase-"Johnny Hartford isn't God, but if God wanted to play banjo, he'd go to Hartford for lessons."

Fretboard Wizard has been a complete game changer for me. I studied music theory 20 years ago in school and honestly it was like a junk drawer full of knowledge that I never used. Fretboard Wizard simplified it and helped me make the transition from piano to the guitar. #thestruggleisreal

Tony - Songbirds is in Chattanooga, along with the train. I've stayed at the Chattanooga ChooChoo/Hotel and my wife liked it, so there's a idea. If you get to Nashville then Gruhn Guitars is another must-see. Or the Sun Studios tour. And they do shows at the Grand Ol Opry which could be a good evening. Then there's Gibson's factory tour... lots of romance in Tennessee..

Every note including sharps and flats has the exact same layout on the fretbord relative to their positions. I like guitarscientist.com (takes some leaning) setup to show in light font every note then octaver feature allows clicking any fret position and whatever note you click all octaves display...I am only working through 12th fret. (When I say down in this explanation, I mean toward body) So for instance if you find any note where it is on 6th and 1st string, you will find all other occurrences like this: 2 frets down will be on 4th string, 3 frets down from there on 2nd string, 2 more 5th string, 2 more 3rd string, finally 3 more frets get you back to the 6th/1st string position. I realize not even using F will be within the 1st 12 frets if you count getting back to the original position from the occurrence on the 3rd string. You need to wrap at the 12 fret counting it as a fret and wrapping back to first fret, some occurrences are on the 12 fret so next fret from there when counting is the 1st fret. Open notes do not play into this, don't count them.
For instance if you started on 11th fret with F#, the next would be on 1st fret 4th string, next on 4th fret second string etc. Once you know this pattern you obviously don't need to start on 6/1 string position. And it repeats starting on 12 fret as you would expect for a ways, but not completely as most guitars do not have 23 frets. This pattern is surprisingly easy to remember to find any note. I am sure this is obvious to many but I find it easier in some ways than the down 2 up 2 etc from vid.

Oh Wow! Robert Crumb brings back so many memories - you may have heard of a movie that came out in the early 70's - Fritz the Cat (based on strips drawn by Crumb). If not - please check it out (also, not for kids - it was rate X when it came out, today probably a lame R) Also - the soundtrack to this move featured all kinds of music from 60's: R&B, Blues, Soul, Rock - Steve (Brazoria TX)

Gordon, This is a tough one :-) My experience with Thompson guitars has been limited to their dreads so I can't comment too much on their smaller bodied guitars. Santa Cruz is a top notch builder and I have played quite a few of their models and have been impressed every single time. I think with builders of this caliber you will get a dream guitar regardless. I would definitely check out some of Santa Cruz's 12 fret smaller bodied instruments... they are mind blowing :-)

My advice, making the honeymoon for the both of you, focus on memories of your new marriage. No matter how much your guitar career/ addiction is calling (which is hard for all of us string geeks), put the honeymoon first and your wife. Only bring out the guitar to romance your newly beautiful wife only. This way the memories will be on the both of you. This is my two cents from a future clinician in psychology. Congratulations on finding love, and the wedding. Love hearing people getting married. ❤️❤️❤️
Unless this is a different from a honeymoon, then just talk about this with your wife. It sounds like fun, and the both of you should enjoy the experience 👍💞

If you're heading from Nashville to Chattanooga, you should add a stop at George Dickel Distillery (not far off I-24) and then Chattanooga Whiskey (about a block from Songbirds). tnwhiskeytrail.com also has a couple of Nashville choices and I'd highly recommend Nelson's Green Brier and Corsair (about a block apart at Marathon Motor Works). You have to make a stop at Artisan Guitars in Franklin and say hello to Bill and Ellie - and while in Franklin - stop at Kimbro's pickin parlor (www.legendarykimbros.com/) I'd be happy to buy you two a whiskey to toast your wedding at O'Be Joyful Whiskey Bar also in Franklin!! Congrats!
