The axe and shovel are there in case you find yourself in a tight spot w/ fire racing towards your fire line and you, the swamper, and the boss realize there's no time to jam outta there. You gotta push out from the best clearing available, make it big as possible until flames are almost upon you, then bail out of the cab w/ your fire shelter and use shovel to make room under the dozer, deploy shelter and crawl up under the cab area. And then pray.....I guess.

You dont need a shovel on a dozer

I appreciate you taking the time to explain the difference, I ran plow tractor in wildland for several years until health issues forced my retirement, worked many lines and many fires..... I know that the newer Deere and Cat machines have fire settings in the ecm modules that increase the power and torque settings, many of the techs arent even familiar with them. Unless they have worked around the fire units... but, give me the good older machines that dont rely on computers and electronics, and a good swamper that knows what each of us expects and anticipates and I'd cut line forever! just found your tube but do enjoy it! Stay safe!!

If I was doing fire work I would have all hoses and tools on hand as well as any other common parts that break and easily repairable

Agreed. Spare of every hydrologic hose, fuel filters, hoses, clamps, hand tools, fire curtains, grease gun, big ass j bar, multiple extinguishers, antifreeze (great to have after repairing a blow coolant hose) all in swamper vehicle and available at all times!
Be prepared for anything at any time!
The more you have to work with the better.
Axe and shovel could save your life and your brothers.
      Best regards. Ty for sharing

I like that old D5. Although the case is probably much more comfortable at the end of the day.

Oh. I would have guessed a fire dozer is when the belly pan hasn't been cleaned out and all rubbish in there catches fire and burns the dozer up.

No cable dozers for fire dozers so you're pushing along a fire line close to embers and sometimes small fires in stumps and in logs and you blow a hose or something catches and breaks a fitting and now you feed the fire and possibly burn the machine. We use to do a lot of fire work around NYS and the Adirondacks and we always ran D7 Cats and an Allis Chalmers HD21 all cable dozers my grandfather said we were there to help stop and contain the fire not feed it and was the reason we had all cable dozers. We never had enclosed cabs because my grandfather said they were coffins. We ran those old dozers from 1959 right through to 1987 when we got out of fire work and went into just excavation work sold the cable cats to a pipe outfit that installed side booms on them for laying pipe we kept the HD21 because there weren't many of those around and it became our shop yard ordament.

Thanks for the video bro! I can’t believe Case won’t support that dozer anymore that’s sickening. My D5N is a 2006 also and I plan on having it a long time!

Okay well I don't know it all but I'm trying to learn, since you do sign contracts with CAL-FIRE, going over the lists for Pay. Since you are a type 2 &1 dozer operator as well as you're the CDL operator for your truck is the truck paid per day as well or only when the truck is in operation(moving)? I'm trying trying to set up a business module for myself and begin a career company and I do see the profit as well as just the good deed in having operators helping in fire situations. My goal was to have a universal type 1 dozer and truck as well as hire/employee a heavy water tender operator. Is the business market there or would having a larger private firm with connections to the larger fire agencies and land agencies help out in producing a productive company in regards to wildland fire?

Axe and shovel are very important. Shovel your tracks clean before loading or dig your kiss my ass goodbye hole.
The axe comes in handy for any stuck timber on machine including in the tracks, and it works well for attitude adjustments. 😂😂😂

Cable dozers built this Country and most of the modern World. They fought along with our soldiers in WWII building runways, roads, clearing jungles, and so on. Yeah, they don`t have certain abilities as hydraulic dozer do but, you learn not to get yourself in those situations to begin with. Hydraulics is nice but I grew up with cable and it gets the job done.

Wouldn't the forest service want a reinforced roof to protect against falling treetops and branches? (@ 2:10)

i was gona say when we where loging we got comandered for a fire they would only take the cable dosers that where turbo charged. we had brush blades and they realy liked those. i plowed fire lines across riges and dove down washes for breakes not good duty
by the way we had the old oil bath air cleaners and had no issues

What about the filters? Are they made of a special fire retardant material? it would make sense given the conditions these run in.

Grousers on an excavator, that's rich! I started on an old cable operated D6 with a pony motor starter, I don't hardly hear anyone talking about cable rigs. Thanks for the education! I'll take a cat or a komatsu any day!
