  • You get 2 DIYs for the price of one in this Frugal Friday video!
    If you already have mica powders/chameleon powders and gum arabic you can use that, otherwise I will list what I used below. Also, I'll show you how to decorate a standard black tin which is a great way to gussy up an old scratched one!
    I am using a lot of supplies from Let's Resin amzn.to/3z5k8IX *This is not sponsored but they did give me a coupon code to share with you so if you are in need of the chameleon powders, resin, or what to try their alcohol inks you can save some money and their prices are very reasonable to begin with:
    Discounts:
    Amazon US: For all the epoxy resin, UV resin, silicone rubber kit, pigments, mica powders (that is to say all the liquid and powder products), 10% off discount code: Lindsay36
    For all the molds, tools, stickers, 10% off discount code: Lindsay11
    *Amazon UK: 10% off discount code: Lindsay10
    Supplies (affiliate links used)
    Chameleon and interference powders: amzn.to/3AluQvC
    Gum arabic: shrsl.com/3nm6y
    Full pans: amzn.to/3psT68O *or resue a container you have
    Black watercolor tin: amzn.to/3waFcf9
    *PS you can buy really cute tins that come with half pans if you want a cute tin but don't want to make it yourself: amzn.to/3QRRvos
    These are the alcohol inks I used on the tin: shrsl.com/3nm6q alcohol pearls) and I used rainbow iridescent ink (which you can probably just mix with normal alcohol ink for a similar effect) shrsl.com/3nm6s
    *If you only have regular alcohol ink you can spraypaint a tin white and ink on that as well as I did with my small palette.
    I used my UV resin kit I shared in a previous video and it works awesome to give it a protective glossy finish: amzn.to/3AJiVZ0
    *Remember if you are ordering from Let's Resin on Amazon amzn.to/3z5k8IX to use the discount codes above the supply list to save more.

    You add clove oil/honey when you liquify your powdered Gum Arabic!
    Fun Fact: In India, the gum arabic is considered very very healthy, and is eaten in some recipes (it's really really tasty as well!😛) The nutrition in gum arabic is the reason it catches fungus so soon. :)

      Do you have any idea on how much honey to add? I'm not sure if I'll make my own watercolours anytime soon, but the gum arabic I bought was powdered, so ...

    • @Obsidian_Iris_

      Do you mean to add clove oil OR honey to the powdered gum Arabic or both? Will this homemade liquid gum Arabic from powdered keep as long as the professionally manufactured liquid gum Arabic. I know it’s a preservative so it should, but I don’t want to waste half the pot of powdered if it’s best to make it on a per use basis. You wouldn’t happen to have a recipe for it would you? Thank you for your initial post and in advance it you provide the additional information!

    What a clever idea and a far cheaper way to make these than buying a pre made set. When you see how expensive all the tins of paints are getting now. I recently had a brows at some new water colours on eBay . I was so shocked at how much everything has gone up , almost as much as the food and every day prices. It’s quite sad really as Art is such an expensive hobby . I remember when I brought my first set of watercolours. It was so dear,but I had used school quality paints for years. Don’t get me wrong you can get some amazing results with them with a bit of experience. But with a family and one income it was not something I could justify spending money on. But when I went back to work I treated myself. And they were my treasured positioned for years,just replacing frequently used pans when needed. But this is is a clever idea and will save a lot of money ..Love n Light 🥰

    Oh my goodness, the sparkle of that Marabu Rainbow ink was so PRETTY! I love how your tin turned out and I'm definitely going to try one of my own. I really enjoy metallic/shiny paints even though I don't use them very often; they are some of my favorites. I need to make a point of finding a fun way to use them. I never thought of brushing the powder over a surface like that before - that was fun!

  • @Obsidian_Iris_
    @Obsidian_Iris_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This was so much fun to watch! I have everything except the liquid gum arabic, but I do have the powdered and clove essential oil so I may just go with that. If people are using clove oil as a preservative for paints they make to sell, it’s probably sufficient. I’d prefer to save my essential oil for other purposes, so I will eventually buy a bottle of liquid gum arabic since I enjoy the idea of creating things from scratch and experimenting. That Marabou medium is absolutely amazing! It didn’t just shimmer, it looked like it was actually moving; almost as if we’re alive! I remember you mentioned on another video that instead of buying alcohol pearls, you could add this to regular alcohol inks to get the same or better effect, so it was already on my list of items to try (I believe it was this medium). I love your tutorials and reviews since we benefit from your extensive experience with art supplies and your practice of finding out how the mediums are created and how the work. I am especially appreciative because I have fibromyalgia which greatly limits what I can do. Your sharing of your knowledge and experience saves me a lot of time and effort. Thank you! 💜 👏🏾 🌈 🌺

    I so understand how a project like this can get out of hand. I recently made some alcohol inks using my distress reinkers. I really wanted all 60 of the colors that I have in alcohol ink. Then I wanted to do it all over again using irredescent medium. Then try using the mica colors that I had on hand. I sadly... controlled myself and only made 12 colors. Though I do plan on trying to make some white alcohol ink. Your tin turned out great, very, very pretty.

    Your old "eyeshadow-to-water colour paint" tutorial gave me such pleasure in the early Covid-seclusion months. I never dreamed I could "make" water colour then, and this session just makes me want to "play" again. Handmade shimmer paint is scarce in South Africa, and pricey. I don't have a muller, yet, but wonder if mulling would make a difference to the Chameleon finished product?

      No, the shimmer pigments don't need mulling

    Beautiful colors! It’s fun to see you mix everything up 👍 Alcohol ink, IMHO, hands down, offers us the most dazzling effects and the most beautiful soft blends…can almost be like air brushing. BUT we have to keep it out of the light bc of the quick fading. I used to do a lot of alcohol ink art, but when I found out it has like zero lightfastness, I just moved away from it and haven’t returned. I have so many alcohol ink markers and may sell or donate most of them. I’ll keep some of my faves for other projects that are print reproductions or won’t see the light. I do mostly watercolor now and LOVE IT!

      I've used alcohol ink under resin and they're still pretty bright years later. I also have some fabric colored with home made alcohol inks and then sealed with mod podge. The fabric has been exposed to sunlight in a light filled room but has never faded so maybe the color in alcohol inks lasts longer when it's sealed. It's been about 8 years since the project.

    You need to only have one light source to see the color shift properly. I've seen someone use these for rock painting. She painted scarabs & they turned out so amazing. Thank you for experimenting & making a mess so we don't have to. Lol! Cool video!

    😁😁💜💙💚💛🧡❤💯😁😁Lindsey, I have been watching you for a number of years now and always loved when you would do the DIY art supplies. At the time you were making those videos , I was still teaching Elementary School and would love seeing less expensive ways that I could do a little Art in the classroom with the students relating it to something we were studying. I also loved when you would show student grade or less expensive products that could give an effect that was much better than a lot of the supplies that were available at the school. Sadly, much of the school budget shifted from purchasing art supplies to other areas of the budget. I ended up the last few years needing to buy everything from clay to make pinch pots to watercolors as well as craft supplies because I have always felt students connected better with learning information when they had hands on experience using fun things like art and cooking in the classroom. Yes, we woulf cook in the classroom for lunch once a month and tag it to whatever we were learning in social studies. I would love to see more of these mad scientists experiments. Or perhaps you could revisit some of your old videos and show us materials that are now available that weren't available back then that could be used. In any event I love your videos, and I have learned so much over the years. Thank you for sharing.

    Lots of oohs and aahs with sparkles and gloss! It’s fun seeing you cut loose and create. A couple of questions: Would you add glycerin to the paint mix to make rewetting easier? Are there different quality grades of gum arabic? Is more clear gum arabic better for transparency? (I guess that doesn’t matter with glitter paints.) Your new photo looks like the “Glamorous and Frugal Crafter!” 🥳

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all has an amber tone in the bottle but it won't show in paint. I don't add glycerin because I want it to fully dry out but you could if you are on an arid climate

    I love this kind of experimental video. It's mostly experimental with a bit of a lesson thrown in. The tin is GORGEOUS, just like the other one you made. I have some mica powders that I bought in 2018. I didn't think they were all that. (they are super cheap ones off Amazon). I only really knew one application for them - sprinkling them dry onto paper and spritzing with water. But after seeing you use the embossing ink and brush them on - wow! What a great idea! Will they actually emboss if you use a heat gun on them? Or is the embossing ink just a "glue" and embossing powders do the actual embossing? I think it's the embossing powders that cause the embossing to take effect. I saw someone in a video use acrylic paint then sprinkle embossing powered on and heated it up and it worked.
    I'll never make my own metallic watercolors. I have way too many to bother with making my own. I loved the ones that are in your half pans. There was one that looked like one of those scarab beetles!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can mix the mica powder with clear embossing powder and emboss that way but they won't on their own. They will stick to the embossing ink tho!

    I finally bought some gum arabic earlier this year to make watercolours. I had some old eye shadow palettes that I wanted to use. It was SO much fun!! One was a regular drug store brand name, regular pigment levels, and I also had two pots of highly pigmented loose powders. They all look fine, but the latter two are AMAZING - with colour-shifting properties, too. They were expensive eye shadows, so it wouldn't make sense to buy them for this purpose, but since I wasn't using them as eye shadows, this gives them a great new life.😁

    Hullo Lindsay, You made those paints so easily! I have made watercolors before and the mauling just wore me out! I guess that is the difference between the pearl powders and pigments! I do have several different brands of metallic paints even some older Finetek full pans. I have only used them for highlights and having a more solid color underneath to provide a good base for the glitter to shine through. I do enjoy that you show how different these powders can be used in so many different ways and in so many different projects too!

    I was SO excited to see the title of this video, but when I clicked the excitment went way down. Now this is absolutely NOTHING against you Lindsay. I love you and I'm still very excited to watch. The reason the excitement went down is because I have been trying for a very long time, to figure out how they make colour shifting pigments from scratch. So when I first saw the title, I though "Did she do it? Did someone FINALLY figure out how to make it without the pigment powder already being provided!?!?" And that was a nope lol. See I watch (and love) a LOT of watercolour paint making videos. Some of the channels I watch even make pigments from scratch, with pomegranite (sp) rhinds and different kinds of plants known for paint making, as well as chemistry based pigment mixtures! Even they haven't touched pearlescent/metallic let alone iridescent and further still, multi-chrome.
    So anyway, if you ever feel like digging into it, you have at the very least one subbie who will watch super excitedly. Lol. Now on to actually watching the actual video!

    This was the 5th video I watched today on how to make metallic chrome chameleon watercolors, and the only that actually showed how to make it.
    All the others just basically showed people mixing a liquid and some powder together, then milling it forever until it was placed into pans.
    No one was willing to give out the recipe.
    So I thank you very much for not only showing it, but by doing it.
    You also used premixed gum Arabic where the others used the powder.
    And no one swatched it afterwards...
    Whats the point of making it, if your not gonna show the swatch??
    We need to know if it turned out...
    This was a great video, thank you very much for sharing 😊

    I have mica powder that I purchased years ago. I mixed some with water in a spray bottle and just gave up on that project. Now I'm more curious than ever, why can't I use regular watercolor paint with my water mixed mica that is in a tiny spray bottle. (Sold on Amazon)I tried it and I got some really interesting results. I figured that watercolor already has binder in it and is meant to be diluted with water. It only takes a tiny bit of mica in a small bottle to make this. Please try this Lindsay. I used Daniel Smith paints to try it. I'm always wary of cheap watercolor paint because of the light fastness issue. My test turned out fantastic and bonus I can use the same colors as my painting only with a bit of bling that would work great for highlights. I used a scrap of Arches watercolor paper. I sprayed my mix on dried paint in my palette. I did NOT spray it in my pans first.

I have been looking at really expensive handmade color shift watercolor paint that is on Etsy but I am concerned about the colorfast rating, etc. I have purchased some of the duochrome and iridescent paints frorm DS but would like a bit more shine like wings on a butterfly or dragonfly or even dew on the tips of flowers. I guess I just need more practice with what I already own. Thanks for addressing my questions. Maybe some lessons on how to use these stunning paints? I can't find many videos on the actual applications so I am reaching out to you. If you have the time,....(yeah right!) LOL!!!! Just putting a bee in your bonnet.

    Question? Are all micas created equal, can you use any mica to make a watercolor?

    • @janemiettinen5176
      @janemiettinen5176 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes and no; mica is mica, but the better quality stuff is grounded way finer - usually the pricier it is, the finer it is. But you can most definitely make watercolors out of any old mica, it just might not be as impressive as more expensive product, like it is with any pigment. Hope I answered your question :)

      This is synthetic. Made in a factory. Most is now in fact as you can create color shifts and other special effects that natural mica doesn't do. You can always reach out to a manufacturer if you are unsure of the sourse of the mica.
