I remember when it was "the Big 5" of Liverpool, Everton, Man Utd, Arsenal and Spurs. Chelsea were nowhere near being consider a big club pre-Abramovich, nor were Man City pre-Abu Dhabi and Everton have dropped down the table in both respects over the past three decades.

There was a revolving door for no. 6 in those days. Sometimes it was Vila, sometimes Forest, sometimes even Leeds.

To some extent the media play their part in maintaining the difference between which teams are elite and which teams are merely player stepping stones. To use Newcastle as an example, if any of our first team players are rested or rotated, even for a single match, then stories are immediately written about that player wanting to move on. This season alone it's happened with Trippier (Bayern Munich), Bruno (City), Isak (Arsenal) and Gordon (Liverpool) even though no actual bids have been received for any of them, and most of those players have needed a rest, particularly after international windows.
It's as if the very idea of a top player being part of a squad rather than a guaranteed starter every match, is only allowed at some clubs and not others. If City leave out Foden, i don't see the same kind of stories being written about him.

Yeah, if you look at the past 10, 15, 20 seasons in terms of league points earned, the big 6 end up as the top 6 teams in there. Even if here and there a couple fall down, they don't stay there for long enough in comparison to the teams around them who struggle to maintain that level of consistency.

The sky 6 have made it that no other clubs are allowed to compete, its disgraceful that Nufc and Villa have to sell when they are both in the best position they have been for years, despite having wealthy owners. PSR is purely in place to make sure no club can come in and win the leauge or compete at the highest level.

    • @SKa-tt9nm
      @SKa-tt9nm 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

Eliminating PSR would ensure that no other clubs outside of city and Newcastle ever come close to a title again. How can you not see that?

@@SKa-tt9nmyou all keep conflating incompetence with an unfair advantage for the opponent. United have been terrible for a decade, without Champions League money for 60% of that time and have still spent £400 million more than City have in that same time. If United had been run as well as City they’d have run the Premier League the way Bayern does the Bundesliga. And that’s not even include £800 million wasted on servicing the ownership’s debt.

There’s no replacement for money and management. In that regard it’s Liverpool, City, and Arsenal out front with Newcastle chasing at a distance. Still too soon to know if Villa and Chelsea will stay consistent, even with the cash available. Spurs have major internal problems to sort out, United are years away from being competitive again, and the others are all still too new to success. I will say, as a Villa fan, I have loved seeing the chaos Forest and Cherries have brought to the table!

the idea the prem is boring if you arent in contention to win it is a bonkers shout. brighton & bournemouth & brentford are tiny clubs historically who through decade long developments became world class operations, playing exciting football with near world class players. that is accessible to any club in the pyramid with the right owner funding. they will play european football. the idea a conference league away game wouldnt be exciting to a fan currently watching their league 2 club is wrong. even bouncing between prem & championship makes clubs richer & raises their ceiling

I think Swansea City of 2012 - 2016 had a lot of influence in the philosophy change of smaller clubs seen today. They were always stubborn in their progressive playing style, along with shrewd player and manager recruitment. Laudrup won them a league cup at a budget.

Yes but it's now a big 8 - Newcastle and Aston Villa have joined Man United, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs (yes they still are part of the group) and Chelsea. It could easily be a big ten if Forest continue to improve, and someone else joins the party (Leicester at one stage looked like they might).

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. It was David Dean at The Arsenal who was instrumental and the lead instigater along with the spurs chairman of the time to break away from the football league. They then roped in united and the two scouser clubs. It was then the Big Two, Ferguson Vs Wenger Arsenal Vs Man u who's rivalry built the so-called premier league around the world. There is only 3 historically big clubs in England, Liverpool, man u and The Arsenal everyone else in this Big 6 is just Mickey Mouse with money.

The landscape changed with dodgy Russian abramovich & the corrupt City group.
Sky loved that they were blowing other teams out of the water buying whoever without consequences.
Everton have been the big casuality. Villa also but they have clawed their way back to an extent.
Spurs have done great from a business perspective and largely retained a decent position.
    Poch overachieved.
They have never been a top club for trophies though like Man U, Liverpool & Arsenal although they should have picked up more than 1 cup since Levy came in.
Everton, Villa & Newcastle are their competitors for the 'natural' big 6.
Although obviously as i said Chelsea & Man City through dodgy ownership bought their way into the big 6 & has made it harder for Spurs, Everton,Villa, Newcastle to win silverware.

Chelsea and City are both West Ham-level clubs that get confused for being big because of their vast fortunes. Leeds won the league in the season before Prem was created, a big team.
Newcastle are the 3rd best performing team in the premier league after Man U & Arsenal, up until Bobby Robson leaves. Way ahead of Tottenham/City/Spurs in avg league position since Prem began in 92.
If Mike Ashley doesn't derail Newcastle, then we would undoubtedly be amongst this 'big six'. All that growth in those years he is running our club on a shoestring, those clubs grow and grow, while we stagnate. Even when we went down we walked the championship twice. Far to big a club for it.
We are just back to where we belong simply. The fan base, the stadium; it is a far bigger club than you are given it credit for in this video. There is no better fan base in the prem. The team just needs to break the duck and win a trophy, and it can be a far more organic version of City or Chelsea. More like a Liverpool with real authentic passionate northern soul.
In my youth Tottenham were a lower mid table team who played nice football and conceeded a lot of goals. They are back to what they should be
