Wow!! I just happened upon this change by searching Korean Languages. I have taken a zoom class to learn Korean and have been using flash cards. This is by far the best tutorial I have come across in explaining Hangul!! Outstanding!! To think this was 9 years ago!!!! Thank you!!!!❤😊
you're very lucky! when I was testing the waters and finding a language I wanted to learn, I found this absolute gem of a channel. I remember downloading 8 of his videos so I could watch it offline. then I lost interest in korean because I mainly consume japanese content, but now I have time and decided to come back, I dug up that stash of videos and rediscovered him. quality content that deserves more views than the clickbait you find at the top of typical search results
Your comments are really encouraging. "Compound vowels. Don't panic, it's really easy, you can handle it." How did you know I was starting to panic? xD
Thank you so much for this video! It really helps! I hope I stay motivated, because right now I have holdidays. I hope I don't get to busy when school starts again!
well... if you thought spanish or english was hard... you are wrong... but I can't give up... as much as my brain keeps saying noooo... my heart keeps saying... gooooo...!
I started watching this on a whim. It had always bothered me that I couldn't read Korean, but I hesitated to learn, because I thought I was setting myself up for another set of kanji, like Japanese. I was quite delighted to discover that it was all phonetics, and being already familiar with kanji, the writing blocks were easy to understand. The vowels are a little tricky, since there doesn't seem to be a straightforward English equivalent, but I think I got it straight now. In my mind, ㅓsounds like "oh" and ㅗ is more like "o". ㅜ is more like "oo" and ㅡ is more like "ew". I don't listen to a whole lot of K-Pop, I have no intention of going to Korea anytime soon, and I don't personally know any Koreans, but for some reason, this is still fascinating. Thank you for making these videos!
This is the best instruction for understanding the sounds and concept of Hangul. This guy is funny too. I have been trying off and on for over a year and this instruction feels like a winner for me. Thanks!!
I have been wanting to learn Korean for the longest time but I was always scared to do so because of my learning disability but I had the biggest urge to learn it anyway. I watched so many videos but yours has helped me a lot. I tried going to a library to look for a Hangeul book for beginners but I couldn’t find anything. My neighborhood is full of Jews, Chinese and Hispanics so there is not much here. There are no tutors who know Korean here either, even if there are some, I don’t have the money to get one plus I can’t travel so I’ve been stuck. So I’ve been watching this video everyday for the past few days and it’s helping a lot. I can finally memorize the consonants and I don’t see them as English anymore. I still need help with the vowels and stuff but I’m taking it slow and even though it’s not a big thing to be proud of, I’m still kinda proud of myself for memorizing the consonants. It’s a step. So thank you for this video. 🙂💜
mssmp1 yes it did! I currently know some vocabulary words now. A bit nervous to move onto learning the sentence structure. I’ve been studying vocab everyday so far.
You have explained it in the most original way. the beauty is that you learn the pronunciation philosophy as well which makes it easier to remember and relate to the language.
Thank you very much for these videos. Although I've been studying Korean for three years I'm always looking for tips to improve my pronunciation and the biggest mistery to me and many foreigners will always be why the initials (not between vowels!) ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅈ sound clearly like K, T, P, CH to us while Koreans keep on saying they sounds like G, D, B, J to them. Seriously, I've tried hard enough to understand this and I came to the point of thinking about remodeling my pronunciation accordingly despite the weird impression it causes me. If someone has a deeper phonological explanation about it, I will be very thankful.
Yes, maybe most of the foreigners who study Korean might say the same. : )) Let us explain a little bit. It's mainly because of the position of your tongue. The shape and the position of your tongue are different when you pronounce the English alphabet 'D' and the Korean alphabet 'ㄷ'. So, they are not exactly the same sound. When you pronounce 'ㄷ', 0.1inch (3mm) back side of, not tip of, your tongue touches a little front side of your upper gum ridge with the strong wind, but when you pronounce the English 'D', tip of your tongue touches a little bit back side of your upper gum ridge, and amazingly when you pronounce the English alphabet 'T', your tongue makes the same shape and touches the almost same spot as you pronounce the Korean alphabet 'ㄷ'. In a nut shell, you stick out your tongue more when you pronounce 'ㄷ' than 'D'. Now you know why 'ㄷ' and 'T' sound similar and why 'ㄷ' and 'D' are not the same sound. We said 'ㄷ' sounds like 'D' because it's, anyhow, a lot closer to it than 'T'. How would you say ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅊ sound like then in English? Hope you've got the point. Just try this, make the sound of 'D' with the tongue position of 'T'. That's 'ㄷ'. Have a good one.
Thank you so much. I will study this a lot. It is hard for a black person from Detroit, Michigan to learn this language because there aren't many Korean classes around that I know of. Rosetta Stone was not effective enough. I was lost and about to give up. This has reassured me. Thanks again for making your videos.
This is seriously the best video I have found that teaches Hangeul! Even doe this video is like 30 minutes long, you had a lot of facts. and if I compare your videos to those videos that is just 3 minutes long you have made me understand more about the language and I got a lot of facts. I really enjoy your video. And your video is really easy to understand.
Yeah I agree. I want to learn Korean to understand k-dramas and k-pop music without subtitles. Thank you so much. But, I'm having trouble saying the 'o' consonant, the one with 'no sound'
You mean 'O' consonant as an initial or final? 'O' consonant has no sound as you said and it sounds like '-ng' of 'king', 'ring' and 'wing' as a final.
This video is the best way to jump start Korean language I have seen so far. After about 25% through this video, I was able to read Korean words (it looks like all of them)! It really makes you understand the language which in turn makes it easier to learn. Thank you!
The korean pronunciation is really easy for hindi speakers! romanized pronunciations are not exact but we have got exactly equivalent sounding letters in hindi as in hangeul..we can perfectly distinguish 'e' and 'ae'....^o^
Thank you for this video. I just started learning Korean out of interest by watching k-shows. I'm glad I came across these videos. it is very helpful for beginners. I'm able to read Korean words from the 1st video itself.
Wow, the philosophical and historical explanation really helped. Thank you for taking the time to include that foundational aspect. The way you explained it really clarified my understanding and enhanced my passion to learn. I did not find it confusing at all it was really helpful! Also I love your sense of humor and fun, def giggled a lot and smiled thru the lesson. :)
Hi, hyungseok song , you are wonderful teacher and the best Teacher so far that I learned from all youtube channel that I learn Korean , i hope we can chat
I think this is the best video I've found on TH-cam for learning Hangeul. I've watched a lot of other videos too, but it was really difficult, at least for me, to understand what they said or meant. I think that you really did great explaining this, because I understood everything you said and didn't have problems with understanding what you were trying to say. Thank you so much for your time & effort you put in your videos. You are an amazing teacher. Lots of love from Belgium! :)
I enjoyed this. I followed along by asking ChatGPT how i should position my speech organs to articulate each sound, and with plenty of pauses, attention and enjoyment really, I've completed the video. Your asides were great!
(sorry no offense to seemile fans) you are a good teacher than seemile! thank you for making this simple! bless you🙏 and I'm learning korean cause i will want to live life in korea☺
Thank you so much. If you have any question about the content of the learning materials, please visit our website and send us a message via the 'Contact us' page. We always appreciate all the people who try to learn Korean language.
17:50 this section is actually blowing my mind because it makes so much more sense to use this duality to show how you should pronounce each vowel and why they used those particular characters to represent those sounds like they really put a lot of thought into the construction of hangul
Thank you so so much! This is the best Korean lesson so far I found on the internet! I love the way you explained how it was invented. It makes it really easy to remember. :) Have a happy day!
I’ve watched so many Korean alphabet videos and this is by far the best one. I’ve been trying to get this for months and all I had to do was watch this tysm xx
Thankyou so much, i watched so many videos but i never understand them i really want to speak and understand the korean lauguage and i think that will work because of these videos! Iam now busy to read and write after i know that i can read and write 100%. I want to work on talking and understand what they are saying.
We are so glad that you like our humble video. : )) Frankly Korean is not an easy language to learn, but, at least, Korean alphabet is quite easy. If you can read and write, it will definitely help you learn Korean a lot faster and easier. But, please try not to jump into the conversational way to speak Korean. You would superficially taste the sweetness, and then be tired before you go to the next level. : ))
Thank you soooo much for these beautiful lessons! I've been studying Korean on-and-off for a couple of years, and always found myself frustrated and discouraged. I love the format of the lessons and the PDFs on LearnFlyLove. I feel encouraged now, and will download more lessons when I finish Lesson 1. Thanks again!
I kid you not when I tell you that this made my learning experience so much possible and easier. I’m South African and the Sesotho and Afrikaans language almost sounds similar to Korean, Chinese and Japanese. So this is a bit easy.
I literally choked laughing when you 'Congrats you have become a Korean, but a 5 year old' haha, I like your humour. Again, thanks for your hardwork 😊👏
Same as Gustavo, I've searched many many videos, and I'm sticking with these! I love that you explain the origin and philosophy the scholars had in mind when creating the language. It helps a lot. Also, I love that you go into detail about where your tongue, lips and throat should be to pronounce it correctly, because that is really important to me! Thank you for making these, I'm really excited to learn Korean!
So happy to hear that you like it. : )) It is very important to have strong fundamentals and understand the very basics when you learn Korean as it is when you want to do something right. Our Lesson 2 also features the most unique and effective way to understand Korean writing blocks and the sound of the consonant as a final in the block. Hope you keep studying with us. : )
You posted this video on 2014 and so many people like it to this day. 5 minutes in and I love how you explain everything so precisely. Consider me subscribed!!! :)
Although I already knew the Korean script, the one thing you can never fully learn from reading is pronunciation, especially if you are learning as an english speaker because what one person says sounds like a letter, might sound different in your accent. So this was super helpful to be able to actually hear the sounds. Also just now figuring out that the name of the letter actually shows you how it's supposed to sound at the beginning and end of a syllable so very helpful stuff here, thanks!
RetailGamers Thank you for your comment. Like you said, everybody has their own accents from their own languages. So, you don't have to be perfect at pronunciation in my opinion. We are planning to make a new video for pronunciation though. It will be great. : )
I love this!!!! I have a two year old and shes learning with me!!!! Its so much better than the 3 other videos I tried to watch!!! I finally know the sounds!!! Absolutely love it!!!!
I would like to thank you for good work and explanation.. Being Arab this is the third language I'm trying to learn ..you' re helping a lot may Allah guide you and reward you for all these efforts.. Thanks :)
We have a speech said ( the one who doesn't thank others for their efforts he actually never thank his God as well) and I'm so happy to see your smile when you read my comment
Really like your video, I already subscribed, this by far is the best explanation to pronunciation for hanguel. I thank you by telling to listen to 눈,코,입 by 태양. Really good song :)
yeolinahyun49 i im loyal to astro. As you can see my profile name and pic. I really hope they win the best rookie award. And i know them from the immigration video.
I know this Alphabet already but for the sake of understanding all these lessons you have esp the next lessons, I'll go back from the Lesson 1. Good lesson, teacher!!!!
That's like the 5th channel I watch looking for introduction into Hangul and it's the best by far. Having some logic behind how letters are written and pronounced helps a lot. It's easier to memorize and provides some useful hints as to how they should sound (learning that ㅓ is 'ah' going backwards was an eye-opener for me). Thanks a lot! (BTW iotized means having shortened i-sound going in front of a vowel, like in German 'Ja', Russian 'Я', or Korean 'ㅑ'. Comes from the name of the Greek letter [iota] from which Latin letters i/j derived.)
+bloom4mee Would the question be 'do you speak Korean' or 'what language do you speak'? The answer can be vary depends on a person. But, I think we normally answer 'I am Korean' to the questions like 'do you speak Korean' or 'I can speak Korean' to the questions like 'what language do you speak'. Sorry if I misunderstood the point of the question.
+bloom4mee 'Korean' as in the language, would be 'Hangoogeo' (sorry for the poor Romanization), or 한국어, in Hangul. I think another way of saying it is Hangoogmal (again, sorry for the poor Romanization), or 한국말.
But in USA the area that I'm living in and ppl i know doesn't speak Korean but how am I suppose to practice if I can't talk to anybody in Hangul? That's the problem, but I really like this video!!
: ))) haha Yes, in Korean age by the way : )))))) In Korea, newborns start at one year old, and at the beginning of a new year, one year is added to the person's age. In other words, the first year of life is counted as one instead of zero. I know. don't get me started on this.
wooooow that's really great ... it was my first time to know how to speak korean . I've tested myself to read a korean song and I really do it .. I 've felt so great thanks alot really really thanks 😊😀☺☺

I'm like '5 years old...' excuse me?!? Well, at least I'm better than a two year old. YAAAS
Paton me too
Yay I’m 5, better then nothing lol.
At least we didn't have to learn it for 5 years to get to a 5 year old speaking age
31:45 Monotone voice: "We are almost done. You are almost Korean now"
I burst out laughing.

You have explained it in the most original way. the beauty is that you learn the pronunciation philosophy as well which makes it easier to remember and relate to the language.
+Abhishek Kumar Thank you so much for pointing out what we've originally intended. : )))
This is the best introduction lesson in the Korean Alphabet on the web. I've went back to it a few times and it's finally sinking in.
Thank you for your comment! Hope you try other lessons too.

Honestly, You are the best teacher 👍 thank you soooooooooo much 😊
I'M COMING BAEKHYUN

Every year another must join the quest
Let's all swim to Korea
For exo
"Because Man has a thing in front" haha
i know that was so funny
Finish off quote with Hyungseok Song 2014 LOL

Why some of word are made horizontal, some are vertical why?
Explain 6 types by which words are formed..

back to start again... I forgot everything need to refresh my rusty mind haha
There you go. Now I know why it's 'I'otized. :))) Thank you sooo much for sharing your knowledge. : ) Hope you keep studying with us!
You are so cute saying that "we're done. you're almost Korean now, like 5-years-old. "
: )) Thanks a lot!!
mouth shapes for consonants and backwards and forwards, up and down, horizontal and vertical for vowels really helped
Well you sir, just earned a new subscriber! :D
+Di Ci Thanks a lot. Thumbs up!
There might be more ways of saying/writing it as well but I'm still just a beginning learner myself so I'm definitely not an expert in the language.
best hangeul video I've found! This is so much better to memorize! Thanks!
+Celestite Thank you for your comment! : D Try other videos too.
I feel Korean after watching and pronouncing Hangul. :D lol nice video!
come to Korea and feel Korea even more and have some fun! : ))
YEs!
You are the best teacher so far I have found. I watched others and yours explained the best! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for your compliment! : ))
But in USA the area that I'm living in and ppl i know doesn't speak Korean but how am I suppose to practice if I can't talk to anybody in Hangul? That's the problem, but I really like this video!!
Thank you for this. I have been studying for a few months and it’s thanks to you mostly.
"We are almost done. You are almost Korean now. About 5 years old" ^_^ yay! haha
: ))) haha Yes, in Korean age by the way : )))))) In Korea, newborns start at one year old, and at the beginning of a new year, one year is added to the person's age. In other words, the first year of life is counted as one instead of zero. I know. don't get me started on this.
Hyungseok Song Haha so if you come to USA, you'll be 1-2 years younger! (I assume you live in Korea now). It's almost like traveling back in time! ;)
Hyungseok Song They count it from when the sperm hit the egg as far as I know. This is what my Chinese friend told me :)
wooooow that's really great ... it was my first time to know how to speak korean . I've tested myself to read a korean song and I really do it .. I 've felt so great
