Circunflexe = accent = missing letter!, so forêt = forest! FRENCH MATHS

Such a clear and effective lesson! As a retired French teacher, I appreciate when you give so much information about the "why" of the language. In Canada, the "a" and the "â" have a different pronunciation, more like the Belgian way mentioned by a previous commenter: patte = pat, pâte = paht (approximately).
For your main examples, I used to explain that the English "feast" is close to "fête", and "hostel" ( as in youth hostel) is linked to "hôtel".
That lil trick just blew my mind!!!!🤯🤯🤯🤯

Thank you so so so much for this!! I have been trying to study French for forever, so I'm starting at the basics and this description for the circumflex accent so much easier to interpret.
I am very interested in French and I know a few words. I'm learning a few words to be prepared for Highschool and Middle school. I was having trouble with pronouncing the words correctly and this helped a lot!

I love Alexa's way of teaching French. I am on lesson #17 today. I take one lesson each day or time . I have benefited greatly from the lessons. I am planning to be fluent in French in 5 years when I plan to take one year off from work and live in France for one year( my dream for over decades) . Thank you Alexa! This accent, once again, doesn't change the sound of the letter it's accenting or the word itself, but rather is just a substitution, as Alexa said. In fact, more recently, some French speakers are wanting to get rid of it since it doesn't actually do anything other than signify what the old spelling of the French word used to be since English and French both took a decent amount from Latin, which had a tendency to put silent s's in odd places, such as the 's' in "island" which doesn't actually make a sound, but is just there for some reason.
In case you're wondering, the French word for "island" is « île », which you can now comes from the English word "isle" which is another way to say, "island".

great lessons! I have been studying french for awhile now and am trying to get the sounds down. I am definitely getting better with grammar but I need to work on expanding vocabulary and pronouncing words correctly. I find mixing different teaching methods work well. you do a great job at making the student feel involved although you are looking into a camera. love it! thank you and keep it up!

In Belgium the circumflew makes us pronounce the vowel in a more "grave" way - Pâtes pronounced "Paates" in opposite to Pattes
