Thanks for the reminder...must get soap made for Christmas! The clove is most likely the culprit and not the Orange. Clove and cinnamon behave the same. I've had issues with both when i First started making soap. Also, I'm not sure how long your soap sat before you fixed it but saponification is complete in 24 to 48 hours. The rest of the month long curing time is to dry the bars so they are hard and last longer.
Thank you for all the great videos!

I only know a little tiny bit about soap making. But my guess it would be very similar to cheese making in the sense that citrus oils are possibly a lot like citric acid in curdling milk to make cheese. A little less would be better than a whole lot. Also there is something to clove oil ... Other than it's good for toothaches... I can't remember off the top of my head right now. I love how the whole soap making is like playing chemist. Very intrigued. However I'm going to be using my lye to learn how to make homemade corn tortillas with dry corn. Thank you for sharing. Love it, take care!

You do such a good job on your demonstrations. I've helped a little when my friend makes soap, but keep putting off trying it by myself. I'm looking forward to seeing the final review of the rebatching.

When I work with lye, I set the container in a bowl of ice, keeping down the temps. It keeps everything creamy white. Oh, and I pre-measure and freeze the goat’s milk in bags beforehand. Brambleberry’s website has a good lye/oil/fragrance calculator!

If you freeze your milk in ice cube trays and add the lye slowly to them to melt the milk you won’t burn the milk. To keep it really white I also put my bowl in another bowl with ice to keep everything really cool.

Curdling- ricing. Those tried to gel, you can fix that by placing them in a warm oven, but keeping an eye on them. It shouldn’t take more than 10/15 min.

Andrea, thank you for the instructional video. I will be starting my soap batches this week in preparation for the holidays. We are now in our second month receiving raw cows milk and this will be another way to use some of it. I am assuming that you use milk that has not had the cream separated off as needing the fat?
Thanks for the videos and all the hard work,

Working with lye is not a big deal as long as you're wearing the correct personal protective equipment - gloves and goggles - long sleeves and a long apron or long pants so no skin is exposed. That said, one thing you mentioned is only partially correct. While it's true that acid and lye neutralize each other, they have to be the same concentration for this to work. 5% vinegar from the grocery isn't strong enough to neutralize the concentration of lye we're using making soap. You're better off to run to the sink and flood the area with running water for 15 minutes or so. Every lab I ever worked in had a shower for this purpose.

@@VWFamilyFarm I really hope to have helped. I'm not trying to be a smart -"A" little old obnoxious lady, though to someone who hasn't met me, they might think that. I'd hate to think of you getting a lye burn. I knew a girl in graduate school who had done what we've all been told not to do and added water to lye. It exploded all over her face and was really, really terrible and she ended up with severe burns. She had to wear compression bandages - looked like scuba suit. Of course a little splash of a lower concentration than what that girl experienced wouldn't result in the kind of burns she had, but it still helps to be prepared. I've heard the same thing you said about using vinegar in multiple places, and you know how hearing the same wrong thing in multiple places turns it into a truth. And it makes total sense! We all know acid and base neutralize one another, right? So, I did the math using your recipe so you could really see why vinegar won't help enough.
Basic formula for percent: grams per 100 ml equals percent
A liter (1000 ml) of distilled water weighs 1 kg (1000 g), so one milliliter of distilled water equals one gram
I actually weighed out 18 oz of milk and then measured it to see if the volume was the same as it would be for water, and it was close enough, so I made the assumption than a gram of milk would be equivalent to a gram of water and equal the same thing in milliliters. Next I used my conversion app to convert ounces to grams.
      lye - 6 oz = 170 g
      water - 6 oz = 170 g = ml
      milk - 18 oz -= 510 g = ml
total volume liquid - 680 ml
      calculate grams per ml
      170 g divided by 680 ml = 0.25 grams per 1 ml
      0.25g / 1ml X 100 / 100 = 25g / 100ml
You have a 25% lye solution!!!!!
You know, now that I think about this, I'm going to do a video about this! Thanks for the ideal!

Do not use vinegar on a lye burn. Adding vinegar (an acid) to lye (a base) creates a chemical reaction that releases more heat. Additionally, the act of putting vinegar on a lye burn hurts. Just use water as the MSDS sheet suggests. You need to mix the lye water in a well-ventilated area. Some soapers even wear a mask when mixing the lye water. The fumes will burn your lungs. Also, you should not be using glass for your lye water. Stainless steel or #5 plastic is the best. The lye water can and will etch the glass through time and the glass can and will shatter.

Hmm that's interesting. Thanks. Vinegar has stopped it immediately but I will look into it.

Probably went to trace too fast. Different scents and oils that you put in it to make it smell nice will affect the time that it goes to trace. Essentially, it seized up.
