Albion were awarded a 3-0 win and the three points by The Football League.The decision was unanimous, and Nagle said "any other decision would be grossly unfair and set a precedent that would not be in the best interests of the game". United were fined £10,000 by The Football Association, Santos was given a six-match ban (four, plus two for violent conduct), Suffo paid a £3,000 fine and received a six-match ban (three for the dismissal, three for violent conduct), and Keith Curle was made to pay a fine of £500 and received a two-match ban, while Warnock was made to pay £300 for "improper conduct towards the fourth official".. .. .. . The referee bottled some decisions. Michael Brown should have had a second yellow which actually was worthy of a straight red, but just got a speaking to. Keith Curle should have had a straight red but was only given a yellow then later should have had a second yellow but only got a speaking to. The referee obviously bottled those decisions because he was mindful of the game being abandoned, which in the end it was
I think by that stage the ref had worked out Sheff Utd were trying to get 2 more sent off to abandon the match.

I have a book about famous red cards and this match is featured. It had 4 reasons why in hindsight a storm could have been predicted to happen in the match:
1: West Brom manager Gary Megson was a hero for Sheffield Wednesday
2: Neil Warnock was... Neil Warnock
3: Neither side had a playing style likely to top the fair play charts
4: The history of the Johnson/Santos incident
That said I don’t think they could have even predicted what actually happened

It felt like the ref was aware the match was going to end early and wanted to try and drag it on a little longer, even if it meant being hugely lenient. the tackle and putting the boot in was a clear red any day of the week.

Warnock was only fined GBP 300? I’d say a fine of GBP 50,000 would be more appropriate, plus a one-match touchline ban.

A year later Sheffield United played Liverpool at Anfield in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final. United led 2-1 from the first leg. In the Anfield game the Liverpool goalkeeper came out of the area and handled the ball, in the same way that Tracey did in the West Brom game. But the ref bottled it and did not send off the Liverpool goalkeeper. He just gave a yellow card. Tracey, for the same offence, was sent off.

No couple days after the game, the league confirmed the result still stood and Sheffield United were also fined 10,000 pounds or something like that and the 2 subs who got sent of got banned and fined and I think Keith curle was also fined
