Hoooly crap. I'm a Mexican guy and also (probably) the biggest Alien film fan ever and this just blew my mind away... awesome performance. Hell, he sang it better and with even more soul than most Mexican singers I've known.
How far I am from the Land where I was born.Immense nostalgia invades my heart.and seeing myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind.I want to cry,I want to die of sorrow.Oh Land of Sun! I yearn to see you.Now that I am far from you,I live without life or love;and see myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind.I want to cry,I want to die of sorrow.Cancion Mixteca, written by Jose Lopez Avarez Music in 1912 with lyrics added in 1915,This filk song has become a ballad for anyone far from their homeland they love.
I've known for a long time that one of my favorite American vocalists,Linda Ronstadt has Mexican roots. Now I am discovering here that one of my favorite American actors,Harry Dean Stanton shares that same cultural heritage.Finding this performance by him is really a nice surprise and I think it is great.
This, too, should be made commercially available on DVD - it's a burning beauty, a moment of sheer real life. It's a once in a lifetime fantastic deal. I'm completely put out. Real human musical art. Harry Dean's there, and then some. Most amazing. Needs love every third minute - all day and night through the years aheadcoming.
I happen upon the movie Paris, Texas scrolling thru You Tube. the version by Ry Cooder is fantastic. Then found this version by Harry Dean Stanton. Harry S. sure a put a lot of feeling into his version. I think he did this song PROUD! Alejandro Escovedo's "By the hand of the Father" with a nice version. This is a great theater piece. Can't wait to see it run again on PBS--Chgo.
He is s Irish man us Irish have good history with Mexican people during the Mexican American war over 200 Irishman fought proudly with Mexican soldiers they were known as the San Patricios to Mexico they will always be Heroes VIVA MEXICO Y IRLANDA🇲🇽☘️🇮🇪
Remember this beautiful song? It's been 5 years since your comment. Cinco anos. I thought you might like to listen to it again. Buenos noches from Kentucky.
Translation(s) Translation: Song of Mixteca How far I am from the land (lit. ground) I was born, A huge nostalgia invades my thoughts, And to see myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind, I'd want to cry, I'd want to die of sorrow (lit. emotion) Oh, Land of the Sun! I yearn to see you Now that I live far, without light, without love And to see myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind, I'd want to cry, I'd want to die of sorrow (lit. emotion)
So far am I from the land where I was born! Immense nostalgia invades my thoughts, and, to see myself, as lone and dismal as leaf on the wind, I would that I'd weep ‒ I would that I'd die ‒ out of sorrow! O land of sunshine! I sigh for‐to see you. Now that, far from you, I live without light ‒ without love. And, to see myself, as lone and dismal as leaf on the wind, I would that I'd weep ‒ I would that I'd die ‒ out of sorrow!
Stanton sings the most beautiful version of this melody. Why does the melody differ so much from other versions? There are many on TH-cam, all sound very different from Stanton's. Thanks for posting this
Harry Dean sang a number of songs in Cool Hand Luke, I'm going to post them soon. Ain't No Grave, Cottonfields, Midnight Special. His performance is one of my favorite things about the movie. Sadly, he's not on the soundtrack at all. I'll give Lalo Schifrin his due, but Harry Dean should have been on there, too, along with Newman's Plastic Jesus.

C'est le moment de choisir le meilleur! nostalgie inmensa envahir mi pensamiento; y al verme tan solo y triste cual hoja al viento, quisiera llorar, quisiera morir de sentimiento. ¡Oh Terre de Soleil! Bless your eyes Harry. You now dream an entirely different story altogether.
I just watched Harry's last movie, "Lucky." It was wonderful.
