I thought the way the cartoon showed that the Ghostbuster's movie was actually based on the lives of the cartoon ghostbusters was such a cool idea. It was the only time I can remember that an animated show based on a movie not only acknowledged the existence of the movie they were based, but the story line was written that the movie was only based on the shows characters, making them the REAL ghostbusters...
I remember which episode you mean. The reporter was looking to interview the important ghost buster and the guys recalled their encounter with gozer and how the ectoplasm animated their uniforms and that slimer was the hero who saved the team.
I love how that episode also addressed why the cartoon characters look so different from the movie characters - they were played by actors the cartoon character never heard of. But something I've been wondering since rewatching that episode as an adult - in our world, the movie was a runaway success, which is why the cartoon series was made. In the cartoon world, the movie is based on actual events in their lives, but what if that movie proves to be as successful and spawns its own cartoon spinoff? Would that cartoon also have an episode where a movie is made? Does that movie in a cartoon in a cartoon also get a cartoon spinoff? How many layers deep would that go?
Well that's just a rumor. It's been said that what actually happened is that Murray came to the studio where the show was made and while he was checking the show out he asked them why did his character sound like Garfield. They told him that it was the same voice actor for Garfield and then he just kind of nodded his head about it. The producers got nervous and decided to change the actor out with someone else for fear of Bill making a fuss about it later on. So basically no one is really sure why they changed Venkman's voice but it all sounds like an overreaction to Bill asking a question.
@@tdtellem It's like the studio started the cartoon with "don't you DARE try to imitate the movie actors because they'll want money or something" but went on to "yeah, let's selectively have you imitate the actors." That said, I don't think Dave was that bad, mind you, he wasn't given anything GOOD to work with. He's actually pretty good in The Halloween Door when they got one of the original writers to give him witty dialogue and not making him the idiot of the group.

@@tdtellem Yeah. Venkman is completely above it all, he does have a sense of duty, even though it may not be as strong as the others, but for the most part he treats everything like a big joke. And they kept that personality to heart in the GOOD portion of the TV show. Lorenzo may not sound exactly like Murray, but the casting is very much in the spirit of the movie character. Garfield's pretty much a character that's above it all and sarcastic, especially in the cartoon series where Lorenzo does his voice. But somehow in the later episodes of RGB, they wrote him as a moron that can't take things seriously, not as a cleverly sarcastic type that deep down thinks he's too good for his job, but as a dumb goofball. Which is a shame. Halloween Door is probably one of the last well written episodes, and Dave really gets to play the good version of Peter. That scene where he's clowning Slimer, only for the spud to ruin his date, turning it around on him is one of my favorites of the series.
I love the cyclical nature of things. Like how Bill Murray played Venkman, and Lorenzo Music voiced Venkman in the animated series. While Lorenzo Music was the voice for Garfield in Garfield and Friends, while Bill Murray much later did the voice in the Garfield Movies.
The episode with the Boogeyman and showing Egon with real emotions, was outstanding. That and the night game where the guys played baseball with ghosts to save Winston. The twist at the end left me laughing even many years later.
The first 2 seasons (the Lorenzo Music Peter Venkman era) of _The Real Ghostbusters_ was and is, *bar none* the best cartoon-based-on-a-major-motion-picture _to date_ that has been made. It was spooky, smart, and had a LOT of depth and heart. _Biggest_ threats were Ragnarock n Roll, Sam Haine, and the Boogie Man. *STILL LOVE IT!*
I remember my Gran getting me a ''Ghostbusters'' VHS to add to my collection... to say I was confused when I saw the gorilla on the cover is an understatement !! I had never heard of that other version!! (UK)
Охотники за привидениями, as it was called in Soviet Russia of the late 1980s. Boy, this show rocked sooo much back on those illegal VHS cassettes (as no VHS system could be purchased legally in the UdSSR). Later, when we moved to Germany in 1991, I rediscovered the show and its awesome dubbing/voice actors. Great memories.
This is one of the best cartoons of that era. It actually had some mature themes for a cartoon. The episodes would always keep you glued to the screen. I love the amount of research you guys put into each subject, and the amount of work it takes to make these videos. It isn't easy, so thanks.
A lot of cartoons in the 80’s and early 90’s were mature. Remember the Sorceress has a daughter who was raised by her secret lover in HeMan, and Jericca Benton was raising abused foster children while dealing with abuse herself in Jem.
ill stand by this statement 1000% Rewatching it as an adult its no different than watching a Soap Opera. Except it's in cartoon form. Very mature for it's ideal audience at the time.
@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria In point of fact, the Sorceress' biological daughter, Teela was adopted by Man at Arms at the request of Zoar herself - you never knew who the father was, nor was Man At Arms her secret lover. The episodes of the original series made those points clear. The most you find out are references to him being "one of Eternia's greatest men" and that it is most likely he died in battle.
Toy Galaxy always gives such a concise fun breakdown of so much nostaligia, such a great channel. And damn if I wasn't excited as hell when I saw the Ghostbusters on the thumbnail. Great episode.
When I was a little boy in 1989-1999…I had a Glow in the Dark Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man doll…that routinely escaped, was recaptured, and placed back into my homemade Ecto Containment Unit, a.k.a. toy box.

@@RetroRulzMyTown Actually The Real Ghostbusters Halloween Special which originally aired in primetime in 1989 was one of the best animated episodes ever produced for the series and it shows! 👻🚫🎃📺
Looking forward to that Extreme Ghostbusters video. Despite the 90s title and what people will tell you, it was fantastic and really flew under the radar.
Except for the fact that Ernie Hudson wanted to reprise his role as Winston and not only did they force him to audition they passed on him for Arsenio.....On top of that it was only good for 2-3 seasons before they got Coulier changed to Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters it was garbage....Q5 ruined the show.
@@lutherheggs451 Hilariously, Ernie Hudson was an established voice actor around that time. He was Cyborg on the final season of Super Friends. He would later go on to voicing a main human character on Transformers Prime.
I always thought it was 'interesting' that Venkman was the same voice as Garfield (not just same actor... same voice) and then later Bill Murray did a Garfield movie.
@@johncross1341 The thing I find fascinating is that when auditioning for the series, Maurice LaMarche was told not to do a Harold Ramis impersonation, only for him to basically do exactly that for the series proper. He was the one guy who managed to sneak around Columbia/DIC's attempt to not make the characters resemble the movie actors.
When I was living in California, The Real Ghostbusters came on before I went to school in the morning, Thank you once again Dan Larson I appreciate this.
Yes, The Real Ghostbusters was really awesome, and I would even say they had better plots that the two movies. It's great that now that we are "adults" we are finally getting a third movie, although the PC videogame also did a good job as a sequel, including the original actors voices.
Great point about the video game. I think it flew under everyone's radar, but it has the original cast doing the voices and the production values were through the roof. I like just sitting on the main menu sometimes and watching the cars drive past the fire hall while Elmer Bernstein's theme plays. It's PERFECT.
To this day I can’t get the song Boogieman from the Doomsday episode out of my head. This show was my jam in the 80s, a proper rush home from school and sit as close to the tv as I could possibly get away with.
Oh ya, for those that are interested the Ghostbusters TH-cam channel is posting The Real Ghostbusters episodes every Saturday morning and Extreme Ghostbusters on Tuesdays Enjoy👍👻
I had some of the toys when I was a kid. They were really awesome. The only one I have now though is the toilet bowl ghost. I also used to love drinking Ecto Cooler that came out of the Hi-C can. Good stuff.
I may still have the toilet ghost too, my parents are just short of being hoarders so it has to be somewhere in their house. Not Ecto-1 though, I don’t know what happened to it but I wish I still had it.
The worst thing about Toys R Us is it died well before anyone noticed. I was working for them when the company was bought out and everything changed. As one of my co-workers who'd been a bike builder with them since the 1980s described it 'a rinky dink, Mickey Mouse, chicken-shit operation' after the new owners got in there, penny-pinchers who had no idea how to run a company - which is obvious since they set the ground work for Bain to sink their claws into it (fortunately I was long gone before Bain got their claws in there).
You had me at "if you have a problem". I felt the Vanilla Ice Portal open at the back of my mind. A moment later it was confirmed for me that something had come through.
That explains why in Ghostbusters 2, when they were performing at a birthday party and they start singing their song and at the part where they say "Who you going to call?" the kids start chanting He-Man. I remember that hit me is odd because He-Man had ended a couple of years before that movie came out. And hadn't been around for a while. Also, I remember that same year a lot of good movies came out. Ghostbusters 2 didn't stand a chance. There was Tim Burton's Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Dick Tracy, and then there was Ghostbusters 2 after you've seen the first three movies multiple times.
As one of the few people who liked both Filmation's Ghost Busters & The Real Ghostbusters, thank you for not dismissing the former outright. It's not a bad show, and I'd say it's one of the better made Filmation shows. Still waiting patiently for my crossover that will probably never happen.
I had the game too, but for Atari. It was such a fun game. Started off with a VW Beetle and as you earned more money you could buy a faster car, which you needed, to get from job to job. For those of you who didn't play it you were able to save your progress and the money you earned and the car you bought was saved until next time.
Another great episode! The production values and animation for The Real Ghostbusters was great. Also, 6:32 - The Wuzzles! I really hope you do an episode about that great, but short lived series. Its weird how its kind of forgotten about, considering it's Disney.
Last time I checked Wuzzles isn't even available on Disney+. It and Adventures of the Gummi Bears launched Disney's foray into TV animation in 1985, but for some reason they debuted on the same day in the same time slot on competing networks. The animation for both series was outsourced to the Japanese studio TMS, which also worked on Akira, Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, Bionic Six, Visionaries, and the first season of DuckTales. Wuzzles lasted one season on CBS before it was cancelled. Then it was broadcast in re-runs on ABC during the fall of 1986 and spring of 1987.
@@KasumiKenshirou I remember Fluppy Dogs merchandise. The cartoon was an hour-long special that debuted on American Thanksgiving in 1986, but it did poorly in the ratings and wasn't picked up for series. It was later re-run on The Disney Sunday Movie. The animation for Fluppy Dogs was done by TMS.
I mostly remember Ecto Cooler being incomparably delicious, and the Fire House being the greatest playset since Castle Grayskull or the USS Flag. In the before times, I stumbled across an episode of the cartoon at a convention and was truly shocked how well it held up (animation, action, dubbing, etc). I've meant to re-watch it since then; this video only adds to that drive.
You forgot to mention how the official Ghostbusters TH-cam channel has been releasing authorized RGB (and Extreme Ghostbusters) episodes for streaming. Last week's episode was "Fright at the Opera" (which for a time, had my mom thinking that Valkyries were rooted in a story where they haunted the Met and battled the Ghostbusters). Through the power of VHS recording, my brother and re-watched, and re-watched, and re-watched, and re-watched ( and.....) the episode with Ray's Joke Shop, and Poultrygeist where Egon's bit by a were-chicken. As an un-dx'ed Aspie, I always related most to Egon and Ray. While I still have my straight up "Spores, molds, and fungi" moments, the more I've gotten into the esoteric and occult, the more in tune I am with Ray (and Ackroyd's specific contributions to the franchise). When I saw a Facebook meme going around asking where you were when Kennedy was shot, I was like "Metaphysically, I was... Around. Physically, ... I mean in terms of subatomic particles, I was around too. Just in a variety of different configurations."
Ya know, I never really thought of it before, but seeing a behind-the-scenes image of the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man stomping on miniature cars made me realize that he's basically a an American kaiju.
Same thing happened to me. It's funny how many decades I went without fully realizing it... and then it's just so obvious. Even more interesting, many of the same effects people used that experience to create an "American Version" of Godzilla for the "Godzilla versus Charles Barkley" television commercial, which is the closest we will ever see on film of the traditional suit technique utilized by American effects artists.
We aren't going to talk about how the cartoon, canonical, said they were the real Ghostbusters and the movie was a Hollywood adaption of them? The cartoon became the actual prequel.
This show definitely made an impact on kids. I still remembered several villains for years, and remembered entire episodes when I rewatched it on Netflix a few years ago. My son loved it too, and of coarse Netflix took it off their lineup.
I’m 40 now but til this day, for the life of me I can’t express how disappointed I was as a kid that none of the best ghosts were made action figures. I always wanted a Boogieman, Samhain, Grundel, Dr. McCatheter, Sandman and many others. 😢

I was so obsessed (still am, who am I kidding?) with the cartoon series. I'm glad Toy Galaxy made an episode dedicated to the cartoon. Thank You!
My favorite, "The Collect call of Cthulhu" Dan Aykroyd said that the cartoon was the reason the Ghost Buster sequels were able to be made because they kept people interested after the first film. The dance in the street at the end of the cartoon was in the theatrical release of the film. It's really a had to be there situation because you will not see it on DVD or VHS
Loved the show as a kid in the 80's. Rewatched as an adult a few years ago and it held up very well. Still get it right in the feels when I think about Drool sacrificing himself or the episode where the circus animals died in a fire.
That Cthulhu episode man... I can remember deails about it to this day! They specifically mention in the episode that it take about 60 years for the stars to align again in a way that Cthulhu can have an opportunity to access our world. That shouldn't be too far from now!
The Filmation cartoon wasn't broadcast when I was growing up in the UK. However, we DID have the books oddly enough! I bought my first one on a camping holiday one summer. I always imagined those Ghostbusters AND the *Real* Ghostbusters would work together on cases. I now have all the 1970s & '80s Filmation episodes on disc from the States. I noticed that Filmation eventually renamed their show "The *Original* Ghostbusters" which I guess is fair enough!
UK based also, and I vaguely remember as a kid in the 80's that the Filmation cartoon was broadcast on one of the fledging satellite channels when they were taking off here. It might have even been Sky One in an early morning weekend cartoon block. They had a clutch of shows like the animated Robocop, Teen Wolf and Police Academy. Straining my memory, but the block itself might have been presented by a puppet alley cat between each featured cartoon.
@@ScottSmallman yes, they were definitely on. I've remembered; it was the DJ Kat show on Sky. That used to have a lot of US imported cartoons, and the Filmation Ghostbusters were on it.

I watched both Ghostbusters shows as a kid. I liked the filmation one. This was another great history lesson of pop culture. Thanks, Dan & Producer Greg. 👍
Another great Toy Galaxy! I never understood why Ghostbusters had a cartoon with a gorilla until I saw a clip from one of your past Toy Galaxy videos that explained it was a live action show in the 50s.
They didn't have to call it, "The REAL Ghostbusters" for me, because as a kid, I knew very little of the other show and thought it was a cheap knockoff, lol.
I liked both shows to be honest and didn't have a clue at the time what the deal was with Filmation's Ghostbuster's and how it was based on their old live action show.
As a kid who had never heard of the '70s Ghostbusters and who had seen the movie first, the 'Real' name set the series up as trying to be more authentic than the movie which I didn't agree with. I always felt like the series was trying to be something it wasn't as a result.
@@johncross1341 Just a fan, but as a fan I can tell you that the point was to connect the cartoon to the movie and differentiate itself from the Filmation cartoon... not to say that the movie version isn't real/good/authorized, etc. Me, I took a look at Filmation's Ghostbusters, and said "Not no, oh hell no." I'm amazed I didn't break the dial that day.
Guy should've grown a pair. Not like he owned the character, he just played him. "Whaaa, my character sounds like Garfield, I'm so offended!" Studio: No problem, we'll fire him.
I fell in love with Lorenzo Music as Peter and stopped watching the series when he stopped voicing him. The new voice actor Dave Coulier wasn't that great impo.
Same here. Coulier was a fun actor to watch on TV, but as a voice actor his Venkman voice was mehh to annoying. Lorenzo Music was THE perfect voice for the character. He also had better comedic timing for voice acting than Coulier.
I always saw Coulier as a bit of a hack who couldn't get much right. I think out of all the things I've seen him in, I liked him best in Out of Control on Nickelodeon. On Full House he was just a cheeseball, not very funny (although when he wasn't actually trying to be funny he was okay as the fun uncle). On America's Funniest People he did those stupid voices and that dumbass Jackelope thing, and (again) just wasn't very funny.
They hired the guy they thought did the best Bill Murray impression without sounding TOO MUCH like Bill Murray. For better or worse, that was Dave Coulier.
One of the interesting things about The Real Ghostbusters was, every so often you could catch an episode with _OUTSTANDING_ animation. *Just, pure eye candy.* The bulk of the series was clearly animated on the cheap and that didn’t slip by 80’s-me for a second, but they did occasionally splurge on production with a top notch Japanese animation studio.
Wonderful video, but I don't have to tell you that. Your channel is one of the most polished and popular in the genre. Keep up the great content. Love the nostalgic look at some of our childhood favorites. Just a great educational and entertaining experience.
I watched this show so much as a kid. I saw more reruns than I can count. But I'm pretty sure I still haven't seen every episode. Though, I always sat through the closing credits! Perhaps I was hypnotized by the arm movements of the Ghostbusters dancing in the parade. Great video, guys! I look forward to whenever you get around to Extreme.
I remember watching episodes of Extreme Ghostbusters back in the day, yet the only episodes I vaguely remember, are the multi-parter whose title I forget, where the Ghostbusters were replaced by someone else, only to find out the ghost they captured, kept growing in power, to become this giant black blob,....thing?
I was today years old when I found out J Michael Straczynski was writer for the series. One thing I remember liking about the show was how there were season long story arcs and references to past episodes. I loved that.
Yeah, he wrote Ragnarok and Roll, among other really great episodes. And if you know him from his B5 days, he's likely to show up here in the comments and say something about working on it if someone he knows happens to mention the video to him. Can't be sure, but I bet it'd make Dan's day if he did.
I grew up on this cartoon and it was many years before I found out there was a movie. I loved the idea of science being applied to stop the supernatural. Plus the music for the show was amazing. The music they played every time a ghost was caught would always end just as the trap snapped shut. Or this incredible emotional guitar theme they used. In the episode "Ragnaroc and Roll" when Datilio is trying to convince his friend not to end the world it played there. Or another episode was where the Ghostbusters were called by a ghost who didn't know he was dead. His niece and her husband thought they could scare him off with the white sheet routine. The Ghostbusters decided they couldn't just trap the poor guy but instead help him figure out his unfinished business to he could move on. In the end it was just that he wanted to say goodbye to his niece since she hadn't been able to get to him before he passed. You don't see writing like that anymore, at least not with any kind of real emotional gravity.
I was about to cry foul, but you at least showed the greatest tie-in product ever; Ecto Cooler. LOL. That and the unrelated Purple-saurus Rex Kool Aide were my jam back in the 80s. I hope you make a video dedicated to just the toys soon. They were pretty cool and deserve a look at in their own right

Lorenzo Music was the definitive Garfield!
🤣
Funny how fate plays out as far as Peter Vankmen & Garfield goes.
Oh man i knew couldn’t be the only person waiting for him to point that out.
And now Frank Welker who voiced Ray and Slimer in TRG voices Garfield.
The episode with the Boogeyman and showing Egon with real emotions, was outstanding. That and the night game where the guys played baseball with ghosts to save Winston. The twist at the end left me laughing even many years later.
It's still creepy watching it as an adult lol
(UK)
"If there's a steady paycheck involved, I'll believe whatever you say."
Props to anyone who heard that in either Ernie Hudson"s or Arsenio Hall's voices.
"I didn't believe in none of this stuff neither but since I joined these men I have seen shit that'll turn you white"
"Ray serves no purpose." I could see Ivan Reitman and Dan Akroyd wanting to gut punch whoever said that.
Wouldn't blame them.
J. Michael Straczynski: legend. His autobiography, especially about his evil father, is absolutely harrowing.

Looking forward to that Extreme Ghostbusters video. Despite the 90s title and what people will tell you, it was fantastic and really flew under the radar.
The voice cast was perfect. Maurice Lamar, Lorenzo Music, Frank Welker, and Arsenio Hall were great.
Music was the best. I thought he did a good Murray
Akroid and Ramis were also involved in the script and I believe even said it was based off the pre-production for the aborted 3rd movie.
The cartoon was so creative that Ghostbusters 2 was a little disappointing to me.
@@thereadherring2364 That is the story I heard as well.
I have seen both: TRGB and the lame "Ghostbusters".
I think TRGB was more for the more mature teens, the lame "Ghostbusters" more for younger teens.
@The Dead Roach Society the visuals of the subway cars, that song, the creepy voices. It’s a definite stand out episode.

“Toys R Us - you’ll never outgrow us.”
Oh, that punches me in the gut. 😔
Hit all the feels. I recently got reissues of the original TMNT and Ghostbusters action figures and it was too much.
One of the best written animated shows of the 80s. Expanded the Ghostbusters mythos excellently
Phelous did a great in-depth look at what they did to this show, so I'm mad before this video even gets rolling
“Children of the 80’s are “ADULTS” now.” Lol

ADULTS with spending power no less
I had the Egon and Ray "fright feature" figures, I completely forgot about those until you reminded me.
Nostalgia aside the animation holds up very well! These were shown in my country every Friday night, watched them all including re-runs!
Awesome video, The Real Ghostbusters was my favorite growing up. That got me into GHOSTBUSTERS
Ecto Cooler is still my favorite Hi-C flavor. That said, there was a Ghostbusters PC game back in the 80's, I played it on an IBM PC Jr.
I had the game too, but for Atari. It was such a fun game. Started off with a VW Beetle and as you earned more money you could buy a faster car, which you needed, to get from job to job. For those of you who didn't play it you were able to save your progress and the money you earned and the car you bought was saved until next time.
I watched both of these Ghostbusters shows when they came out. And yes, I was very confused why there were two completely different ghostbuster shows.
This is officially my favorite spit take compilation. I spit out my water laughing at Gene Wilder
I always thought the Real signified that they were officially working for the Spanish Crown. Learn something new every day!
Another great episode! The production values and animation for The Real Ghostbusters was great.
Also, 6:32 - The Wuzzles! I really hope you do an episode about that great, but short lived series. Its weird how its kind of forgotten about, considering it's Disney.
The Wuzzles was great. I'd like to see something about them too.
The spit take section is one of the best things you have ever done. Bravo. I truly needed that
I mostly remember Ecto Cooler being incomparably delicious, and the Fire House being the greatest playset since Castle Grayskull or the USS Flag.
I didn't know this. I was watching the ones on Crackle
"If there's a steady pay check in it, I'll believe in anything you say."

The dance in the street at the end of the cartoon was in the theatrical release of the film. It's really a had to be there situation because you will not see it on DVD or VHS
The Real Ghostbusters were my first Ghostbusters experience. Excellent video!

That Cthulhu episode man... I can remember deails about it to this day! They specifically mention in the episode that it take about 60 years for the stars to align again in a way that Cthulhu can have an opportunity to access our world. That shouldn't be too far from now!
The First 2 Seasons were the best, I always loved the faded animated style used in those seasons
Wait what? I remember watching these as a kid on CITV in 1990

One of my fave episodes was the Sandman one. Janine became a ghost buster!
Janine’s original design was definitely better IMO
While it wasn’t a great decision to slap “Slimer and” at the start of the title some of those Slimer eps were pretty fun. None of it was bad. (Coming from myself rose tinted glasses firmly on)

Another great Toy Galaxy! I never understood why Ghostbusters had a cartoon with a gorilla until I saw a clip from one of your past Toy Galaxy videos that explained it was a live action show in the 50s.
I had the entire run of NOW! comics The Real Ghostbusters. Loved that series.
The spit take montage at 11 minutes…amazing. Finishing with a Young Frankenstein clip…inspired.

Bill Murray: I'm unhappy with the voce for Venkman.

Studio: No problem, we'll fire him.
Luronzo Music the voice of Garfield, played Bill Murray in the cartoon . Years later Bill Murray plays Garfield in the movie .
I think he did so because he felt he owed Music.
9:38 As soon as you said, "If you had a problem", the tune was playing in my head. Well-played, sir!

Awesome :-) the comic adoption the last years Are Also worth the read!
Great stuff!
The arcade of Alien Storm was akin to 'The Real Ghostbusters' .(more so than the Sega Genesis etc conversions).
