    Hi i am new in into sharpening the straight razor. I have a Dovo Nr.41 Inox Steel. I have 1k/3k wetstone and a blue Belgien broken 5 to 6k natural stone for my kitchen knives. My question is if i need a other stone or is it fine to do the Job with what i have?

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Lycanta! I have found I need at least a Shapton M5 12k for an extra keen edge or an ILR (Imperia La Roccia ultra fine) to get a smooth shave-ready edge. Check this video th-cam.com/video/3b2uh_pdm9g/w-d-xo.html "If I Could Only Have One... Set of Hones to Maintain My Straight Razor". This can give you a better idea of what is out there. • @AdventuresInWetShaving

      Great question Ed! I believe that is a barber's notch, barbers would use this the hold on to that end of the straight razor to give them better control over the blade. I only know of one person that uses that barber's notch to shave with today, but there may be more.

    Hello I would like to ask you why when we shave with Straight Razor we should not use pre shave oil? Thank you.

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question Παναγιώτης Δε! ;) Pre-shave oil does work really well for DE razors. I have tried both pre-shave oils and creams and I've found the creams works better for me than the oils. What I believe works the best as a pre-shave is to lather up your face with a gentle bath soap let it seat on your face for a couple of minutes rinse it off and than dry your face off. This will clean your beard and remove any oil or dirt in your whiskers making them stiffer for your Straight Razor to cut through without bending. Give it a go and see if it will work for you, everybody is different.

    i have found the biggest adding to comfort in my shave is to use 3.5 passes using mostly with the grain and across the grain as well as a few against the grain in a few areas. do you find there is an area on your neck that regardless ofthe razor you use. going across or against the grain are uncomfortable? just going across the grain on my left neck is always uncomfortable regardless of the straight razor i use. even used one that was finished on a japanese natural. i wonder what i could do to make it less painful in that area

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great questions Snuffman! On the sides of my neck both the north-to-south, and south-to-north passes are across the grain, and it's comfortable for me because I shave with a very shallow shaving angle. I believe when you're shaving your neck you need a shallower shaving angle, try holding your razor flatter to your skin. Please let me know how you are getting on.

    Been putting off learning how to hone a straight for ages out of fear of the learning curve. So I bought a Gold Dollar 66, 30x loupe and some stones for practice and so far haven't killed it. Took me about 2 hours on a 1000grit to set the bevel, as the factory bevel was atrocious. Does it normally take this long people?

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question @WogChilli ! It all depends on the shape of the blade, with most straight razors it will go a bit quicker. The next time your Gold Dollar 66 will be easy to set the bevel. A lot of times you can get a vintage straight razor on the cheap and the blade will be easier to set the bevel. I look for razors with at least 6/8 to 7/8 blade width in good shape.

  • @mortenkristoff
    @mortenkristoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello Eric, and thanks a lot for all of your very informative videos.
    I have a great honing challenge and I hope you may give me some advices.
    I’m using an ILR as a finishing stone, and my razors pass both the treetop test as well as the hanging hair test. The hair pops off easily all along the edge. But still the razors don’t give a comfortable shave. At one occasion recently I had to switch to a shavette for the second and third pass to finish my shave.
    Could you direct me to a certain stage in the honing process where I should start to figure out the problem? None of my razors fail the wobbling test (ref. drmatt357), thus I consider the bevels to be well set.
    I would appreciate your advice very much.
    Have a great week!

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question Morten! ;) Sharpness doesn't seem to be the problem. I would try a very shallow angle when you're shaving. Lay your straight razor flat and just raise the spine slightly that should give you a more comfortable shave by itself.
      What does your honing progression look like? Are you using the under-running water technique to finish on your ILR?
      Thanks for your great comment and thanks for watching! :) Take care and stay safe, have a great week my friend! :) #Heart

    • @mortenkristoff
      @mortenkristoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdventuresInWetShaving Thanks a lot for your kind reply, Eric! Yes, I always use a very shallow angle when shaving. I recently tried a shavette for the first time, and that’s now my preference for a shave ready razor. Though I know that a straight razor probably never will be that sharp. The shavette became a very good tool for me to develop my shaving technique, since it shaves so effortless and smooth. Maybe that could be a good topic for a video, Eric? Some believe that a very sharp razor is very dangerous. But in my world a dull razor is far more dangerous.
      When finishing on my ILR I do these three steps: Honing with slurry, honing on water sprayed stone and then under running water. Then I do 30 laps on a strop pasted with chrome oxide before stropping.
      One important question: When the ILR gets sticky during the under-running water process, does it mean I have reached the full potential of the ILR, and there is no reason to go any further?
      Have a great day, Eric!

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Morten once your straight razor gets sticky on your ILR you have reached the full potential of the stone. You may very well be over honing your razor. As soon as your razor gets sticky I would go straight to the smooth leather side of your strop with 40-60 laps. Skip the pasted strop altogether and try shaving with your razor from there. You may find it works better my friend! :) #Heart

    • @mortenkristoff
      @mortenkristoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdventuresInWetShaving Eric, you have probably hit the target! Over honing!! It could very well be that I’ve pushed the razor too much after the ILR got sticky… What effect does that have on the edge? Where should I begin to restore the edge again? Should I go back to a 10k stone? Thanks a lot for your help, I appreciate it very much 🙋🏼‍♂️

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Morten! ;) This tends to make the edge harsh and uncomfortable.
      Start on your 10k stone then go to your ILR under running water until your razor gets sticky. Do 7-10 laps on your smooth leather strop, then go back to your ILR under running water until it gets sticky again and finally strop on the smooth leather 40-60 laps and give it a go :) #Heart
