Zakir is a child prodigy. He began at the age of three. He learned from his father, Usta’ad (Master) Alla Rakha, who accompanied the sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Remember your fine father mentioning him. He was four years my senior in college and his younger brothers,, Fazal Qureshi and Taufiq Ahmad, were my contemporaries. What they have done is to rescue the tabla from being an accompaniment to a solo instrument. You should check out his collaborations with western artists and drummers. Even accomplished string players.
And yet he is so humble that he always says in any workshops he teaches in that you have to remember the tabla is an accompaniment. Truly one of the greats.
Pls make a feature Friday on different Indian instruments doing face-offs (Jugalbandi) with each other in live environments. I love how he just pull his phone and google if he wanna know something that is not clear, unlike some youtubers who talk for another 10 minutes arguing whether or not Tabla is made of metal or leather and later ask viewers to write it in comments.
Efra, Just for easy understanding, Baiyaan simply means left ( played from the left hand ). Syahi means ink it is very thick viscous kind of glue ink that is heated and applied on the tabla . Dori means thread or string use to tighten or loosen the stretch on the skin of the tabla controls the volume.. if it is tight the sound is clean and sharp.
It's a story from his childhood. Zakir Hussain would tap out beats on any surface he happened to come upon be it the kitchen utensils or the table tops and furniture in the house. He total absorption with percussion resembles you.

Everything he is playing can be written in words.. I leaned tabla for 3 years.. my teacher used to write the run in our copy first then show us how to do the run. Then we had prectice it over and over again. As in English we have alphabet same way there are may alphabet, and each of them indicating a specific kind of sound and to get that sound we have to tap in different part of the tabla.

The palms sweat a lot when you play Tabala. As such , the player keeps smearing his fingers/plam with a powder .. that essentially helps the player keep the leather dry..!

There's no metal in those black spots in the middle of the tabla. "Siyahi" means ink. The ink is actually a bit raised so you can feel it on the surface of the skin of the tabla. The hammer is used to adjust the wooden bits through the strings around the instrument closer to its base to tune the sharpness of the sound. The tabla, right side, smaller drum, can be tuned, not the bayan (left, larger). You have to use slides with the bayan. Daya is right in Hindi, bayan (end with nasal sound as in French.)

Hello friends... Indian classical music or instrumental music is like an ocean and needs a lifetime dedication to learn and perform... You are addressing it from the surface without diving deep... For tabla and drums learn the language of music first and different parts give different units of the language.. then comes taal or different reathm compositions.. then comes speed variations.. please understand systematically... Similarly learn the details of grammar and composition and styles for indian vocal classical music... Explanations are available in internet... Best wishes...
