    "It's easier for me to deal with lists and plans and data than believing in any of that woowoo stuff... of course, because I am a capricorn." 🤣
    Your deadpan humor is incredible! Thank you so much for this video. I've been struggling with the dichotomy between ✨manifesting✨ and budgeting/planning/hard work, and it's interesting to see that for you, it's kind of a "both, and" situation rather than "either, or." I hadn't considered both, and. ☺️

    It’s so nice to see someone talking about their personal experience instead of giving out advice. Advice is great, but hearing about other’s successes and failures makes it feel more real. I also adore creatives talking about their personal worlds, I find it so fun and helpful to see the different inspirations and methods different creatives use. I’d love to see more in-depth lore discussions on your world and the different peoples (fantasy races are a special interest of mine). Nothing too detailed of course, just vibes. I hope TH-cam keeps going well for you!

      I also connect a lot more with personal experiences. I prefer memoirs, as well as sociology/psychology type books, rather than self-help when I am feeling stuck or confused or sad. And certain YT channels are great for that too. Usually just hearing how other people got through things helps me a lot.
      Oh, I would definitely LOVE to do more videos about my world, it always makes my day when someone asks! I do have more planned, for sure.

    I totally agree, it's a bit of both. It's like the story about the guy drowning in a river and asking God for help. God kept sending him different forms of aid, but the guy didn't want to do his part in it and kept asking God for help again and again. Success is equal parts working hard and magical thinking to make it all feel good.

    Regarding “too many cats”… two is the absolute minimum recommended number, three is better unless one is a social outcast by a tightly bonded pair in which case a fourth cat is necessary to give the third a friend. But five is the perfect number because that’s where the balance is tipped into a seeming “infestation” which is where the real adventure resides… they have you sufficiently overpowered so you’d better stay on your best behavior and get your desktime in. No faking it because the cats are everywhere and they will know if you’re slacking off.

    Your videos got recommended to me just a couple of days ago and I can't tell you how much hearing about your struggles and successes has helped and motivated me continue with my own creative career. I have been so discouraged lately, but the way you talk about yourself makes me think we have a lot of common personality traits and it feels a little like I'm connecting to a potential future where I too managed to make things work. So thanks! I can't wait to watch more :)

    You really got me when you were like, "The world needs the modest contributions, like just being a DM for your friends... but maybe you also want to do something more grand!" And I'm like "Lydia... I straight up DO NOT know toward which I'm called."
    Money is a false god, and I'm just as phobic of cultist behavior as you are, but yes, there's also a sense in which I'm a True Believer.

  • @tizzannie

    Not sure if I believe in manifestation, but I do know that you have to put something in to get something out. Not matter how hard I hope and dream, a finished book is not going to fall into my lap if I don’t sit down and write it.
    I’ve watched a few of your videos now and as a 19 year old writer feeling very lost, it’s quite comforting to hear the real side of things. It’s nice to dream that I’ll get published and become a bestselling author but I’ve got to bring myself back to reality

    • @lidiyafoxgloveauthor
      @lidiyafoxgloveauthor  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would say, hold onto that possibility. A lot of people do become best selling authors and there is no reason it couldn't be you! Just that the work must come first, and even bestselling authors have rough patches, so it is helpful if the journey is still the primary reward.

    • @5Gburn

      You are at the prime of your life--go for it! I wish I could go back 30 years and start writing when I was your age. Sit down and write. I know the phone is distracting. Put it down and write. And write some more!--it's addicting.
      I hope you don't mind, but here are a few suggestions for other writing channels to help you build your craft:
      *Brandon Sanderson lectures. Holy cow. I've watched them through probably 6-7x, they're that good. Bonus: he's hilarious!
      *Erin Brock--she's a novel editor who presents very indepth breakdowns of story structure and various focused writing topics. If you only watch her story structure series, that'd be like a mountain of gold for you.
      *Sarra Cannon (Heart Breathings): she presents a wide range of topics such as writing a bestselling series, plotting and editing, etc.
      *Jenna Moreci. Because she's got some great tips, and she's hilarious. She does drop the F-bomb quite a bit.
      Okay that was long--don't hate me 😂 I wish you well on your journey.

    I naturally have a kind of negative mindset, and it really hurt me when I was younger. I made things way harder on myself, with this idea that I was being realistic. It took me a long time to get that in check. Being positive doesn't mean "being one of those positivity people." And manifesting doesn't mean being delusional. It just means working toward the life you want, and not constantly beating yourself up.
    Also, if you fall and break your arm, manifesting and being positive is not going to be enough. (But it could help).

    I love how your channel talks about money, it's been really inspiring to me. I never heard someone talk about the financial side of creative careers before in depth like you. It was the first thing to really make me feel like -oh I could actually get by as an author. (I've always wanted to be but it always felt so vague). This was such a pep talk that I needed this week. (I've been such a weepy mess feeling like what I want is impossible). I don't really care about my career rn but I do have have some goals that are definitely reasonable just scaring me (move back to the US (and a more expensive city then where I am rn as well😓) and be financially independent with all the health insurance issues and my family estrangement, so that I can be around my brothers (and friends) again). It is possible, I just have to do the work, you're so right. :) thank you. I'm going to keep looking for a job today and try to make some art and try to find some volunteering group to join🫡. (p.s. I'm looking forward to your next video! this channel is such a comfort to me

    I love your mindset about doing the work, and then believing that it will work out - I think there are some people who "manifest" but who don't put the work in, but to me that seems such a waste of time (not wanting to upset anyone, just my thoughts). When I started writing ten years ago, I had an idea in my head of what I wanted to make - a figure that at the time seemed so out of my realm of possibility it was laughable. And yet I made that figure, and I've made that figure every month for ten years. And like you, I have had good books, and books that I loved that didn't sell, but that overall goal of "I need this much to make this viable" has always happened, so to me, I believe that if we put the work in, (And I work damn hard seven days a week) then we can let go of the outcome, because for me, in it's own way, the Universe has always come through for me in one way or another when I've needed it most. Was it because of the work, or in spite of it? I don't know. I just know it works :) Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Love your videos :)

    • @lidiyafoxgloveauthor
      @lidiyafoxgloveauthor  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, my trajectory has been fairly similar. Of course there have been times where things don't feel like they're working out very well at all, and usually if I step back and assess it I realize something about where I'm at is not really bringing me what I need or want or feel meant to do. Once I break out of that pattern, then something good comes along.

    The thought that you are the only person who can take the steps to make your dreams come true resonates so much with me. That same concept has become a huge motivator for me personally as I entered my 30s and realized there were still so many dreams I had always wanted but hadn't taken steps to make realities. In the past year in particular I've really started just making myself actually do the work and I've already achieved several lifelong dreams in that time!

    13:07 - 13:24 really hit for me. I'm a debut (it comes out in June!) and that's how I see it, too. My mindset is "mitigate everything but luck". Do the work, put in the time, do allth e things you're "supposed" to do. If you get lucky, great, if you don't, it's completely out of your control. Despite that, I have also set mutliple year ahead financial goals with writing and will be interesting to see if those pan out.

    Someone wrote to Thomas Jefferson about the free will debate of that day. They asked him if he believed in luck. He replied that he did believe in luck, and that the harder he worked, the more luck he had. That's kind of the balanced equation you're presenting here. You can manifest your goals by working toward them over time, rather than by just wishing for a magical gift in a magical minute.

  • @amy-suewisniewski6451
    @amy-suewisniewski6451 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I think for me the difference between a toxic manifesting mindset and healthy one is if the manifesting is putting the responsibility of uncontrollable outcomes on your attitude. Like "I want to publish a book!" That's practical and possible - even if you don’t do it traditionally or make tons of money you can still achieve it. And in that case, having the right mindset to propel you forward to take thoae practical steps is super beneficial. You need to overcome self doubt and other negative thinking.
    If the manifesting though is "I'm going to make a million dollars off of this one book, and if I don't it's because I was too sad in my head" then its bad. Especially if it comes with a "how to manifest your millions of dollars" course on the side. I find this kind of manifesting also lacks practical steps related to the goal. It's usually like 90% focused on thinking and not being too negative or repeating the right mantras. Where as more healthy manifesting has a bigger emphasis on the how-to's.

    Thank you for sharing your perspective. I am an agnostic who doesn't believe in a higher power but even I have to admit that some experiences were too much of a coincidence. Maybe it was a confirmation bias, or whatnot. But throughout the life, whenever I was in the lowest of low crisis, I imagined a solution would just appear and it did. I remember when I was at uni, had no money and a large phone bill coming up before Christmas . I knew my parents couldn't help pay it, I was on my own. But there were hardly any jobs around, especially for a student. I "manifested" that someone would offer me a job, and all I wanted to earn was the amount of my phone bill. Few days later, a friend asked me to fill in for her at work, so she could prep for exams. Guess what I made? The exact amount of my phone bill, plus some change for the Christmas gifts for my family.
    I've had several other examples like this throughout my life. I have no idea how or why, but I am still grateful.

    To answer your question about the tension between the practical perspective vs manifestation, my belief is that the practical steps are the outward expression of the manifestation. Do not get the casual relationship confused; working hard does not cause the thing to happen, rather it's the opposite. The new reality you have summoned into being is the cause of your behavioral changes (such as working hard), and these behavioral changes are the spiritual expression of the energetic movement towards that thing. In other words, the outward is an expression of the inward.
    As water follows the path of least resistance. If you have chosen to bring a new reality into being the path of least resistance will bring it about, which may show up as working hard, or it may be something else.

    I'm always been an "even steven" type of person and that applies to my indie author career. A book will flop, counterbalanced by a book that does unexpectedly well. The flop usually has all my energy + ad money behind it. The success has no ad money behind it. In the scheme of my writing career, I don't think I've had any glowing successes, just tiny victories that managed to save me from losing my shirt. After watching this video, I definitely need to manifest and envision more positive outcomes... with a reasonable /attainable goal in mind. You’re a “build it and they will come” kind of manifestor. Capricorn likes to feel that they are controlling the process as well, and that’s actually part of the satisfaction. It’s like an initial “inspiration” has to spark the vision, then you almost let it tell you what happened next to get you from here to there. What would I need to know to be the person who achieved this thing? I “manifest” many things this way too and also bristle at too much hokum and twaddle, in spite of the fact that I work in a hokumey field lol. I make sure there’s no twaddle. Capricorn moon. I’m an “open-minded skeptic”. Haha no wonder I like you! 🤗

    Can I just say, a lot of the things that help you and that you figured out on your own, like planning the imaginary path, are things I read a self help book for so good job, and you saved the money xD
    I personally don't believe in manifestation as in the "woowoo" part, but I do think that working hard *while* believing you can achieve your goals definitely affects... how you work? If that makes sense. Your health, be it mental or physical, is strongly dependent on that kind of thing. Having hope, much like having love and stable relationships, will make you more resilient etc. thus increasing your odds of success. On the flip side, working hard while thinking "this is never gonna work out", will more likely lead to burnout and such .-.

    I think I'm "that friend", actually. Idk why, but I've always gotten lucky with things. Stuff just seems to go just about as good as I need on a base level, leaving me hopeful and willing to work harder for better results.
    I'm quite young, just 18, so I'm at a crossroads in life. I need to choose what to do and how to do it, I need to get out there, and it's very scary.
    And yet there's a feeling in my heart, that everything will be alright. I mean, I know everything will be alright. It's almost a mindset. Like, I remember bad things that have happened, i imagine possible worst outcomes, and, like, life just goes on. And if it doesn't, welp, that's fate right there. It might feel a little insensitive, because I'm quite privileged, but there are definitely things that have gone awry quite terribly. But, like, I'm still here. In the moment shit feels horrible, terrifying, life-shattering. But i know it will stop at some point.
    Its much more complicated, of course, but that's the foundation of it.
    Sometimes it really feels like someone's watching over me and pushing me in the right direction, wanting me to succeed, and I'm forever grateful for it.

    • @lidiyafoxgloveauthor
      @lidiyafoxgloveauthor  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it's great that you already have that sense, because when I was 18 I was so panicked about everything but over time I have come to realize that everything usually is all right. Like, even when something very unpleasant has happened it usually leads to growth and better circumstances later.

    That said, I have done things like tell friends that the perfect house at the perfect price would show up, only for them to message me three days later saying, um, we found the perfect house at the perfect price, we just weren't expecting it to be so soon! or deciding that I'd find the right car at the right price in the city my in laws lived in, and that we'd drive over to pick it up and have a nice visit, and we totally did...

    This isn’t related to your video, but I hope to get your thoughts on something. I watched a podcast the other day where the guest said if you’re enjoying what you’re doing, you’ll go into a “flow state”. Where you should enjoy the process instead of just grinding toward the outcome.
    I thought back about how I feel when writing. I don’t remember ever experiencing “flow state” when writing. Instead, it usually feels like constipation where it’s so difficult to translate the scenes in my head into words.
    Realizing I don’t actually enjoy the process (writing) but only want the outcome (a finished book), I’m deciding to stop writing (but I want to finish the current book I’m writing first because I’d like to get the message of the book out there about a potential dystopian scenario from mass unemployment due to job automation).
    Just curious if you ever felt this way.

    • @thewanlorn
      @thewanlorn 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Hey, I was reading comments and yours resonated with me so much. I *hate* the actual act of writing. It is like pulling teeth to get started and it's just not enjoyable for me 99.99999% of the time. But "having written" feels soooooooooo good that, to me, it's worth the struggle. So like, if it's not worth it for you, it's totally okay to quit writing, but don't do it just because you're not obtaining a flow state! There are people out there like you! You're not alone.
      ETA: Also, though, it is super frustrating that people don't seem to talk about this! I refuse to believe that you and me and one of my friends are the only people who feel this way about writing.

    • @squeakyscauldron

      I can’t remember who it was exactly, maybe Gaiman or King or someone of that ilk, who has said that exact thing. That writing is rough, but having written is yum. (Haha, paraphrased obv.) So there are even very successful authors who feel this way!

    • @lidiyafoxgloveauthor
      @lidiyafoxgloveauthor  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes. I relate to this. I DO get into a flow state with writing, and it is delicious. It MOSTLY happens when I'm writing in my main fantasy world, most of my books were written without flow state, but a few of the indie romances got there and they are always my favorite ones.
      However, I am totally this way with art. I have always enjoyed sketching and for YEARS I thought I wanted to be a comic book creator, not a novelist. Eventually, though, I realized I don't really enjoy doing art as much as I just enjoy seeing my characters on the page. I like looking through old sketchbooks and this record of their lives. I don't get into a flow state, though, and doing art for many hours a day would burn me out SO fast. I had to admit I probably didn't have what it takes to be a professional artist, although I could certainly continue making art on the side on a more relaxed schedule. I don't want to not do it, but I don't want to do it professionally. I also put art aside in my really hardcore writing work years, and I was okay with that, whereas if I don't write I am miserable.
      I think it's good to acknowledge that sometimes we like doing something, or we like the results of something, but we wouldn't really want to do it ALL. THE. TIME. Which is the perfect circumstance for just having a day job and enjoying it as a hobby or little low-stakes side business.

    I’ve studied this phenomenon a lot, for many years, and my understanding is that you must ask for what you want (no need to ask a lot - the Universe hears you the first time), then don’t try to plan out exactly how to do it (just as the religious folks say, “God works in mysterious ways”) you’ll only interfere with the divine process if you try to control it too much. I had to learn this because it was not natural for me. But I eventually got it. So, just take all the inspired actions after that.
    Caveat, don’t take actions inspired when you’re in a negative state. Only take inspiration from when you’re in a positive state. Then you can feel confident that those actions will be moving you towards your desired goals. Finally, you have to FEEL as you would feel upon achieving your goal. The emotion is KEY. Imagine how you’ll feel once you achieve the goal and play that scenario in your mind.Enjoy it! Have fun and be lighthearted about it. The way I think of it is like daydreaming. Just get in there and really daydream! And yes, you have to obviously take action. But you don’t need to push yourself. You’ll be inspired to do the action needed. The hard part is learning to acknowledge and trust and allow that. But it gets easier.
    So ask for what you want, daydream about how awesome it will be, take all the inspired actions that you have. Be patient and don’t push or constantly check your progress. Just enjoy it and allow yourself to get into your flow state when it applies.

    Do I believe in Manifesting through Magic or "Quantum mechanics"? No, like your example with Anne Frank I believe this to be deeply cynical and heartless for people not living in a place and time like ours. I do, however believe in the concept "you can't Hit a target you don't see."

  • @thewanlorn
    @thewanlorn 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    As someone who believes in manifesting in a way, I can not *stand* those types of creatives. You can't manifest other people's (re)actions. You just can't! The universe doesn't give you control over that, no matter how much you try to ~manifest~ it. "Success" by most metrics depends on other people being into what you're doing and just. Ugh.
    And it's so frustrating to see creatives buying into this because it means if you're *not* successful, you're the one doing something wrong. Except, like, success is SO lightning-strikes. You can write the best thing you've ever written and something that has a bunch of major flaws, and the one that's full of major flaws ends up being the one that's your most popular work! Ask me how I know :(
    idk I guess the thing being in fandom and writing tons of fanfic has taught me about success is that a lot of it is chance. Like, there are SO many factors that go into publishing a book, that it's a lot of work to sit down and like. Math out (figurative) what you're "doing wrong." But fic is like post it and link on your social media and that's it. Makes it way easier to math out the amount (lots) of just random chance that goes into success.
    Apparently this video struck a cord with me omg I'm so sorry (but not sorry enough not to leave the comment lmao)
    (Also: no such thing as too many cats (lie)!!! I used to have six, and now I'm down to four which is a more reasonable number.)

    I think that manifestation is a form of magic. That is, they're real but don't work the way most people think. They are processes we use to communicate with our subconscious that guide and focus our actions...which can have a powerful effect. Our minds do so much without us ever being aware of it, and this extends to unconscious communication with others as well as making us more alert to opportunities and possibilities.

  • @christinec28
