    Joe,
    All these years later and I can't remember If I told you I had my K-Line J1e Hudson #5344 upgraded to PS2 by Ray Manley(Ray's Electric Trainworks). I bought a USA Trains G- scale J1e Hudson #5344 from Charles Ro himself at the York Train Show many years back. I was so enamored by it and the history behind #5344 that I had to have it. About six months later I walked into the Toy Train Emporium, a place that was near me but out of business now, and saw the K-Line J1e Hudson locomotive sitting on a display and because I already had the G-scale version, why not the O-scale! They are beautiful locos with plenty of detail and with the MTH PS2 upgrade, it is Phenomenal.

      Sorry for the overly Long wait on replying... on your upgrade, that's Awesome! I used the USA G scale as a guide for painting mine.

    Beautiful, but a total shame that the chuff sync isn’t even close to the wheel rotations. Looks almost like 4.5 or 5 chuffs per turn. I know what a nightmare it is to sync that on a non-MTH engine/flywheel.

As far as these engines go- yes- they are beautiful. I feel they are easily the best0-most detailed scale hudsons out there!

    Hey Michael! Thanks SO much for the great comment- and thanks for taking time to stop by to watch- I really appreciate the support!
    I know what you mean about the $ $. New equipment and repairs on old can get costly- for sure! You have a great collection already- with or with out a Hudson! You should post more videos of your cool collection.
    Thanks again- have a great week! :)

    hello....how do you get proto sound 2 ? is it expensive? do you have to send the engine off?? thank you

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To answer your first and last questions first, when upgrades were happening they were being sold by MTH as "kits" for $150, most people sent them off to MTH cert. Dealers so there would be an installation warranty. To answer your second question, at the time installation cost 200, so all together you would spend 350 to have the conversion completed. I did the upgrades myself to save the 200 dollars. At the time Protosound 3 came out they discontinued the PS2 upgrade kits and began selling the PS3 upgrade kits. However, there was a serious backlog of orders, and shipping was backordered by as much as 3-6 months. I began just buying cheap engines and cannibalizing the electronics and installing them into my engines. Basically making my own upgrade kit out of them. I then turned around and sold the donor engines as "non-powered" dummies. I don't think the kits are being offered anymore. So if you wanted to do an upgrade, you would have to do what I do and buy a donor engine, cannibalize it for the electronics, and do the installation yourself.

      @@ILSRWY4 there's one for sale on ebay now....but with no way to get good sound it seems like just too much money
      Which cheap engines do you buy to get the sound??
      How much did you sell the non powered dummies for?

    Those engines look great!!! Another good job on the upgrade. I have a k-line RS-3 w/ tmcc that I would love to upgrade to PS2 but I'm not sure ill be able to do it.

      @ILSRWY4  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! And thanks for watching. I did the PS2 upgrade myself... and unfortunately right after I performed the conversion, MTH came out with the PS3. bummer because I would rather have the PS3 in this Hudson. Anyway, I do all the ps2 & 3 conversions myself.

      @@ILSRWY4 I'm curious as to why you chose to pull out the Railsounds and TMCC from the 5343 instead of replacing the signal sounds on the 5344? I have both of those engines myself, having only just acquired the 5343. In fact I'm still trying to figure out why the smoke unit isn't working on that one. (I've only had a day so I have to look for a possible on-off switch.) If you ever decide to convert the 5344 to Proto 2 or 3, I hope you'll record the procedure! I've never seen it done and wouldn't have a clue where to begin. Was it a complicated job?

You did a Fantastic job on the review. Its well planned and executed and professional. I really enjoyed it. Great review! I have 5343 in K Line and 5344 and 5335 in MTH. I also have 5335 in semi-scale K Line. The K Line semi scale 5335 has feed water heater cowling at the top front of the boiler which I do not believe was prototypical. I see on your photo 5334 did not have this cowling but one of your other Hudson black and white photos shows a Hudson with the cowling. MTH's scale version of 5335 does not have the feed water heater cowling on the top front of the boiler.

    • @ILSRWY4

      Hello- You have a keen eye! The BW photo of the real Hudson #5349 @0:30 in this video is a picture of a 4-6-4 Hudson but it is NOT a J1e. It is a J-1b. J1e Hudsons did not have those water feed pre-heaters. My Model here is a J1e. I'm not sure of your semi-scale Hudson 5335? Judging by that cab number I would say that it is a J-1b and it could very well have a pre-heater. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment! Have a great weekend! :)

      Checking the NYC roster (www.steamlocomotive.com/hudson/?page=nyc) shows #5338 is a type J1e. As I said, NYC J1e Hudsons did not have those water feed pre-heaters. If you find any, they were conversions added later... I'm not aware of any though. Anyway- Here is another view of J1e 5338 with out it. digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll22/id/50649/rec/9

      markusdude1
      It really depends on the individual model. Some diesels are hard and others just fall right together. Probably the toughest thing to do is install a smoke unit. And Steam engines are the toughest of all models simply because you have the boards in the tender and the motor in the loco and have to tether the wires (plug) plus putting a smoke unit in.

    The Williams Hudson is a better puller than either the K Line or MTH but does not have as nice of detail and lettering.

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree totally... because the Williams has a huge motor in it an a tall gear. I have that one too with PS2. See my video: Williams New York Central J1e Hudson with MTH ProtoSound 2
