  • This video What is RS485 serial communication? (An industrial communication protocol tutorial) is the 4th lesson in the series of Industrial Communication Protocols. Industrial Automation can not be complete without communication and so various communication protocols were designed.
    One of the earliest protocol was RS-232. Due to the various limitations of RS-232, multiple RS protocols were designed and RS-485 is one of the most versatile protocol among them. RS-485 have many good useful features for an industrial communication environment. It can provide data rate up to 10 mbps and cable length could be up to 1200 m. Its noise immunity due to the differential signaling is also very useful in industries.
    In this video we will come to know about the features and working principle of RS-485 standard. We will also know which type of connectors are used in RS-485 compliant devices. Circuit diagram of half duplex and full duplex RS-485 networks are also explained in this video.

    Minor comment - while I understand because your well-done visuals, might be better to ensure the words match as well... "...and *a* logic zero will be transmitted when line A is... and line *B* is at 0 V."

    How is modbus protocol different from RS485 protocol ? They are both transmitted through RS 485 cables.

    Hello Sir, Thank you so much for your video. I have an inquiry I have a device working by connected an RS232 - RS485 converter, how to may check the signal of the output of RS485 is OK? how to measure the signal of RS485? my distance is 150 meter.... I am waiting for your reply

    • @eclecticclasses
      @eclecticclasses  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @Mohamed Abdallah, If you want to visualize the signal received on the RS-485 end of the converter, oscilloscope could be used for the same. For checking the data receipt, you can use any serial communication data logger / sniffer software. But to confirm that the communication is correct or not, you must be cross checking the data received with the real expected data. Once that is matched in the serial communication logger software, you can be confirm about the proper working of your converter.
      Hope, I have answered your queries.
      Thanking you,
      Eclectic Classes.

      @Mohamed Abdallah, there are many paid software , which you can use and even youTube videos are also available for them.
      I found a freeware at www.windmill.co.uk/serial.html#Tech which you can use for data logging at RS-485 terminals. Being a freeware they dont provide any technical support and even TH-cam videos are not available for them.
      Thanking you,

    Hi, may I know what software is required to write a program for the RS485?

    • @eclecticclasses
      @eclecticclasses  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      First of all thanks for watching my video. RS-485 is a serial communication electrical interface. RS-485 is used in many industrial communication protocols like Modbus, Profibus, Interbus etc. For an example when you use Siemens PLC and use Profibus as the communication protocol, RS-485 will be working as the backend electrical interface for data communication. There in the Step 7 software meant for Siemens PLC, communication parameters for Profibus communication could be set. The RS-485 part in the Profibus has already been embedded in the Profibus protocol setting while development of the Step 7 software. So there is nothing much which you can do in RS-485 part.
      Hope it will clarify you about RS-485 use.
      Thanking You,
      Eclectic Classes.

      @@eclecticclasses Thank you very much for replying! Your video was amazing,.
      The syringe pump I am using allows external control, and the manual says I could do it by connecting it using the RS485 cable to USB. But I am having trouble finding ways to code it or receive signals from the syringe pump. And hence I was looking for programs that could read in the RS485 input!

      @Edmon, If you can provide me the make and model number of the pump, I will download the manual and will try to help you in my best possible way.

      @@eclecticclasses Themake and model is Longerpump LSP01-1C. The link to the manual is: www.auroraprosci.com/PDFs/Longer-LSP01-1C-Syringe-Pump-Operating-Manual.pdf
      The information about external control is on page 11 and 12 of the manual.
      Really thank you so much! If you are busy its totally fine.

    • @eclecticclasses

      @Edmon Lee, I just went through the manual. Normally when we receive products like this we use to get a software along with the product for communication with PC. I searched for any software mentioned on their website, none is mentioned. But I got a document for frame formats used for communication on RS-485 for Longer Pumps. Document is at "de.drifton.eu/upload_dir/shop/slangepumper/manuals/LSP-RS485-Protocol.pdf".
      With these details it seems you can communicate with the pump using some serial communication / debugging software like Commix 1.4 or ComDebug.
      One more step may be useful, as the protocol used in the pump is not mentioned in the manual only RS-485 electrical interface is mentioned, same may please be confirmed with Longer and if its a non standard defined protocol, the serial communication software like Commix may be used with the defined frame formats as mentioned in the doc mentioned above.
      Thanking you,
      Eclectic Classes
