I own lots os Stihl gas powered tools, they are amazing, I have had nothing but problem less running for a over decade with each, in the electric range, it has been a completely different experience, batteries, machines, and charger failures. The biggest issues is, service times for electrical tools is not on par *6months for replacement parts. The other system I run is Makita, and it has been trouble free, and service times have been less than a week.
As an home owner I prefere to go with makita, just beacuse of the batteries are the same that power mi drill, hammer drill, sander... so batteries are an investiment you spread on a lot of tool. If i was a gardner or landscaper i'd go with the system that can power the tools i need and which performs better

Personally think if people are to be encouraged to switch to a battery platform, the price needs to be more competitive. The Stihl looks the best of this bunch, but it's almost £300 more than I paid for my Husqvarna 455 Rancher, not to mention the cost of extra batteries!

I run Greenworks, I have a 40v, 60v, and an 80v, and they run great! I've been eye balling their 82v commerical 20in saw. I think it's 65-70cc equivalent?
great video and comparssion! I have the ego power 14" chainsaw and I love it, I have cut lots of oak with it and it contunies to run great after 2 years of lots use. It may be slower but I love having a battery saw to just grab and go in the winter or when the gas saws aren't running!

I'm really curious how the ego stacks up against the stihl msa 140. Those 2 saws are similar pricing. This 220 is like $1k with the saw battery and charger all being sold separately.
I got that excact same stihl...mine also has light 04 bar but not 1.1mm but 1.3mm chain. Looks like there are different versions. It cuts like mad. Also own msa 140 but the tiny chain wears quickly and can only be sharpened 3 to 4 times...after that it only produces sawdust. But..i like them both.
Am buying a saw next week. 63, on ssi and starting my own art carving business. Torn between stihl ms 171 16" or getting battery powered. I have milwaukee drill/impact set with two 5ha batteries, so looking that direction, possibly. Greenworks at tractor supply also has my interest. Just so confused and want to make right decision! Used to do tattoos and other art work, so confident i can be successful carving. Noise reduction would be a plus. Any suggestions would be great! Also need to stay under 3-4 hundred $$. I have most all other tools needed- angle grinders, die grinders, torches, wood, garage, etc.
The Stihl and Stiga are pretty good looking machines. The surprising one for me was the Karcher, it cut well and I really like the battery indicator system. Still think they need to sound like a screaming 2 stroke 😁. A good informative video, should help anyone looking for a battery saw

I may be biased to Stihl, however despite the highest price and best cutting speeds, it was the only saw that did a clean cut every time.. the rest looked like they just chewed the wood leaving scraggy ends, which would make standing the rounds on their ends for log splitting a pain .. great video thanks

I’m on the Ryobi 40v platform currently. Now that Ridgid is adding OPE to their 18v platform, I might change over if the OPE tools are up to the task!

For wood carving,the variable speed is awesomeness,and the filter on the oil reservoirs is genius.but at the end of the day,it's how long the battery last's

What's with the constant engagement of the emergency brake?
I've been running saws off and on for over 45 years; including BIG Stihls; and have never used that brake.
My criteria for selecting my 14" saw was size. The best way I can explain that is; I wanted a big 'little' saw, not a little 'big' saw. Which is why I picked the Greenworks 40v model.
Does it have the power of the ones you are testing in this video? Of course not. Does it work for what I wanted one for? Definitely.
I run the ego. Mainly bc the warranty and durability. Greenworks and Ryobi I also considered. Everything else is out my budget

How would the Makita (I already have the batteries) compare to a gas powerd saw? I see the Stihl 180 is cheaper than the Makita without batteries.
I have just purchased the Karcher CS 400 saw with 2 x 7.5Ah batteries (1 free) and charger from Mole Valley Farmers £479 delivered.
you may want to run that first test a few times and have someone else do it.. some were actual cuts some were angled partial cuts and thin as paper
Why does no one evaluate the Kobalt 80-volt brushless 18" chainsaw with a 5-ah battery? - - I have (2) Kobalt 80-volt 18" Bar Chainsaws and use (2) 5 AH Batteries. Using it on a Southeast LA farm that was devastated by a Hurricane and has been working absolutely great even cutting huge logs and trees. For oil, I like to use Ryobi Bar and chain oil. We have cut 20"+_ logs and it works like a charm. And NO more pulling and pulling to start a gas-powered chainsaw. My first 80-volt 18" Bar Chain saw with a 5-AH Battery and charger was $400 in Jul 2021

Weird how you are getting entirely different results than Project Farm. Especially on the EGO 14" and 16" that is underperforming in your tests while the 14" was performing great in Project Farm test. And they got almost the opposite for Stihl.
The Stihl in the video is the latest model so maybe why 👍🏼
Stihl is going to be the winner there. They just have so much more experience in saws with bars, chain, and internal parts, that all they're doing is making one that runs off batteries instead of fuel. Compare that to the other companies (besides Makita, who made gas saws) who are just now building saws. I'm a Husqvarna supporter, but I'll take a Stihl chain any day.

I run the Greenworks 40cm 40v chainsaw, came with charger and 1x2ah battery. Bought 2x Chinese 6ah batteries and several chains off the bay.
As a kit it works well.
You have to remember these are not petrol saws and take some getting used too. As the technology improves I'm pretty sure you won't be able to buy fuel saws. 😟😟😟😟😟🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Why not test the msa 140 instead of the 220? The price is much closer to the others, along with performance I would guess... the 220 is stihls best battery saw, no competition with these others..
Makita is just the best for overall versatility I reckon. So much to choose from
The ego at 13.5 m per sec is pretty poor at best, the Karcher was surprisingly good, like the battery time indicator, the stihl definitely stood out on performance.

The EGO is a first generation saw, in one of our next video we are testing 16” saws so that will be a different story 👍🏼
Surprised that Husqvarna is completely missing from this lineup… The 540i XP would compare well against all of these including the excellent Stihl, and for different price points, there’s Husky’s 120i, 340i and 535i XP saws…
They were invited but unfortunately did not supply us with a saw this time. I believe they are short of stock which makes perfect sense.
@@MachineryNation many thanks for clarifying the position. Certainly it’s been quite hard to find Husqvarna BLi batteries in recent months, which also suggests stock shortages.
You didn't test how long they ran before the battery gave out.
There are so many variants with time tests. Hence why we have not done one.

Just remember to keep your batteries inside overnight on the charger or they'll be useless if it's cold outside. Learned the hard way.
Great comparison, be nice if you included run time, to get some idea of how many cuts of perhaps 6" each saw could do with the standard supplied batteries :)
lol.. yeah battery saw sales wouldnt go too well if they included the run time.. they are pretty cool if you only need to trim a branch or 2 but you better bring some chargers and a few thousand dollars in batteries if you plan on actually using one to do a bit of real work
The Sthil MSA 220 C is definatley not brand new. That is over a year old. They launched their MSA 300 C last year but due to supply issues it was basically impossible to get hold of untill at the end of 2022.
This is the new MSA 220, an updated version of the original version 👍🏼
@@MachineryNation Stihl has a very confusing naming scheme and it doesn't help that different country websites are not updated with the latest info. The updated 220 model is actually 220.0 C (some shops may list it as 220.0 C-B, some might list the previous 220 C-B but show the 220.0 C picture or vice versa...)
It wasn't that long ago we were buying electric chainsaws at the Aldi's grocery stores as part of their Christmas sales. It has nothing to do with battery operated chainsaw. Just an odd thing to buy chainsaw at the grocery store

I personally don’t understand the push behind battery chainsaws. It isn’t feasible to have a stihl 462/500i level chainsaw run efficiently on batteries. People think that electric is the future of everything but really bio petrol and diesel is the way forward we just have to make it carbon neutral. These smaller saws aswell, they don’t have the power of a petrol equivalent, the torque or the durability and repairability that petrol saws have. Feel free to disagree but as it stands these are the facts.
I agree that it's going to be a good while until anything battery can match big saws but the kombi units etc are exceptional and when you don't need a big saw then battery really does make things more pleasant makes for an easy day!
@@mattdraper1388 I will agree they are much quieter so can be good for climbers when trying to communicate with ground crew, i suppose this and lower vibration are what you mean by "pleasant". Like I say, my main issue is repairability. If its made of a carburettor, piston, cylinder and crankshaft, it can be easily deconstructed and repaired. whereas battery saws are made of circuit boards that use micro soldering and are impossible to fix for Joe Bloggs off the street or even most chainsaw mechanics.
@@poggersbigman2798 yes that's exactly what I mean and as for repairability, I agree they make repairs difficult which is where they will never be financially viable for home owners because they need to be kept in warranty to avoid unnecessary and expensive repairs. Which is fine for commercial users but homeowners don't usually want to replace kit every couple of years
I own the stihl ...and perfect for smaller jobs it can log anything a petrol one can in the same size ...but you need batteries ......but i had all the batteries and charger for other tools for my work if you dont have them buying the saw and batteries just way too expensive better by a petrol one for sure
