@@mema2764 Agreed. It was easily the best match. I've watched Omega's classic matches in NJPW and he usually shows out. I expected Kidd and him to tear the house down, and they didn't disappoint.
@MerryOlSoulGigglesmith shouldn't even have forbidden door this year when Dynasty is a joint PPV. Having another one more later in the year would be overkill
AEW destroyed 3 companies minimum. Themselves, New Japan, and ROH. Tony basically signed all of ROH, gobbled up NJPW’s main event scene which now needs to be completely rebuilt, and doesn’t know what to do with any of them. Those established NJPW guys should have been used to show off how good the next generation was (Tsuji, Umino, Narita, and Uemura especially. Gabe Kidd too).
I've been watching New Japan since the early 2000's, when Inoki had the brilliant idea of having shoot matches between his top stars and future MMA Hall of Famers (yeah, it didn't end too well). As much as the fans want to crap on the Meij Era of New Japan... remember, their aggressive American expansion was built around Kenny Omega (mostly) and then The Elite/Bullet Club. The US Championship, Intercontinental Championship, NEVER Championship, and the NJPW Strong Championship were all part of that plan. Anyway, my point is... as much as Tony Khan killed New Japan's serious American run (the Strong Titles are NJPW's limp to the finish line), New Japan themselves also squashed their own appeal and logic. Gimmick matches, random belts (KOPW, for example), and factions/stars just floating in the ether at this point. As much as I respect New Japan, I'm starting to wonder if they'll do well going into Forbidden Door and beyond. CMLL stays in its lane, all factors considering, so they'll survive another 90 years doing what they normally do. New Japan legitimately is heading the same way that AJP is, and a good chunk is because of AEW and Tony Khan.
The Intercontinental title was already a thing before the Elite. They created it in 2011 when they came to the US for a tour with an indie called Jersey All Pro. MVP was actually the first IWGP IC champ.

This must be the coldest Japanese pro wrestling has been in years and years. Japanese wrestling as a whole, not just New Japan. Yes, there are still great talents and matches and whatnot, but according to many people Japanese wrestling has never been this out of mainstream and cold. Outside of maybe Tana and Okada, there aren't any stars in NJPW who are mainstream and even they are not on the same level as the stars from the 70s, 80s, 90s and even 00s. Again, yes Kenny just had another great match and there are new guys with great potential in New Japan, All Japan, Noah, DragonGate, literally any company there, but nobody really cares. There's always a buzz around January 4th but outside of that, people just don't talk about it. It's just super cold. Not established and unknown new guys alongside wayyy out of prime older stars. That's a problem with all of the promotions there, not just New Japan. If someone who is more in the know than I am with the current puroresu situation can comment, I'd really like to know what you think about all this.
I am only a domestic flight away from Tokyo. I wish I made the trek around ten or so years ago when they still had decent stars around. I still haven't been and won't be going unless they build or get some stars. From the older generation who were fans decades ago, I've basically been told not having TV/major TV is the deciding factor in pro wrestling not having popularity or any real cache in the mainstream.
The TV must be one of the top problems, that was Noah's and AJPW's problem in the 2000s, they lost their prime time slots and it all went downhill. Like I personally stopped caring about them in 2020, and I tried to get back into it but I just couldn't. And they began having all of those gimmick matches that we see everywhere else which I am tired of. @@james2651

6:40 In English, the Japanese sound ど is written as “do”. However unlike English where the word is pronounced with a u sound (like in use) the Japanese pronunciation is a hard O like “So”. The “U” that is used (う) often is an extension of the hard O sound that came before. So in Japanese his name is どうき, but is translated to Douki. However, the pronunciation is more like Doe-ki.

New Japan New Year's Shows were a spectacle. The best times were the 90's & early 2000's when they worked with the Pride Fighting group. Watched this show and it didn't have the spectacle. Major downgrade. But, it wasn't bad.
NJPW when tjey first got their US TV deal was on fire and they basically hit on everything. To go from that to this is a shame
@@mema2764 Agreed. It was easily the best match. I've watched Omega's classic matches in NJPW and he usually shows out. I expected Kidd and him to tear the house down, and they didn't disappoint.
The forbidden door should only be every few years.im tired of seeing AEW in every other promotion.
@MerryOlSoulGigglesmith shouldn't even have forbidden door this year when Dynasty is a joint PPV. Having another one more later in the year would be overkill
Tony Khan's business strategy adapted from Young Bucks philosophy :
"KILLING THE BUSINESS"
Now three wrestling companies went down into the ground
😂
Tony doing the very thing smarks always thought Vince would do will never not be funny.
Talk about Kevin Kelly's buddy Chris Charlton!
Just to note, I'm pretty sure the Young Bucks won the heavyweight tag titles right before they left NJPW
i think they won it once yeah
@@newjerseyanthey were a record 7-Time IWGP Junior Tag Team Champions, a 1-time Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, and a 2 Time NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Champions
You guys gotta talk about the njpw commentator being suspended for burying tony khan on air 😭😭
Context?
an announcer was talking about aew taking their talent or something
He said a “Money Mark” stole many of njpws talents away
Bro is not wrong too🤣.
As punk used to say to a mark “you have a vagina!”
Really? 😆
Wait, are we pronouncing Ishii's name correctly now? R.I.P. to a great soundbyte. You'll be missed.😢
18:58 wrestling isn’t the only thing around the world that “American influence” has totally fucked up
I think he meant Persephone. Pronounced Per-se-phony. Named after the Greek goddess of the underworld. Hades’ wife.
really goes to show how much the Bullet Club has really carried New Japan after all those years
New Japan from the late-70s through the mid-90s was freakin’ incredible. What a sad decline.
3:05 to the 4 minute mark got me rolling 😂
Hearing Brian try to pronounce people's names and failing hard is more entertaining than AEW.
The Bucks absolutely told Kenny to not run a program over there unless he gets them invited and then they win the tag belts because they 'deserve' it. And then after Jungle Dork went over there by himself they let him be the only one in their group to eat a pin.
Sorry Jack, but the Bucks got what they wanted. You're just a loose end to them.
@jamjams4902 and they know Jack is going nowhere. WWE aren't touching him with Punk bring there and to them, TNA/MLW/NWA is beneath AEW. So basically the Buckaroo is using this take advantage of Jack
They clearly don't like jungle toy and got him to start on punk etc and he doesn't realise it at all.
Justice for Chris Charlton. He got suspended by New Japan for telling the truth about Tony and Y
AEW
I watched WD just to see Kenny and Gabe, but every match I noticed how empty the Dome looked...and it was sad tbh.
Purse-A-Phone lol!
Brian can’t lecture Jim or anyone else about not pronouncing shit correctly when he can’t pronounce one of the most famous Greek myths correctly 😂
15:35 Jim & Brian are wrong here; the Bucks DID compete for and win the Heavyweight tag titles during their initial NJPW run.
My favorite part of their New Japan reviews is Brian trying to read their names.
Not a peep from Meltzer about Tony killing NJPW's business.......What a shocker.
If Brian had seen Persephone's 'Anna Jay' style blessings I think he'd learn how to pronounce her name
Tony Kahn puts the “yack” in yakuza
If i Owned a Wrestling Company i wouldn't want my Wrestler's any Where near AEW Dudes .. Yuck 😂
Big Swole?
F*** me! They're STILL doing Bullet Club???
There's so much Bullet Club...there's like 3 factions in New Japan and then "Bullet Club Gold" in AEW, which as far as I can tell is *just* Juice and Jay White, who are both injured like all the time.
It's had more members than the nWo at this point
@@james2651
The stars either got older or just left the company around that time. AEW and the pandemic have really made it difficult for them to get back on the horse.
Stardom is growing. They're trying to draw 10,000 at Yokohama Arena in April which will be the biggest women's show since the 90s.
We need Dave’s star ratings for the 2 nights…Tokyo Dome tax bout to go crazy lol 😂
Shota Umino has to be the poorest excuse for a Tokyo Dome main eventer in the history of WrestleKingdom. He is like if Yoshi-Hashi received an Okada-level push.
I’ve heard this too, that fans of NJPW would prefer Tsuji or Sanada in the main event.
Then again, ZSJ doesn’t strike me as main event talent either
I thought it was Rene Goulet who said, "Ze clown is down!"
Chris Farley: "Hatchi..ju..hatchi?"
For the love of God I don't speak Japanese
::other contestants cut their finger off::
Jim needs to watch that Omega match. It was great,
he would not see it that way, I Loved the match and I like Jim but god i feel he would hate 90 percent of the match.
@@ThePhoenix24He has shown more liking to Omega and praised him a few times the past two years especially in his Wrestle Kingdom match with Will Ospreay 2 years ago. Idk but let’s see if he reviews it and see his response.
January 4 is a bank holiday so that night will always be bigger
We asians stopped watching new japan noah is where its at rn
NOAH has been the best since it started imo. And it's certainly the best rn. NJPW was great but I think the Elite stuff kinda tainted it. Kinda wish that AJPW was doing more rn also.
Tony and The Elite ruined NJPW
Curious, how is All Japan these days? Last I heard they were struggling but that might just be rumors.
@@coryfusting9294 They give their world championship title to Davey Boy Smith Jr in boring match, and month later he lost that title to one of their tag team champions. So your rumors was right
OZAWA is the true King Of Pro Wrestling.
Everything Tony touches dies
He's like Jeff myrtlebank reincarnated
Tony has the reverse Midas touch lol
They said they sold 16 thousand tickets, but it looked like 3 thousand
The Ichiban Sweet Boys stole their gimmick from the world famous Slip House Boys
"Purse-a-phone"? Mr. Last needs to brush up on his Greek mythology and pronunciation 😂
Tokyo Dome seated over 40 thousands and NJPW did enough to fill 20 thousand arena. Kinda of tough and underwhelming for the promoters. If NJPW did the Madison’s they sell out. Bryan it’s Ah-Zoom-Me
Mone holding all the belts ........
As a fan i would lime to see a somewhat regular report on Japanese wrestling, i enjoyed this NJPW focus here, maybe like a 3 or 4 times a year , a basic overview like wrestlE kigbdim and msybe a G1 report after it concludes.....,, nothing super detailed just an update. . Please
Problem is Cornette is country bumpkin nationalist who doesn't want to watch foreign wrestling.
@@duckmercy11 well maybe asking nicely woukd help my cause. Brian can summarize so jim dont have to do anything..
I heard from many people that both shows were pretty damn good.
I wish they were available on regular PPV ......
Why? Pay $8 for NJPW World and then cancel.
Not that Tony would do it but I’d send Jericho, Moxley, The Bucks, Perry, Okada, Ibushi, Yuta, Claudio & Ricochet to NJPW simply because no one in America can make money off of them.
3:49 Jim actually went higher than Michael Jackson 😂
AEW is holding NJPW back
As a '78 kid, I loved the black and white universal monster mashups (and Hammer films too)... This vid brings back fond memories watching them with parents. What a damn shame Universal is a mess using their library of monsters.
Kevin Knight is a great up and coming wrestler. He had a solid run in TNA. Cornette would be praising him if he saw him in WWE.
LOL at Brian saying "Purse-a-phone" when it's Persephone (pronounced Per-sif-own-e).
*pur-se-fa-nee
17:45 Also Chris Charlton who does the translation and commentary for NJPW was suspended by not Tony Khan for calling him for what he is and buries talent
1/5 is always a lower attendance because 1/4 is still the holidays in Japan
Seppuku sounds like a more appealing option than putting myself through an AEW show
It’s azumi
11:42 ….do Jim and Brian really not know how to pronounce Persephone? One of the more famous Greek myths?
I’m heartbroken that Dookie lost his sh**!
El desperado vs Dookie 💩 was an instant classic
"the concept of it".
Brilliant.
What's wrong with doing a Japanese tour? Eight shows or whatever. Hit the mid-sized venues in major markets over there.
I would pay money to hear Jim and Brian reading all of the Japanese PPV cards.
Brian butchering Persephone had me dying. Its a classic Greek name with a difficult spelling. Per Se Pho Nee lol
New Japan had so much promise 10 years ago.
A few things:
I love that Brian thinks Ren Narita must be hispanic.
Kidd was working heel and trying to cripple Kenny, Kenny had to work heel too because Kidd had been cutting promos on AEW for poaching talent. The fans seem to be rightly pissed about this.
That's it? Those are the matches Mercedes quit WWE to do? A clunker with Britt Baker in Wembley and a guest appearance in the Tokyo Dome after she found out that Stardom couldn't afford to keep her there full time? What's left for her to do now that she's crossed off all the big shows on her list?
I find alot of joy in Dustin Rhodes working the Tokyo Dome in 2025.
Kenny was the only world champion who came back for the crossover show. If course it didn't draw.
Brian throwing pans down the stairs again. So let me get this straight they couldnt draw in two nights combined what WWE drew in one night for the Royal Rumble? So twinkle toes returns and fights Gabe Kid. Who is Gabe Kid?

In English, the Japanese sound ど is written as “do”.
You can blame what started aew the dude that wrestled the blowup doll and the twinks that attempt to play the the wish version of the rock and roll express.
Apparently Shibata has only been billed in exhibitions in Japan since his infamous surgery. For the life of me, I can't tell if it is a work or if he legitimately can't get full clearance in Japan.
He legitimately can't get clearance. In his first exhibition match he essentially doubled crossed New Japan and worked a regular match, which resulted in him being borderline blacklisted.
@cameron3578 Makes sense. Saraya was magically cleared to wrestle again once AEW needed her.
How come Aew never lets new Japan talent win one of their titles
Brian not understanding how to pronounce Persephone and poking fun of it when it exposes that he cut class to eat meatball subs the week they covered Greek mythology in high school.
WWE needs to make a deal with NJPW so they stop doing business with AEW.
That won't Help. Japan style of wrestling is closer to AEW than it is to WWE.
@sionrouge1697 It would help new Japan out more. I know it won't help wwe
They already have a deal with Pro-Westling NOAH.
@Thepathofpeace101 they will when NJPW comes to them for help to get another TV deal in the US. WWE isn't stupid to do business on stuff they can't control if they approach NJPW. Tony "connection" came from his dad, and a lot of them are laughing at Tony behind his back. WWE would be able to control the partnership with them having Nick Khan to helping with his actual connection in Hollywood
@@Thepathofpeace101then why do the charity work? TKO is a business, it does not care if the whole pro-wrestling industry breaks… well, it has been broken a long time ago, and WWE is the only thing that is relevant.
The pronunciation of "per-seff-o-knee" gave a grwat laugh from my sick bed.
Kenny's Dynasty match was really good. I'd never seen Kidd before and he was impressive too. They had good chemistry together. It was more of a fight as opposed to the flippy stuff.
"You try to sell out a building that big two nights in a row."
Nobody can...because nobody should be dumb enough to try.
I don't think the point was to sell it out, but profit off whatever tickets they could sell. Even though night two only did 16,000 that's higher than the capacity of most buildings NJPW runs in Japan.
