To me, when I saw the first few episodes of one piece I thought that luffy looked stupid and it was going nowhere, but after a bit I loved him, and he was as badass as ever.
Well about him being slow at the beginning, one moment sticks out to me is when he was fighting Kuro and at one point, Luffy threw a punch and Kuro easily stood on top of his arm and was able to attack Luffy.
