Threadless Headset Overhaul (Clean/Lube/Replace Bearings/Replace Crown Race)

  • The headset on this bike felt very rough as I turned the handlebars. So it needed to be overhauled. I opened it up, cleaned it, replaced the bearings. The crown race had some damage, so I replaced it. I greased everything up and put it back together. I thought about replacing the whole headset, but I may do that in another video.

    I appreciate that in this video, you worked with an old, rusty bike. I am in the process of resurrecting my own old rusty bike, and your video is more appropriate than those videos that use new, spotless bikes.

    Nice, clear, easy-to-understand video without annoying background music. Love it. I've got a 2012 Schwinn Paramount road bike that seems to have developed "indexed steering" or what some call "brinneling." So I'll be diving into it soon to have a look at the races to see if that is indeed the problem. Sheldon Brown's website says this is often due to lubricant breakdown. It's kind of interesting to me, considering this bike has about 7,000 miles on it, has never been ridden in the rain and has always been kept indoors. Yet my 1998 Specialized Hard Rock MTB (converted to touring) has about 35,000 miles on it, has been ridden for many thousands of miles with 50 pounds of gear loaded on it through every kind of weather condition from beautiful sunny days to brutal, torrential rain in hot, very humid conditions, yet has never needed any headset work other than some minor adjusting once. Of course that bike is built like a Sherman tank, so I guess that explains it. Anyway, thanks for the nice video.

      The bearings in headsets tend to ride in roughly the same place. Unlike hubs or BB's, steering just goes back and forth.

    This saved my day after I absentmindedly took apart a headset for the first time, not remembering the order of the parts, and then couldn't get it back together. Your videos have taught me more about bikes than any other online source or mechanical books.

    Very good--no long winded BS, voice clear as a bell, and care taken to indicate exactly what was going on--unlike many "instructional" clips that gloss over imporant points and waffle on about what's NOT important.
    Also good was the presenter did not carelessly block out what he was doing by obscuring the view with hands or other body parts. Kudos to the camera guy too!
    Thanks a bunch, RJ The Bike Guy.

    Very good video. If you have "indexed steering", i.e. dimpled damaged races, and can't find replacement parts, or if you're under pressure time wise, if you'll use free balls (the balls will no longer be spaced to simultaneously engage the dimples) your bearing will work like new! An old school fix.

    I like to put it on the ground at the end and tighten the headset cap bolt while it is on the ground. Using the front brake, while rocking back and forth, can give you a more realistic feel, for adjusting tightness, using gravity and weight, more than on the bike stand.

    Hi Thank you so much for making this video. Is it normal for most 1 x 1/8" fork steerer tube to be slightly wider at the bottom? my steer tube bore measures 28.575 mm, but it is 30 mm at the bottom. Is this normal? I have to install my crown race so I am not even sure whether 1.5mm extra width could crack or damage the crown race. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for posting this video. I will give it a try, and will do the oven heat trick as well.

    Hello, I've just started this fix and on dismantling the headset found both old bearings placed in the cups the other way around. I've tried new bearing cages greased thoroughly and tested installed both ways and how I found them seems the quietest/smoothest. Must they be placed as you have done in the video or is it ok to leave the new ones in opposite? Will any damage occur having them this way round, should they always be inserted flat race edge out without exception? Thanks for your help. Oh and headset is a Geforce YST corp if you have encountered one of those, thanks.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cranebeg There is going to be variation between different brands/models of headsets, or other bike parts for that matter. The basic design will usually be similar. I would stay with how they came out, unless they didn't work correctly.

  • @aaronlyndel7132
    @aaronlyndel7132 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just done this on my specialised hardrock and it seems the new bearing cages are binding when reassemble and tighten the cap nut. Everything is assembled correctly. Are my new bearings unsuitable? Just standard 1 1/8 bearing cages.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, I can't tell you without having worked on your bike. You may just not have them adjust correctly. Or you have installed them incorrectly. Or maybe they are the wrong cages. I don't know.
