    I never would've thought to put a downdraft table under the work bench like that. What a great idea! I'm totally stealing that.

    Perfect height for a chair. Nothing worse than breaking your feet on the concrete floor while standing in one position doing something monotonous. Good stuff.

    Super! I have cubbies in my miter saw table and was going to put drawers in all of them, now one will get a similar suction box! Thanks for sharing the idea.

    I just picked up a new workbench that has four drawers. I'm going to use this idea to convert one of the top drawers into a downdraft box. Great project and thanks for the idea.

    Love the idea of making the downdraft surface a drawer. I’m about to build one and was a little concerned about floor space, this solves my problem. Thanks for the video and the great idea!

    Fantastic presentation -- you skipped the non-essential stuff, showing just what we needed to know, you sped up that which we didn't need to watch in normal time; you did not overtalk any of it, kept your presentation to just the essentials. Plugging in the shop vac is better than hard wiring it to a vacume system, even if you have one. I really appreciate your effort and your time to make it a very effective presentation. Plus it's a great idea, well executed. Thank you.

    Funny enough I was research outfeed tables and it brought me to you. I've been wanting to make one of these for awhile now. I have a small shop, its only 10'x16' and I have more tools than I use,lol, so there's no room for a dedicated downdraft table. I like your idea of mounting it under the work surface, very clever!! My only other option was to hang it on a wall. Thanks for the idea!

    Excellent job! This presentation is edited in addition to your being well-spoken. Some videos (by other producers) lose my interest quickly by bombarding me with their loud music (I like my own music), OR THE SOUND OF SHOP MACHINES RUNNING. Sometimes they simply bore me with Uh UH UH, and finally get half a sentence out. You Mr. WV DIYer have an excellent idea of what needs to be in and what should be edited out. Good Job!

    Hi, I love this idea. I use a dremmel to make models, & use the wooden clamp on my workbenche to hold the wood. There's a drawer under the clamp, but its needed for storage. Would the extractor work if I pulled the workbench drawer out, & rested the extractor on the drawer, underneath the clamp? Alternatively, could the extractor be adapted with the addition of a small clamp? That would be my preference.
    I'm not a joiner, just an amateur hobbyist, so no idea here 🙃.
    Thanks

    Just a thought. If you put a diagonal board from the back top to the front bottom it it will help suction plus the vibration from sanding moves it to the front on the box.

      @WVDIYGUY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea!

  • @davidjohnson403
    @davidjohnson403 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good thought about putting the downdraft table on drawer slides. Because you didn't slope the bottom, the box will trap the dust in the back and corners. Also, I wouldn't have glued on the top, because you can't open it and clean out the box.

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are good points. I don't mean to come across as a jerk here, so don't take it that way. I'm genuinely curious. It's there a reason that it would matter if there was dust inside the box? My thought is that as long as it's sucking it out of the air, and through the holes in the table top, I really don't care where it's going. Just my opinion.

    • @davidjohnson403
      @davidjohnson403 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I have found, dust flows over smooth surfaces easier. I have a similar problem in my Powermatic Table Saw. The dust piles up on the sides, and the amount of suction at the blade drops. When I clean out the base, suction is restored. I keep trying to install sloped surfaces, wherever the dust collects and each time, the suction at the blade improves. I believe it has something to do with Laminar flow, but I haven't tried to model the interior or do any calculations. My experience is anecdotal observation only.

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see.. So far I haven't experienced that, but if I develop any problems with my set up, I'll try out your thoughts on version 2.0.

    Cool storage idea attaching it to draw slides. There is no need to glie the peg bpard.
    What are those huge louvered board setup assembly contraption located against the wall behind the miter saw?

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Those are some widow shutters I made. It was a quick easy project. Used the band saw to re-saw a 2x4 into 7 thin pieces. Then book matched the pieces in the right order, and used brads and glue to attach them to a small rectangle frame. I then got a piece of black steel tubing and large metal cable ties of the same diameter and attached the shutters to the tubing and the tubing to the wall. So they slide out of the way (barn door style-ish haha) a little more substantial than some mini blinds for the shop.

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a 16 gallon, 6.5hp Ridgid from home Depot. If I remember right the CFM is around 150-160. Not much compared to the system I use now. My new system is well over 1,000. If you're deciding on a dust collection system, I highly suggest going big from the start.

  • @cgriesemer
    @cgriesemer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm curious what you did to help secure the shop vac nozzle to the hole

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +cgriesemer The end of the nozzle is about 2" long, so just it's weight pulling down on the front holds it inside the hole with friction. It is not permanently mounted, so I can still move the shop vac around the shop for other jobs. I haven't had any problems with it trying to back out on me while I was using it. Thanks for watching!

  • @gpdory

    The peg board normally comes with 1/4 holes, do you feel the need to make them any larger ? Just curious

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my opinion, the smaller holes improve the suction when using a shop vac. If they were much bigger, I think the functionality would suffer. If you fitted a dust collection fitting to the bottom and used a 4" hose with good suction, I'm sure you could go with bigger holes.

    I’ve always wanted to build one of these but don’t want to build one then have to take it apart because it does not do much. Now that you’ve had it for a while what’s your updated view on its usefulness.

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It works great. If i was doing it again, i don't think I'd glue on the peg board, because I've heard dust buildup inside could cause an airflow problem. I haven't had any issues with dust building up so far, so it's up to you. Other than that change, it's been great!

    So now that it's been a few years since the build do you still like the down draft from that project? I have a workbench that that has a slide out table for a miter saw but I don't use it and I could really use something like this project for my small sanding projects. Would like to know if you made changes or found that it needed other tweaks to make it work better. Thanks, I'll check out your channel for other stuff too.

    • @WVDIYGUY

      The only thing I've done is cut a piece of poster board (heavy paper) to cover the holes in the area I'm not using. It improves the suction in the area i am using. Hopefully that makes sense. Other than that, it works great. I'm very happy with it.

    Hi nice project. Question I have is...Did you build it big enough? Or for that matter too big? Now that you have used for awhile, are you happy with size ? And have you had any areas inside the box that is not cleaning out well. I am starting my wood shop , and will incorporate this into my assembly table or out feed table that I am researching on TH-cam. So ty for the GREAT simple solution

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say it depends on the types of projects you plan to use it for.. it's worked well for me. I put a piece of posterboard over the back half to seal off the air flow if I'm just working on a small piece. Good luck with your shop!

      WV DIY GUY yes my plan is to ad this to my out feed table I will build soon . But I’m questioning my plan of building it on the top of bench . I might just do EXACTLY what you did. But will build table accordingly so I don’t have to ad supports (2x6) like you had to in order to accommodate the drawer slides .

    • @WVDIYGUY

    I wish I had seen this a few months ago. I bought I downdraft sanding table at Peachtree Woodworking, only find out that will not work with a shop vac. It needs a much great volume of air that an air handler will provide. Any solutions that you know of? They say it needs 650 cfm

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest a full dust collector for that. You can spend a lot of money on a dust collector, but I opted for a harbor freight 2hp. It has worked fine for me for not much money if you wait for a 25% coupon (holidays). For the money, I can't complain about it's performance. Good luck!

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Lucas, I agree with you. I don't like the way it looks either.. I actually use my underwater dive camera to shoot the video. It is a 1080 camera and when I edit the video, it looks bright, clear, and there are no black borders. Then when I publish to TH-cam it gets dark, blurry, and adds the borders. I have no idea what causes the change. If you have any suggestions or insight into why this happens, I'd love to know so that I can fix it! Thanks!

      WV DIY GUY, I’m ‘only’ 5’7” and my motto is still the same! This is an AWESOME idea that I’m ‘borrowing’ for my new/rebuilt shop and I agree with you on the drawer slide weight ratings as well. I dont think theres enough leverage with the length fully pulled out even if you did happen to put something heavier on it but as I’m building small ‘craft fair/christmasy’ items, never EVER a worry for that!
