Ur right the show's never been successfully duplicated or spun off. The original had sci fi elements and creative license (in making KITT's AI more human like) the later incsrnations KR 2008 especially didn't use enough creative license and the repores between the charactrrs wasn't there. Early in it's run classic KR was a little stiff. But 13 episodes in the elements started gelling and really working together. KR 2008 may have had KR's componets to a degree. But no spin off ever had it's soul

Same! KARR was my favourite part of the show, especially in KITT vs KARR when he was voiced by Pail Frees and took on a more calculating and evil personality rather than the more naive one from Trust Doesn't Rust. It's criminal that he only appeared in two episodes. When I was 5 yrs old I was a huge Knight Rider fan. That year Toys R Us opened their first store in my hometown & at the grand opening they were going to have KITT & Micheal Knight (the Hoff himself) there. My Mom said I was gonna get to go with my 2 best friends, I was super excited. Then we all got grounded for ticky tack stuff & we were not able to go anymore. I was devastated & still bear the emotional scars to this very day. Later I heard that Hasselhoff was an early investor in Toys R Us. Another Great video Dan & Greg
Great video. I just wanted to point something out. Peter Cullen does voice KARR in the season 1 episode 9 Trust Doesn't Rust. But in the season 3 episode 6 KITT VS KARR, KARR is voiced by Paul Frees. Just wanted to give him the credit he deserves as KARR as well.
First of all, you guys totally made my day with the Knightboat reference. That was awesome. I have only been to Universal Studios once, but I waited in line to have my picture taken sitting inside KITT.
Knight Rider was an awesome show when I was a kid. Cool theme music, cool agent, boss who grew to respect said agent, pretty and intelligent mechanics and an awesome car that was ahead of it’s time. I remember being stationed in Hawaii as a young sailor. There was a man who had working replicas of KITT, the Mystery Machine, the 60s tv show Batmobile, Ecto-1 and Street Hawk. KITT stole the show.
My mom found my old Kenner KITT car and Michael figure cleaning out the house clutter last year. They are currently displayed proudly on my Blu-Ray shelf.
Nice series recap, I wrote/published "The Knight Rider Companion" in 2008, a 680 page full color guide book to the original series. Glen A. Larson was a dear friend of mine. Michael's Scheffe's last name is pronounced "Sha-faye". I also assisted Diamond Select Toys with their 1/15 scale lights/sounds (I provided the sound clips for KITT) and Minimates Knight Rider toy lines. I did a two page spread of the new KITT's dash for the Knight Rider: Knight Strikes Vol 2 TBD by Lion Forge Comics. I've been keeping the spirit of Knight Rider alive since 2005 and chances are you've seen my work in some form or another, especially in google image searches. I've literally ate, slept, and breathed Knight Rider and still do today. Really love your videos! Keep up the great work!
What a lovely and fascinating post. If it’s the same publication, it appears it is about to be republished? Look forward to reading it. Being a kid in the 80s was just the best imho.
@@PrinceBarin77 - Thanks! Actually the newly released KRC "Abridged Edition" is more of a remastered version, but is called "abridged" because I had to cut some things out due to changes in licensing and publication requirements. In the early 90's I seen the KITT used in the 3rd season at a Gas station on it's way to a Car show. He let us look inside which was cool. Each car had a silver plate of Authenticity.
I am always touched by how warmly The Hoff always speaks of Edward Mulhare. David admits that Mulhate was added to give the show an air of gravitas, given Mulhare's acting c.v.
Mulhare was sort of like the Alec Guiness of TV. One thing I always liked about 80s tv was seeing all those stars from the 50s and 60s pop up. Sort of like Lifetime network today with Meg Ryan and Mira Sorvino popping up.
@@RSProduxx I'm happy with the whole 80s revival that is going on right now. There are so many different covers of the NeverEnding Story song now, mainly due to that series.
When Universal Studios had "KITT" on display for visitors to sit inside and ask questions, I remember hearing a little kid asking the car, "Are you ticklish?" Made me giggle to hear KITT trying to explain, as technically simple as possible, why cars are not sensitive to tickling.
I miss 1984. I never had the small scale car but they made a power wheels size pedal car with the kitt talk button and the front lights and sounds. That was far more fun. Now I'm gonna go back to collecting my cars
I remember Knight Rider. I was little too old for it, but my youngest brother LOVED it. Posters and all. We took him to Universal Studios to see KITT. He saw KITT and stopped in amazement he said, "Hi KITT. "
Yea. Who was that guy? You'd think he'd have turned up in some other Glen A Larson production. Maybe he was some background Colonial pilot on Battlestar Galactica.
Larry Anderson is the name of actor who played Michael Long in the pilot episode(his lines were redubbed by David Hasselhoff) prior to the surgery that changed him into Michael Knight.
The actor's name is Larry Anderson, and looking at his IMDB page, he's actually had quite a career as a character actor in Hollywood. He's also apparently a magician.
What always got me about Knight Rider is you had this dude with virtually unlimited resources and the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence at his disposal, and he used it to, like, save small traveling carnivals from corrupt sheriffs and whatnot.
yeah... but if you start to overthink and look at the Risks of a FLAG-like Organization taking on 'Bigger Problems'... not only would it inevitably lead to corruption but from a Doyle-ist perspective it would require the show to become serialized, rather than episodic where the Case is closed once the Blind Orphan Saves the Nun at the Dynamite Factory, and Michael gets his kiss from the Nun and more from the Orphan's older sister
Well,Micheal and KITT went up against global terrorists, illegal waste disposal group,Gathe Knight and Goliath(twice) and so many colorful villains who operate above the law.
No he didn't. We all wanted to forget him. Unnecessary character. I remember an episode where he simply rode into a collapsing building on a motorcycle to ostensibly "help" Michael, but Michael was already on his way out. RC3 just jumped into KITT and he and Michael exited as the building collapsed. The casualty was RC3's motorcycle. Otherwise no reason for him to even be in the scene.
@@joelellis7035 I remember Devon's reaction upon seeing the remain's of RC3's motorcycle in the Semi, "Oh! It IS it ISN'T it?" then he does a rev motion with his hands. I just about fell off the couch laughing as a kid
I know I watched Knight Rider as a kid, but the only episode I remember is when KITT was destroyed/rebuilt. KITT was scared to use something/go faster. The episode you mention in this very video.
The MAD Magazine parody of Knight Rider was priceless. Michael looks over the 200 different controls on the dashboard and says, "Boy, I sue do miss having a glove compartment!"
I just finished rewatching the complete original series on DVD. First time I had rewatched it since it first aired-and I’ve never binged anything like I binged this show. It never got boring. Plus, I saw a number of episodes I missed when it was originally on, so it was a great experience. I’m currently working my way through Team Knight Rider. Suffice to say, it’s definitely a low rent version of its predecessor, but I decided to watch anyway, out of curiosity, since I skipped it when it was originally on back in the ‘90s.
I bought the Diamond Select Knight Rider toy a few years back. It fits my GI Joes perfectly, and looks dope with Mercenary Wraith driving with his arm gun hanging out the window.
The Knight Industries transport truck could be a redeco of Optimus, Goliath a redeco of Motormaster, and they would propably use either Sideswipe or Runamuck/Runabout for KITT and KARR.
Well, now I wanna grab a modern Motor master and repaint him as Goliath, then he can take over the Stunticons. War For Cybertron G2 Sideswipe makes a decent stand-in for KITT.
@@LightGuard That could make a lot of sense. The exclusive Punch/Counterpunch that came out a couple of years ago for the Titans Return series could have made a modern day version of KITT, but I can understand WFC G2 Sideswipe being used instead. Maybe the P/CP one could be used for the crossover with the Val Kilmer reboot version?
When I was a student, we had a local hardcore band called "Evil Michael Knight" they always came on to their own version of the theme tune. Good times.
My own memory of the show, aside from being a very very young fan, was having a pedal-car KITT that had a button to make the sweep-light go back and forth on the hood and to make KITT say a few stock lines. I loved that thing far longer than I could fit into it to pedal it. I have forever been disappointed by EVERY SINGLE RIDE-IN CAR TOY that makes you "walk" it rather than having pedals.
The days of "some assembly required" meaning "parents, you're putting this thing together on Christmas Eve while the kids are asleep!" That was a hint for me that such a toy was likely a no-go.
3:01 I lived within walking distance of that intersection jump. When I found a static image of the leap with the background still recognizable at the time in 2016, I never looked at that intersection the same way ever again. Also: major props for using MST3K’s titular “McCloud!” joke. I thought he was Dale! 😜
The part where the kid was talking to his big wheel and all the kids bent over to "listen" I was like really?! really?! Imagination is great but that was a bit much.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu kids today with their thousand dollar smartphones have it too easy. They don’t know real hardships like the ones 80s kids had to endure like when mom and dad refused to buy a fortress Maximus or USS Flagg because it’s too big and too expensive, I’m still bitter about that after all these years.
Knight Rider was a must-watch in my household. We never missed an episode. I would be lying if that interest didn't carry over to the blatant homage series, "Viper", which was pretty much Knight Rider, but used to plug Mopar's supercar. It lasted four seasons; Of course, some of the concepts in that show were "borrowed" for the Knight Rider Reboot, like the ability to morph into different vehicles. While not part of the Knight Rider series, Viper could almost be considered an ad-hoc part of the franchise. Oh, and I liked Knight Rider 2010! nice one shot. I'm a bit of a gearhead, so shows and films with fast cars always appeals to me. awesome video!
@@Hyde_Hill Knight Rider is expected, Airwolf is the choice of a truly sophisticated 80's connoisseur. I appreciate when they go deep with shows like Automan.
They never seemed to get that KITT was a character and that you can’t just make him look like ANYthing. The transam was lightning in a bottle. You can’t just make KITT an F-150 and expect it to be received the same way.
If KITT made a smartass remark about feeling fat when turning into the F-150 I think it would still have been fine. Issue is they forgot KITT was actually a main character of the show and not just a mode of transportation that talked sometimes.
One thing often overlooked is the fact that Peter Cullen only voiced KARR in the Trust Doesn't Rust episode of the original series and the 2008 series.... Legendary voice actor Paul Frees voiced him for the KITT vs KARR episode
Another great review as usual! Knight Rider was a good show. Some good dramatic episodes, good music, fantastic stunts and a lot of fun. Certainly had some lackluster eps too and dumb elements but we have to remember how long ago it was. Came out at just the right time. The timeless new Trans Am practically looked like a spaceship compared to most production vehicles at the time. The 80s was a time of "high tech" and amazing car chases. Knight Rider helped forge it.
@@valjeanlee7060 Thanks for sharing. You are correct they did use a few cars that were regular Firebirds modified to look like Trans Ams in addition to the cars that were actual Trans Ams. Pontiac offered numerous model versions through the years: there was the base model Firebird, Firebird SE etc..and then the high performance Firebird versions such as Firebird Formula and Firebird Trans Am. So all Trans Ams are Firebirds but not all Firebirds are Trans Ams. Kind of like there was a base Camaro, Camaro Berlinetta, Camaro Z28, Camaro IROC-Z. Or Mustang and Mustang GT. :)
Knight Rider is and always be one of my top favorite 80's tv shows from my childhood that to this day I still watch on The Charge Channel. Kitt voiced by "Mr. Fenny" from Boy Meets World is the perfect voice ofr Kitt and when kitt becomes Super, i was on the floor in awwe. The Knight Rider Movie was filmed from my old home city of San Antonio, Texas (which i was around on one of the days they were filming a scene at the River Boat Mall) It was exciting to see Kitt the Car there with David aka Michael Knight there.
LOVE that you did a jab at Cullen's return as K.A.R.R. in the 2009 series. Taking the "roving robot" thing literally was one of the worst choices in the new series.
I grew up in Healdsburg California, where they filmed the episode "ice bandits". We got to see all of the stunt cars, and talk to the drivers. Didn't meet the Hoff, though.😒
My childhood best friend and I have a running thing, if we need each others help on something we'll call and say "KITT, I need you buddy". And then we laugh for the next 20 minutes. Haha! Thanks, Dan & Greg.
Man, the nostalgia for this show. One of my absolute obsessions as a kid. I had both the too-big-scale KITT and Michael, *and* the little hotwheels one with the launcher - in addition to having a beach-airbrushed KITT t-shirt. In the 90s, I went out a couple times with a girl who had a black 80s trans-am, and even that spoke to my nostalgia brain.
Holy crap, I thought it was just me that felt that way when I watched it as a kid! It was heartbreaking watching his “friend” essentially die....horribly!
No kidding right? For real! I'm a car guy and one of the first few time I went to a wrecking yard as a kid I had a mini-panic attack. I saw an old 80's that had caught fire and friend said "It looks like KITT from that acid episode!" . And it did, that thing burnt to the ground. So I'm kind staring at it and legit felt like I had to get away from there and not look at it too long... Yes..it was stupid lol. Amazing how that stuff seep into your brain when your young lol
I still have all my Knightrider toys . Turbo booster, the crash set with the semi. The talking kitt still works. Even the wind up Street hawk motorcycle .
I remember watching the episode of BJ and the Bear with that Police cruiser as a kid and thinking about how cool it was (for the 70's anyway). I never even thought about the connection to Knight Rider. Pretty cool historical context. Elements from two shows into Knight Rider being BJ and the Bear and Battlestar Galactica with the Cylon eye and Kitts scanner.
@@BishopTJH I prefer the voice of Paul Frees; in fact when I first heard the voice of KARR I thought it was Frees and when I saw that it was voiced by Peter Cullen I thought he had based the voice on Paul Frees' Ghost Host voice from The Haunted Mansion.

What a refreshing summary of everything relative to KNIGHT RIDER! I've been a die-hard savant of Knight Rider for as far back as I can remember. The one portion of the script in Larson's original pitch has Micheal Knight implanted with a chip that actually linked with K.I.T.T., which sealed the bond between the man and his car. KITT would communicate with Knight through this, and also sense his mortality during certain circumstances. Clearly, this defeats the purpose of actual car synth voice, and comm watch. Anyway, your background knowledge of the series is astounding. Great video!
I loved this show as a kid growing up in Zimbabwe. I remember the a Knight Rider car being shown at a shopping mall and queueing for hours to sit in it and talk to KITT. When I got in it I star struck and couldn’t think of anything to say!!! Was so gutted!! As soon as i heard about it I wanted to work with computers. Here I am 40 years later working in cloud tech in IT! My car has sat nav , I talk to Siri but still no turbo boost option! Thanks for taking the time and effort in doing such a concise and informative episode!!
The KITT with real voice and Michael Knight action figure was a holy grail there for a couple of years. I remember salivating over it in the Sears catalog or Montgomery Ward catalog or the Sears Christmas Wish Book or some such catalogs of the time.

It was like 15 or 20 tapes.

I'd love to see a mash up of Knight Rider, Airwolf, and a few of the other "supermachine" type shows all teaming up to take on some super baddies. There were some other supercar type shows, one was a show where the car could change shape. We live in an "enlightened age", so the drivers/pilots could be like the new Charlie's Angels. Pull as many of the old 1989s shows in all together.
No, if an "80s supervehicle" shared universe were to be created, leave Automan out of it. Sure all these shows had their hokey elements but Automan was hokey through-and-through. If we had to add a fourth show to the Big Three of Knight Rider, Airwolf and Street Hawk, my vote would be for A-Team, even though they didnt have a supervehicle. The van was iconic and the characters would probably fit in well in the stories of a universe with the first three

Okay.
My mom didn't like it. 8 year old me wanted to watch the show so bad but she said it was corny so we had to watch the girly mom shows.
My dad doesn't XD
In all seriousness though, you're crazy if this didn't at least bring you one smile
Or have you shed at least one tear over one of KITT's destruction scenes... Or how Michael (David) treated him at the beginning of the series XD
Or have you laughing at least once.
@@dannydaw59 girly mom show's? That's just wrong. KR corny? That's just clueless
When I was a kid, in the early 2000's, my dad would rent us some of the best 80's action shows including this, The A-team, and The Dukes of Hazard. Good times.
Your Pops was cool for doing that
Yeah your pops was cool. That’s when tv was the best
I was a Fall guy fan and Simon & Simon. But Knight Rider was in the top 3.. top 3 No.1 favorite tv, But Karr was my favorite character on the show.
did you watch 'Hardcastle and McCormick?' in the line up?
Hero characters of the 70s and 80s were always made to "Vietnam Veterans". If this came out in the 90s, Michael would have also had ninja training.
He might not be a ninja but he still can throw the gun out of your hand with his leg
They can introduce a new generation certainly... but Knight Rider has never worked without Hoff, Daniels... and the Trans Am. Needs all three!
The KARR episodes were my absolute favorites growing up. Especially when he was found alive buried in the sand.
I just got my KARR replica on the road, last sept. two years. not finished yet. but more than half done. been a FUN build. the black n silver, Paul Freese version.

Same! KARR was my favourite part of the show, especially in KITT vs KARR when he was voiced by Pail Frees and took on a more calculating and evil personality rather than the more naive one from Trust Doesn't Rust.
It's criminal that he only appeared in two episodes.
I always assumed that Garthe Knight would find his still-active CPU and rebuild him as he was the only one outside the foundation who knew how to make the molecular bonding shell material.

I’ve really enjoyed your channel over the last couple years.
Cheers to nostalgia!

The kid waiting for Kitt to talk that never comes is killing me in the commercial.
Yes, if you listen really closely, you can hear KITT say : "I hate you"
In the early 90's I seen the KITT used in the 3rd season at a Gas station on it's way to a Car show.
@@robzilla730 I was really surprised (and happy) to see Winona Ryder in Stranger Things tbh :)
@@RSProduxx I'm happy with the whole 80s revival that is going on right now. There are so many different covers of the NeverEnding Story song now, mainly due to that series.

Knight Rider, Greatest American Hero, Simon&Simon, Street Hawk, Airwolf were the shows that I was allowed to stay up to watch.
Imagine being the guy hired to be Michael Long before the surgery. Landing the lead part for all of ten minutes, lol.
Yea. Who was that guy? You'd think he'd have turned up in some other Glen A Larson production. Maybe he was some background Colonial pilot on Battlestar Galactica.
And your voice is even overdubbed :P
Larry Anderson is the name of actor who played Michael Long in the pilot episode(his lines were redubbed by David Hasselhoff) prior to the surgery that changed him into Michael Knight.
@@robzilla730 Except Battlestar Galactica was BEFORE Knight Rider (late 1970's).

"Hey, you forgot" Peter Parros. He played Michael's mechanic/sidekick RC3 during season 4.

I'm just ready for the Transformers Crossover with some cheeky connection between KARR and Optimus, and maaaybe Goliath and Motormaster.
Fingers crossed get one next year for its 40th anniversary
It wasn't a Trans-Am...it was a Firebird..

Don't forget about streethawk!

Now decades later all 4 seasons on DVD. 1/32 scale K.I.T.T and K.A.R.R on a shelf. Both versions of K.I.T.T hot wheels in their original packaging hanging up.
I love Knight Rider.
