- Toni Collette almost turned down her role in 'Hereditary' because it was too terrifying.

“Hereditary”, starring Toni Collette is unlike any horror film you have ever seen. The actress didn’t even initially want to take the role of Annie, a grieving mother battling serious demons, because the material was so intense.
“I had said to my agents, I don’t want to do anything heavy,” she explained. “I felt like I was kind of accumulating a bit of emotional gunk, and I just wanted to do some comedies and some lighter work for a while. And then they sent me ‘Hereditary.’”
Collette learned valuable lessons about self-care while dealing with the film’s heavy themes. She also wants audiences to watch the film with an open mind and understand that it’s really about family and the terrifying process of grief.
“I think it’s almost a relief and a release for people to see grieving in such an open, honest, vivid way,” she stated. “But also, it’s exciting to watch something so original. Really, if you know to expect the unexpected, you will have the time of your life because, even if you think you know [where] it’s going, it’s going to surprise you. And it’s so rare that that happens, even for people who love horror films."

This lady deserves all the awards for this movie
She deserved an oscar for the role, plain and simple. The academy hates genre films and thinks they can't be art though, but that's literally all she did wrong. She saw the value in a genre film. The performance is mindblowing and sadly everyone but the academy could see that.
I am still angry at The Academy for not nominating her. She is an astounding actress that should have five Oscars instead of zero.
no award shows of any kind take horror seriously because all most people think when they think “horror” is cheesy, 90s horror flicks with bad acting and nude death scenes, nothing wrong with those movies, i infact love them, they’re just not award worthy
@@Abby-qt4uh but Hereditary is anything but a cheesy 90s horror movie. 😂
Agree
She’s SO good ❤
Mind Blown on her accent.
ME TOO WTF i never knew she was australian
you should definitely watch Muriel's Wedding ASAP
@@johanvajse8410 That was the first movie I saw her in, many years ago. I've watched her ever since. In this movie I actually said, wow she's lost her accent. Glad to see she hasn't.
Dude same here and honestly much more respect. She not only DESTROYS her role in many of her works but with an accent thats not originally hers?? Extremely impressive!
SAMEEEE I WAS LIKE “SHE’S AN AUSSIE?!?!?”
The dinner scene alone still haunts me and that wasn’t even one of the “scary parts”
Yesyesyes it tears me at my core
i know right it can stand alone as a traumatic family drama
For me it was Annie banging her head on The ceiling
2 years later and I still haven’t had another horror movie hit me as hard as this one
The only recent movie I have seen who is, for me, as horrifying than him is Martyrs 2008, but Heredity is an absolute masterpiece
I went into the theater expecting this movie to be another generic garbage horror film. Boy was i in for a ride
This movie was one of a kind...
midsommar?
@@tsugo9273 for me, that hit in more of a gore and hopeless aspect, but other than that not nearlyy as deep as this movie.
She was amazing in this. It had to have been exhausting to film those scenes.
Wendy W. Starr I’m pretty sure it was but that hard work definitely payed off for her.
Toni Collette was absolutely outstanding in this movie, she had one of the most fantastic roles I’ve seen in horror films. 100% performance to you Toni Collette, I will beg my dad to watch Hereditary again because it’s so good!
I pray she gets nominated for an Oscar
:(
She Didn't, 😞
She already got nominated. But it's a very long time ago.
How she didn't is beyond me
hamzah , she doesn't sleep on the casting couch.Hollywood is a terrible place. Toni Collett is in a league of her own. I can't wait to see this Movie.I want to rent it tomorrow.
Why didn't I know she's Australian?!?! Little Miss Sunshine, Knives Out, Hereditary - she's had me fooled this entire time.
watch her movie, Muriel's Wedding
You need to watch the film that made her famous, Muriel's Wedding, it's one of the best films of the 90s.
Don’t forget she’s the mom on the sixth sense
Her accent! My entire life I’ve watched this woman so often that she literally feels like a family member and I am just blown away at finding out she has an accent that differs from every role I’ve ever seen her play. God I love this woman even more so than I did before!
Check out "Muriel's Wedding" for her very first Australian role
Yes, she’s an Aussie!! Hailing from Blacktown in Sydney’s Western Suburbs (I had a manager that grew up in those parts as well)!!
Same ! I feel like she's always been around. Currently watching " Pieces of Her ".
Hereditary was the first movie I saw her in and I just wanted to hug her ;-; (well until she went crazy near the end). It feels good to see her talk as herself and not her character :D
You've never seen The Sixth Sense?
Her performance in this film has stuck with me way more than most Oscar winning performances.
She was fantastic in this film.
Oscar robbed
The fact that she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar is absolutely criminal. That scene with her at the dinner table is an absolute masterpiece of acting. What a performance.
Im glad she took the part. Can't imagine any Hollywood actress in the same level for horror. She did a great supporting role on the Sixth Sense 20 years ago and Anne Graham is a nothing but the natural evolution of that character. Toni, you are great in Horror, keep doing it, we love u
Her faces in this movie are the arquetype of pure horror.
Just finished the film... Toni was... my god... incredible!
I've known her since Muriel's Wedding. When i was a kid, i thought wow she's pretty expressive with her face and really good actor. And it's amazing she has done a lot of great movies since then. One day she will be nominated for something great!
How did I never know she didn’t have an American accent?? What???? She’s an insane actress wow.
She reminds me a lot of Shelly Duvall
I don't know how she wasn't even nominated for her performance. It was literally one of the most intense performances I have ever seen.
The reaction to Charlie's death was the most real, intense and raw emotional reaction to a character's death I've seen in film. Cinema needs more examples of that because she literally sounds like she wanted to die upon discovery of Charlie's decapitated body.
Toni Collette: " I don't wanna do anything heavy "
Also Toni Collette: * scream her heart out, cries constantly, loses her breaking point, gets terrifying nightmare, being unsettling throughout the film, gets possessed, decapitate herself *
I didn’t know she was Australian.. she does a great American accent. Phenomenal actress overall.
I may be a heratic after this comment but i think she probably topped the person who played the mother in "the shining" this movie hit me like a bus 🚌
Anyone could top Shelley to be honest. She top any Oscar nominees this year. Its a shame she is not nominated. So unfair.
MrEmmanuel303 well it can be pretty hard to top Shelley's performance because she had to do one of the famous scenes so many times to the point where she was realistically horrified and tired and wasnt even acting anymore. but toni collette did an AMAZING job and i think she did better than Shelley.
She always seems like the classiest woman in all of the interviews I’ve seen her in. A certain charm and elegance revolves around this woman and she is absolutely captivating as an actress. I love that about this phenomenally talented woman who has the chops to be able to play a huge range of characters with different personalities and play each role with a heartwarming depth at the same time.
The fact she didn't even get nominated for this performance completely disqualifies the Oscars for me. They clearly only nominate people who have studios who give the Academy money over actually honoring performances. She should have been, at the VERY least, nominated this film. This entire movie got snubbed. It should have been nominated for her and Alex Wolff's performance. Original screenplay. Cinematography. And direction. It got zero nominations.
"I'd told my agent I didn't want to do anything heavy" OMFG 😅
If anyone deserves an Oscar, it’s Toni Collette for this performance. It’s sad horror movies are overlooked because she was phenomenal in this movie.
Really enjoyed this movie and that totally unexpected (to me) final scene in the tree house just took it to another level. Bizarre, disturbing and freaky!!!
Coinraker most people hated the ending. I thought it was like a cherry on top of the cake!
She nailed the U.S. accent to good that I didn't know she was Australian. Even in the sixth sense she nailed it. She has to be one of my favorite female actresses.
“Battling serious demons” lol
yep, which belongs to her family in the first place..
I loved this movie, I re watch it every now and then. Her acting was phenomenal
She’s one of those very few talents who just makes you keep watching I love her
she’s an amazing actress and her acting in hereditary is one of the best I’ve seen. so real
I cried really hard during that one scene. Because I have 2 sons and imagine screaming like this if somwthing happened to them. Shes amazing
This movie disturbed me to my core, so psychologically tolling. I LOVED it.
I hope every day for her to be at least nominated for an Oscar
This truly is one of the most original movies I've ever watched.
And for anyone wondering, this is MUCH more than just your typical horror movie. While in a way it definitely is a horror, it's so much more, as even Toni says in this video.
Also, her performance in this was just amazing, it was pure art. Raw emotion in every single scene she's in. This movie has so many great scenes in it, overall.
Definitely worth a watch.
That accent just threw me through a loop! Whaaaaaat?! She’s an amazingly talented actress and a gem! We must protect this woman at all costs
She made an incredible work!
the acting, the storyline, the talent- still my most favorite horror film
One of the finest actors of our age. She is seriously underrated.
Seriously one of the most underrated actresses EVER
She is such an INCREDIBLE actor!!!!
One of the best performances I’ve ever seen, in any genre
She is an incredible actress. I can’t believe she hasn’t won an Oscar yet. Better than merryl in my view.
Amazing movie! Amazing actors and an amazing director!!!
Actually every cast member gave it their all. I LOVED the father.
One of the most chilling performances in the history of horror cinema. This is one of those films that will never ever get the accolades it deserves because it was so out of left field.
She is criminally underrated.
One of the best actresses today. Her performance in this was so strong that it's easy to forget you're watching a movie. She was terrifying, heartbreaking, all of it. I still can't believe she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. Such a travesty.
She deserved that Oscar 💔
One of the best actresses out there. Bravo Madame! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Total crime she didn't win the Oscar for this role. Superb actress!
She didn't get a Best Actress nomination. What is going on with the Academy.
Maybe they're racist
I mean she really made this movie incredible. Her acting is out of this world.
Hereditary is the most horrifying movie i have ever watched
Can't believe she didn't get an Oscar for her role
This movie will stick with me forever
the fact that she wanted something light and comedic and they sent her hereditary ... oml hahahaha
She is so sweet and so much prettier than when she was younger
Like Julia Louis-Dreyfus, better looking with age.
She deserves to be paid over 5 mil for her acting in this movie
I watched this movie knowing nothing about it - didn't even saw the trailer - and it was a trip like no other...
We appreciate you Toni. And you are larger than oscar.
Wait SHE HAS AN ACCENT???????????????? I’m convinced everythings a lie 😂😂😂😂
Her acting in this movie should've won her an Oscar.
It is wild how angelic she is, versus how TERRIFYING that movie was. Bravo...
The awards season robbed this woman horribly, she should have won all the awards for this performance especially an Oscar.
Collette will go down in the history books with all the names the academy inexplicably shrugged.
She’s so amazing and talented!!!
This woman is one of the best actresses out there. The way she cries... ........ good lord. She sold it. All the way
Truly wild that she wasn't even nominated. But hey, everyone who watched knows what Toni did.
nobody could’ve played this character better.
This was a trully Oscar Winning Performance 🤌🏻
I don't understand why this woman is not as decorated as Cate Blanchett. She's on par with her if not slightly more versatile.
Agreed
Toni is a wonderful actress
I always enjoy watching her in the screen
You were robbed of your Oscar Nom. That dinner scene, my God! Iconic!
This will always be one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen. Her performance will always be one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for this! and then some
Collette has done such a great job.
I had no idea she was Australian
good horrors are scary ..great ones like this make you on an emotional journey this did
This and The Shining are probably the two best horror films made
Truly one of the best films to come out in a long time and she is always a top-notch actress She deserved an Oscar nomination. Hereditary is perfect. but I could not stand midsommar.
The way the girl dies in the movie is based on a death that happened in exactly the same way.
Before I clicked I thought "I bet she has an accent" for some reason.
I had NO IDEA she was Australian…WOW.
I didn't know she is australian.
Tony Collete actuation Velvet Buzsaw the best :)))))
“I didn’t want to do anything heavy”
Me: *ooof*
She deserves an Oscar
Her acting was absolutely phenomenal in this film, her acting felt so genuine and real. amazing horror movie.
You are the best actress ever for your role in Hereditary. Please please do more with A24.
that’s crazy to me, she’s brilliantly talented. just finished U of Tara
I’d not have made it out of this movie okay had I been in her shoes.. being an empath as well, the portrayal was raw and real.
I Hope she will geht her oscar soon
She is a genius, up there with Streep, Daniel Day Lewis, Brando, Dinero, etc
Really solid actress. Great diversity!
