What is the Systema of Siberian Cossack Origin?

  • There are multiple people who teach Systema these days, all with their own version of its origins. Andrei Karimov claims that his Systema is what Cossack warriors practiced for generations.
    buymeacoffee.c...
Although he does openly admit that he previously practice Systema Ryabko and Systema Kadochnikova, he claims that he learned the bulk of his knowledge from real Cossacks. Which can be debated.
In his Systema he puts a special emphasis on the Cossack Sabre called Shashka, the Cossack whip, and the knife fighting. Basically trying to create traditional martial arts that were once practiced in Russia and Ukraine.
In his Youth he was also very fond of Sambo, and even got inspired to by people like Harlampiev to travel and research traditional forms of martial arts around Russia.
Although Russian Cossacks and Ukrainian Cossacks are rather different, his Systema Siberian Cossack has absorbed the remnants of knowledge from both, yet claiming that it was the knowledge of Siberian Cossacks.
People who watched the recent fight of DK YOO vs Brad Scott would also would probably be interested to know where DK YOO got some of his tricks from.

I've been waiting for this one! Thanks again for the great video Mykytagnosis! I agree that if Systema truly originated from the Cossacks, that would be incredible. When my Systema teacher was asked about the claim that Systema was created by the USSR and KGB his response was "I've trained in 50 year old martial arts and let me tell you, they aren't anywhere near as deep as systema."

Well said! Systema was created in the 1970 by Kadochnikov and his team, but it is also said that Kadochnikov himself had Cossack roots, so MAYBE he got taught something by his ancestors and he just developed it further? Or maybe he developed it on the basis of the internal Chinese Martial arts...or maybe both? or maybe none of those, and the truth is completely different. After conducting a lot of research, i realized that sometimes the best I can do is to assume on my observations, but that can deceiving as well.

I study Khevsur swordsmanship & have dabbled in systema. It would seem that like the Cossacks themselves, the system is built up from lots of parts that come from the systems of surrounding areas. Which makes sense when one thinks about their being at the crossroads of so many Empires & their exposure to all those different systems.

Hi Mykytagnosis, and everyone, let me clear some things :)
Actually to make it simplier to understand, Systema just means System, this is just a word. So the "Systema Cossack" just means that it's the fighting system of cossacks. Why Siberian, because Andrey is from Siberia. Because most of his cossack's teachers were from Don or Kouban. You need to understand that for Cossacks, to teach their children their way to live and to fight was the most important thing, that's how Andrey was able to learn from them. So of course in his System there is also some Sambo things. But please look at it well, there is nothing in common with Ryabko and Kadochnikov... to be there for a 2 days seminar doesn't make you a student of these schools... The approach of Andrey is, for me, the most complete that I ever saw, but of course that's for me I can understand that some people doesn't like it, but Andrey never speaks about it like "this is the best martial art ever".
Also, you use a lot of image from the showplace of Zaporozhian cossacks, and this don't have any place here, we don't work like this at all, and russians and ukrainian cossacks were very different, even the saber is not the same.
And to finish, about what you said about children and teenagers, yes the lessons are good for them to become better and grow as good people, but not patriotic! Never the task is to let them be independent, so it doesn't works with the patriotism. With this sentence I understood that you never met Andrey, you should try ;)

Systema is an invention of modern times. According to my research, its cornerstone lies in the Soviet Union. Anyone who deals intensively with the history of the Cossacks and old Russia will inevitably find that there are no historical sources for an old fighting system. What we know today is a mixture of sambo, jiu jitsu, boxing, karate etc. and close combat techniques from the Soviet era. I came across 103 styles in my research. Each was slightly different or pretended to be different. As a rule, it was based on the practical skills of the respective founders. Among them are good developments and bad ones as well. I count System Siberian Kosaken among the best. I'm not talking about exceptions here. System as I know it Combination of soft movements and variable techniques on unarmed and armed level. This combination of varied and free intuitive work makes Systema unique.

There are 2 versions, either Kadochnikov really learned Cossack techniques from his heritage, and used the bulk of it to create Systema, OR, its just used for the sake of Marketing. A martial art with exotic background always sells better.

The Soviets researched everything they had access to, and further-developed arts. Pure pieces, and optimized pieces, of various traditional arts were developed and taught to various special operations units. Perhaps different units were each taught different things.
Kadochnikov applied good-old Soviet science, but other perspectives supposedly (and improvably) take from some Cossack lineage, the Bogatyr, or a family art that survived the Soviets in secret.

Systema is a difficult thing to explain. For example, as it was originally intended, it was never meant to be a standalone martial art. Systema was always meant to be a set of principles developed by Aleksei Kadochnikov and his team in the 1970s. The people to whom he taught Systema were already highly skilled martial artists in styles such as Operational Karate, Sambo, Boxing, Judo, etc. Systema studies were meant to further develop them as individuals and fighters, but opening their other senses, teaching them about softness, human psychology, and advanced body mechanics. Think of it as something like PhD level.
These days, for marketing purposes it is being taught as a standalone martial art...and that's just wrong.

@@mikitadou thanks in my years of martial arts I’ve not come across anyone that could really explain it. Most of the stuff I’ve seen are just tricks for demo’s. They wouldn’t work in a real fight. I’m sure there is something to it or it wouldn’t have so many followers. It’s easy to fool a few but systema has many high level people promoting it.
