- Underwater levels and stages in video-games are always pretty creepy and scary. There's something terrifying about diving below the surface of the water in a game and not knowing what lurks below. The entirety of that game. But if I had to pick a specific moment, either the lost river, ecological dead zone, blood kelp region, or the sea emperor's lair when you come face to face with it.

I have to return to the surface frequently because of it (I play creative so I don't need oxygen, I don't think I could handle the fear of suffocation along with the depths), it feel a lot like being scared of falling from somewhere high up, but instead feeling trapped where you can't tell what direction is up

I’ll be honest. Hydrus definitely set off massive anxiety considering he goes to the bottom while you’re holding on to him. That was my first major water battle/exploration for me....

I remember one water level in particular that kind of terrified me when I was younger: the battle against Kingfin in Super Mario Galaxy!! The soundtrack of the battle didn't help with it, either...

It's very intense
it's the aggressive tone gives off "you are going to die if you don't hurry up" vibes. It kinda gets to you when your time is almost u.p. Really fits the phrase "your to slow"

Without even watching the list , for me at least, the undisputed number one was the abyss in SOMA. I literally was going to shi*t my pants when you get lost and have to follow some distant lights in total darkness while there are strong water torrents at the bottom of the sea. Amazing game , imo. Half-life 1 also deserves an honorable mention with the first alien shark part.
I find it so funny how the stuff you talk about horrifies me and yet your voice is so soft and soothing it balances it out to the point where I’m not THAT scared. You just have such a nice way of speaking.
This is a good video and all dude, but the Chills voice really takes out of the experience.

the battle against the fish in Shadow of the Colossus was a little bit unsettling, but the music playing was really good and epic. Unlike the 10th colossus who was following you through the ground and the song was extremely stressful
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future.
The whole game is an underwater level. The second level pits you against sharks. There are giant electric eels, labyrinthine caves, several sharks including the mutated variety, and aliens.
I remember wanting to play those games when I was younger. Thank goodness I never did, because they would've scared me bad. That being said, I want to find them now. I'm not as much of a wimp anymore, so I think I can handle them.

Subnautica IS horror.
I guess it’s because it’s technically not an underwater level as much as it’s an underwater environment. Guess this list excepts games that’s majority is set underwater, like subnautica.

I think some of the absolute scariest underwater levels are the ones found in Sinking City. Seeing the creatures that lurk in the deep surrounded by the endless void of water is terrifying. Every time the player looks at one of these creatures the character's sanity actually goes down, as well as my own.
I've never even heard of that game. It does seem creepy, though.
@@pundertalefan4391 Trust me when I say it can get proper ominous and creepy. I do recommend playing it, cause it's a fantastic game overall, but the water levels are no joke.

My best friends always had to do the hydrus part. I shat myself and stopped playing this game because of the creepy looking water in this game. Now I am playing the remake and its the best thing ever.

I remember the first time I encountered a water level. It was in Sonic Advance 3, and I had no idea about the air bubbles. As such, the drowning music is still rooted in my anxiety years later. Thank goodness I accidentally stumbled into one. I must've drowned at least 20 times. XD
I think a scary water level was in Batman Arkham Asylum! The killer crock level will forever haunt me

11: Fog (Plants vs Zombies)
This game is about a gardener using living plants to defend them from zombies. These levels are very stressful because some fog is covering half of the screen. Also you have to put up defenses as fast as you can, while also defending the pool in the middle, and you must have a lily pad, and many zombies can hop or fly over your plants, so these are the hardest levels to deal with in the game

The Ecological Dead Zone (Subnautica) probably deserves to be brought up.
Swimming in the ocean in the middle of the night in Ark always gives me anxiety. You never know what's down there because nothing is scripted and the creatures are always on the move. You never feel safe because in the back of your mind you know that crazy things from the abyss sometimes end up wandering a little too far.

A giant 2D eel in New Super Mario Bros scared the crap out of me as a kid.
8:23 min...now I know why I could never play this game. It's hauntingly beautiful but this would just scare me too much. I admit.
The water level in South Park: the Fractured but Whole DLC is pretty intense too!

Actually the first time you see the eel is when he is in the sunken ship and you have to lure him away!

Bruh Hydrus was nightmare fuel whenever Shadow of Colossus was the shiz back then having fear of dark deep water that is I was so scared I wouldn't go in the water xD had someone else kill him for me.
Surprisingly, the eel in the Mario water level never scared me as a kid. I just thought he was funny looking more then scary. >w< Now the shark you see in Banjo-Kazooie for the first time (Clanker) made me nope right out of there lolz. 0_o

I personally wasn't that scared by the cellar segment in Amnesia, I had already heard so much about it that I knew what to expect before I even started the game, if I had jumped into Amnesia without any previous knowledge it probably would have been allot scarier

There was an instance in half life 2 where you would come up close with an icthyosaur for only a split second then you don’t see it again no wonder valve didn’t add it
I think one great mention to this list would've been Resident Evil Revelations, that explores very well this water related terrors.
I think anyone who's ever played subnautica can agree that it's just one big scary water level.

The Great Colored Carp level from Sekiro is another one that made my skin crawl.
I hated the water areas in Soul Reaver (can’t remember if it was 1 or 2), but there was a monster/big fish in it that I hated!
And the sonic drowing music in mania is my favorite

Oh I just thought of not exactly a level but a section you could add to the list: the River Twygz from Super Paper Mario. I feel like if you’ve played the game I don’t really need to add anything else, but let’s just say it’s a creepy river in basically the video game Underworld and uh there are not nice skeleton hands down there that seem to want to drown you.
The eel never actually scared me, mostly because of how goofy-looking it is.

Omgggg I remember when I was little playing a sonic game ony GameCube (cus I had the sonic mega collection disc) and id ALWAYS get stuck on the robot/future esk looking city with the hot pink water and die, literally, every time, the music didn't help at all, it just made me anxious and freak out 🤣🤣🤣

Sharks don’t like to hurt people. The only reason they will hurt people is if they need to out of hunger or you look like a thing they eat. Or if you get in the place they love.
