Chris, I would have to add an additional tip that is important particularly in the state I live in: know your state's gun laws. And as a follow-on, the gun store attendant is not a lawyer so it would advisable not to ask him/her for any legal advice. In the vein of "doing your research" for concealed carry, for instance, look up what you are allowed to purchase, if you allowed to carry and, if you can, where can you carry. Some states even place restrictions on ammunition.

I'm the gun collector in the family. The first training is safety training! And a lot of ranges have rentals. The $30 to rent a gun is cheaper than a $600 mistake.
Home defense gun is a Ruger Redhawk in 44 mag.
    Winter carry is a CZP10C.
Summer carry is a Sig P365.

And if people ask you to go to the range please take them. It’s an investment. Taking people shooting makes new shooters.
    Good video thank you

Great segment Chris. I wish I would have had you when I first purchased in many years when the pandemic hit. You should do a follow up segment for buying your first AR 15 that is the next firearm after a handgun when someone gets in the hobby.

All good info Chris, I'm old school, got my first firearm in 1966, I'm also a fan of Revolvers, all but one have been Rugers and one Smith & Wesson, all but one have been in stainless steel, .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum, I've also had several semi-autos, Shotguns, Ruger Mini-14 and so on, I love talking about them, but don't have too many folks to talk with, My Brother in law was in the U.S. Army and did two tours in Iraq, but he's not into guns as much as I am, my Sister is wanting to purchase a handgun but is not ready to choose now, she has a concealed carry permit, but does not have a gun, I know, I don't understand it either, but she wants me to help her choose what to get, instead of her husband, bc, I'm quite a bit more familiar with them than he is, so Thanks for posting, i've been a subscriber of your channel for awhile, but don't post much. Have a great evening Sir.

    Great advice!
I can relate, as I am that guy with experience and a few 😬 firearms. I have had friends ask for advice, I usually ask the same questions the ask them if they want to go and shoot some. Will usually take a good selection for them to choose from.
Most guys who love to shoot will hardly ever turn down a chance to go burn some powder, I know I won’t!🤪
Thank you for your insight and knowledge.
    Be safe out there…

Great presentation! I’ve learned to know what this purchase is for (i.e concealed carry, home defense or sporting use) , take a look at several options for that need, and not get pressured by the sales staff into making a purchase. Also doing your homework will also help with this. That’s how I’ve learned to make my purchasing decisions.

The first gun in my mind is the one that fits your hand the best. Find a range and do some rentals. Secondly what is your intended purpose? Following that logic you can usually get something that meets most of your goals.

Good video Chris. You made some very good points. When I first got my carry permit, a buddy suggested that the only round to consider was .40 SW. So, naturally I went out and bought my first handgun. A Beretta 96 in .40SW and then a Sig P226 also in .40SW. I couldn't shoot either one. The DA/SA and the snappiness of the .40SW round, my shots were all over the place at 7 yards. I took a class with an instructor who saw how bad I was and let me shoot his Glock in 9mm. I couldn't believe how much better I did with a striker fired 9mm. I sold both guns and bought a Glock 19 and never looked back. After several classes and thousands of 9mm rounds fired over the years with several Glock 19's that I carried, my shooting skills improved. Today, I am happy shooting a 1911 in .45 acp and I carry a Kimber Pro Raptor II in .45 simply because I learned the fundamentals with a 9mm round that I could shoot. Key takeaway is exactly what you suggested in the video, talk to experts, rent guns at the range to tryout. Thanks for a great video.

Best advice i can give to the first time gun buyer is to invest in Fishing Lure lights. They are about $10 for a 6 pack at Walmart and really let you inspect things like bores on muzzle loaders, cylinder timing on a revolver, and the locking mechanism of your rifle

Two things about my getting into handguns - I knew better than to try to "future-proof" my decisions, and I had a great long-time friend who had tons of military and LEO experience to start shooting with. I rented a few semi-auto pistols, but most places have tons of Glocks, S&W, and Rugers. After those I had to buy things off that grid to get my other guns. I am not worried I might sell some/all of what I have in my path to get into the sport/pastime. I bought a couple of historical guns, too, which was what lead me to get the CCW to be even able to buy a handgun. Got my FFL03 for the C&R guns. This was all within my first year of shooting, at all.

If your expert takes you into the gun store and points at the Airweight 642 and says "that's what you want!" find a new expert.

Very informative to the new gun buyer, great job. I would like to add, because I see this all the time, if CCW is a desire they need to get with gun store owners or travel around to various sporting stores and ranges, and look at holsters for their gun snd get a couple.
You go to the gun store, practice with a bunch of models, find one you like for your first gun, buy it and go home with it in the case….now what. Don’t go more then a weekend without getting a couple of holsters and a gun belt. Otherwise other things take priority and before you know it your gun is sitting in its case and never used.

Unfortunately, that's not true. I had absolutely no one to help me get in to firearms except for You Tube. That's why I ended up owning so many Glocks.🤣BUT I did find channels like yours that did end up helping me learn a lot not only about firearms and its history but also about 2A advocacy.

Pretty good boil-down on how to engage novice buyers.
But I think we still use too much jargon, with terms such as Concealed Carry, Home Defense, etc.
Someone I used to work with at a gun store had a rather simple question, “What made you decide to buy a gun today?”
And then the customer would usually say something like, “One of my friends was robbed.” Or “I saw something on TV.” Usually a follow up question or two will help nail down the intended application.
One downside to the approach is you might end up acting as someone’s therapist for a little while so make sure you collect your 5 cents beforehand.

Great video as always! One other tips.
Ask if you can test trigger pull. Especially true with revolvers. I always ask if I can dry fire or if they have caps so I can. Obviously remember to point at ground when testing!

Ammo consideration too, usually in conjunction with what purpose your firearm purchase is for. Tactitards/tactiturds mess newbies up and no one challenges them on bad advice, which they give out with the frequency of a daily dump. Experts should listen just as much or more than they talk.

I got to be the luckiest guy on the planet. At the start of the pandemic I watched a ton of TH-cam gundies, found and purchased my gun online, picked it up at the FFL. Kind of just fell into it. So “Easy” won’t be lonely I already had a hand me down 12 gauge pump and WWII collectible pistol. Of course I’d love to have more foster weapons in my “Family” but retirement budget dictates a frugal gun lifestyle.

I don't know about California, but if you do not have suicidal thoughts, it should be fine. Think hard about your desire for a firearm, if it is potentially for self harm, you should pass. In the dark times, a quick way out should not be available. Life is hard.

The most important rule is go out to a range and rent out the most common calibers and tried them out to see what kind of recoil as a shooter will feel comfortable. Afterwards head back to internet and find out the prices of ammo for each caliber to determine what can you afford to shoot with. Only then watch the above video!

All the TH-cam EXPERTS in OTHER CHANNELS who are only found in the comment selection all suggest that new people..especially the ladies should always get an revolver because revolver will never JAM, semi auto pistol jams all the time, revolvers are 100% reliable, 9mm has very very high recoil, too weak to rack the slide and magazine spring will wear out. 🤣
