This can also be visualised. Aigu has a rising "dash" so the flow of e sound goes up. With Grave the "dash" is falling so the sound drops.

Alexa, you're such a great french teacher, I love how natural you are at interacting with an audience that isn't there when you filmed these lessons! Merci beaucoup
Didn't learn this during 5 years of studying French in high school and can now understand the difference from watching a 10 minute youtube video. Thank you.
Omg exact same here!! Can't believe they forgot to teach us such an important part of learning a language.
likely only because you already HAVE 5 yrs. of HS french under your belt!
Thank you so very very much Ms Alexa. I learned so much today. I took French in 1973 in college and I am amble to retain what I learned back than. You have turn me into a big fan. I will tell my friends about your lesson and encourage them to purchase your T-shirts. A bientot.
I have been learning French for 2 and a half years and I've always struggled spelling French words because I keep putting the accents around the wrong way! I just couldn't memorize where they went; so this really helped me as I can now hear where the accents go. Thank you so much! The examples were very helpful!
I am living the same problems
4:13 is the best moment why I like lessons with Alexa. She is so nice 😊👍
You are a real teacher, I learned a lot from you thanks ma’am
I do not know french. I am learning as I teach my baby granddaughter, thank you very much for all your lessons!!!🐝🍯🐝🐝🌽🍅🍐🍯🌾🐝🌸🐝
Alexa you are an amazing teacher . Thanks for the lessons and we love you
true
My friend in my French class told me about you and I'm so glad! You've made this SO simple and straightforward that I want to cry with joy and relief! I am naturally getting the French accent much more accurately just by reading the sentence you provided. Thank you SO MUCH! My passion for learning has increased and I'm already enthusiastic! You even taught me a word in my native English, 'ephemeral'! 😅
I'll be recommending you to everyone in my French class who doesn't know about you!
You explained so clear! Your classes are really helpful. Kudos! Keep up the good work.
Merci, Alexa. I just enrolled in a French class and la professeur teaches fast. Your videos will help me a lot so I can catch up :)

I really would like to understand how can anyone dislike it? Allexa explains just wonderfully! I love all her classes! Thanks, Allexa!
As a native English speaker from Ireland and Spanish speaker I must say I struggle most with the vowels in French! Thanks for your video collection, very useful!
Absolutely love your lessons!!!! Especially the in depth pronunciations of sounds.....Thank you so much for these, they really have helped me....
Your lessons to teach French are effective and well prepared and organized
Merci Alexa, communications major in college. Whenever I hear languages other than English I listen to where the stresses are and pronunciations. Another posted video was teaching grammar rules, I will look for yours, love your sense of humor!
I'm a French beginner. I have a test next week and i don't know nothing about French pronunciation. Thanks for supporting me with all these videos. I hope i can do the test well also🤗
Alexa you make it look easy. Merci!
It's so different from Spanish and Portuguese! Thank you, waiting for the rest of the accents.
It's exactly the opposite for portuguese- Already forsee a hard time doing this
Thanks for explaining everything so beautifully.
You are so thorough with the language.
Stay blessed and take care.
@7:36 she had me there 😂😂... Seriously can you?
It sounds the same to me 😭 I’m so frustrated
Omffg same
You have to look for the shape of the mouth while pronouncing, the acute accent is made when you stretch your mouth sideways, almost like smiling it sounds "wider", the grave accent requires you to just open your mouth like when you are in "aaw", it sounds "closeted", is very subtle but there is a difference
That’s how it was for me learning English, to my ears my accent was good but people didn’t understand me, I ended up writing everything to be understood.
the accent is the same and it is so frustrée
For me to make the é and è sounds i just look at the accent marking to know if my lower jaw goes in if "é" or out if "è"
I`M REVEWING MY FRENCH , AND I REALLY LIKE YOUR PRACTICAL AND PROFOUND STYLE OF TEACHING , WHICH DEPENDS ON READING THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PEOPLE AND ANSWERING THEIR QUESTIONS , THEY WOULD HAVE ASKED YOU IF THEY WERE WITH YOU . THANKS A LOT
I literally enjoy the lessons. Every free time is Alexa french time
Your way of teaching is so encouraging to a new learner. Thanks for your efforts.
You always have such great videos, but I feel the need to clarify something you didn't really touch on enough, in my opinion. When you're dealing with a grave accent ( ` ) and you're trying to read it when it's accenting 'a' or 'u', it's important to note that those don't ever change the sound of those letters. In fact, « ù » is only ever used in the word « où » to distinguish it from « ou » in writing. « À » is used a lot more frequently, but it's main purpose is to, again, differentiate between two words with the same sound in writing; in this case: « a » (third person conjugation of _to have_ ) vs. « à » (at or to).
The only part you really have to pay attention to is the fact that when « à » is at the end of a word, it signifies the enunciated syllable for the word.
I notice the video is a few years old so I wanted to drop in and say THANK YOU for keeping it up here! I am a homeschooling mom teaching French for the first time. Your videos are the most helpful ones I have found. Thank you for this great instruction!
Simply the best French teacher I have ever had.
Thank you! You makes these accent more understandable.

She always does a bravo job! kudos! very important lesson for beginners I must say .
Hey, I have a small tip for you as a teacher, which I found very helpful when learning the difference between these two accents (aigu and grave). Use it, or not! Just wanted to tell you, as a student, who used to not understand the difference at all, until....
Grave: Starts on the top left, and dives down ''into the grave''... The reason I'm telling you is because it's natural to start on the left side, because us western folks read from left to right. And I noticed you said ''grave goes from the right, towards the left''.. Which is quite confusing, I think, and hard to remember.
So, if you start on the left (like we do when reading) the accent grave dives down into the grave, and then the aigu jumps up towards the right (and here one could add a rise in pitch, I guess, just to remember it better... :-) As in ''Aiguuuuu!!''
Graaaaaave........ Aaaiguuuuuuu! (easy :-)
Thanks again - pour les vidéos.
Takk skal du ha, hilsen fra Oslo.
Tack så mycket, mange tak, gracias .

Hello guys, I'm from Normandie, France, what I can say after watching a lot of those tutorial french accent vidéos( for some reasons) is: There are less views for this one but it's the best teacher, her french is perfect and her explanations are very right. just saying...Bonne journée ou soirée à vous tous amis anglophones!( have a good day, or night, to every of you english-speaking friends!)
after thinking about it, I said to myself, you're maybe french? teaching french, in fact....So my comment seem a little dumm...? BTW I used your voice when you say "Frrrrench accent" for a scratch dj session... hope you don't disagree with if so, sorry about it and will delete the work... just tell me
plz make part 2 ..
Thanks for an excellent explanation. The difference between where and or was very helpful.
"plz make part 2 .." sounds desperate. Trying to complete the homework assignment? xD

Very well explained in my case I have a not very accourate sense of ear, so I try to learn the sound and pronunciation watching how you move you mouth and tongue. In some of the examples I cannot see it clearly couse you move a little bit your head.
THANKS SO MUCH, YOU REALLY HELPED ME.
You teach very well. Very clear!
These accents are really easy to learn if you know Chinese
why?
you dont need to know my name, its also easy if u know spanish
ļáļà ŕíìšãğêř or portuguese
My language most be easier than Chinese, all these accents are vowels in my language (Khmer). You might be easy to understand but it doesn't mean easy to make a sound!
Imperial Recker there are 5 types of tones in chinese. There are fantastically more more and more words the hell which pronouns similar, and you can only understand it, paying attention to this tones
