As I say, because it's an aggregate, I wasn't too worried as I'd seen over time that I wouldn't fail, but I'm still super happy with how I did! Something I'd like to make a video on is how I changed my relationship to grades in first year. Sure, it's nice to know I understand the content. But I don't feel like my sense of self worth is attached to them in the same way it was at school.

UnJaded Jade I’ve just been set a load of extra work so not thriving but we shall get there x
This ~kinda~ vibes like the UK grading system to me -
1/5 - 20%, you really didn't get it
2/5 - 40% (passing grade in UK) - you understood the fundamental concepts, but may not be great at applying them and don't have a very in depth knowledge
3/5 - 60% well done! You got a 2:1, you're doing well
4/5 - 80%, that's well into a first! You've clearly very well understood the course and are doing really well
5/5 - 100% perfect score, very very very difficult to achieve (and also requires publishable level work at a lot of unis)
This is SUCH a useful way to think of it, thanks for sharing :)
Honestly, it really sounds like Polish school grading system 😂
We get maked on the scale of 1-6 with a +/- system where + is a half grade up and - is either 0.25 of 0.5 grade down (depending on the school etc. but you can't get a 1- or a 6+, sometimes 1-5.5 depending on the school again, 6 is very rare anyway and given exceptionally) with 1 being failing grade, 2 technically passing but not really. 3 is ok, as in you have a basic understanding of the concept. You get a 4 when you do well, 5 is very well and 6 is exceptional work.
Similar system is implemented in university, but the scale is 2-5 (with 5.5 being very rare and not present in all universities), where 3 is a passing grade.
Yeah kind of does to me too. My lecturers always said they’d never give more than 80% because it would have to be publishable. But then I guess all unis grade differently
A 3 doesn't sound all that good tbh...
Actually at a lot of UK universities, professors specify that you won't get above 80% unless your work is publishable and first years will never get above 80% period. 100% is literally impossible for the vast majority of subjects lol

The first time I was this early Jade was still inn her gap year.
God, I wish my uni didn't have exams and just constant essays/projects
It's a lot easier to achieve higher grades that way because you can mess up once or twice and still have plenty or opportunities for a good grade - but if you mess up your exam, you're screwed
plus, essays/projects are more than just learning stuff by heart - you actually need to think, which I love
I was just about to say that. Getting assignments done is not hard. But assignments (that you have to pass but don't get any credit for) And midterms and finals is just way harder.
Most USA universities use both methods! My breakdown for each class is roughly 20% of my grade from the final exam, 15% is the midterm and 65% (or the rest of my grade) is based off of tons of assignments which includes about 3-5 tests (not including the final or midterm)! The percentages change slightly depending on the class because they can decide their own percentage breakdowns but the amount of work for each class changes depending on how rigorous the class is! So my engineering courses require more work and time devoted to it (about 10-25 hrs per week per class & we take around 4 or 5 at one time)than lower level classes and therefore are weighted more in my total GPA! I would say it's more difficult than having just one or the other because while we study for our finals/midterms, we're also putting in the same amount of time towards our normal assignments and tests. We're often learning new material while we study for tests :/ Hope this makes sense :)
@@MargieLeigh3 That makes more sense! I also study engineering and in my country your grade is about 90% final, 10% midterm and then we have assignments. (We have assignments so they could let us take the final.)

I binge watched all your gap year and uni vlogs during quarantine and it's INCREDIBLE to see how much you have grown over time and how well you are doing. @@nicksturnlvr it's most likely a 24-hour period to complete an exam on Blackboard or something similar, usually takes 60-90 minutes to complete.

I couldn't watch this yesterday and I completely forgot to watch it today, but I had a really bad mental breakdown bc of all the stress due to exams and I was just scrolling through yt and re-found this video! I feel you Jade 🥺 In High School in Sweden we don’t have finals either, we have tests and assignments and stuff and we have these requirements that we have to fulfill in different aspects to get the grade we want, and you have to constantly get A’s on all your stuff to get an A on the course, for example! So I know the drill, but well done on your first year at Minerva! ✨
As an American who just graduated from uni (I did a semester abroad in the UK in 2018 too) it's so funny to see your reaction to the GPA/aggregate system. Like it's what I'm used to my entire life, and then when I went to school in the UK I wasn't used to how light the work load felt lol.
which uni in the uk did you go to? i go to uni in london and wish my workload was light lol, barely have time to sleep ;.;
@@maneskinnnnn7190 i went to sussex while i was there. i wouldnt say it was 100% a pushover, we still had work, but it was spread out differently than in american uni's. i was used to doing work the entire class but then they were like "hey you only have a midterm and a final" it was weird haha
@@aabatteryful It really depends on your course but I feel like the UK in general is more exam based. Of course, for English and such students will usually have a few essays per week but I did physics and all my higher level courses were just one exam at the end of the year (lower level we had problem sheets every week and midterms as well). This is great to lower the stress during term but the pressure of doing one exam to determine your whole grade is intense. Term was mostly chill but then I'd be the most stressed I'd ever been on the lead up to exam season. I also think that a lot of US students have more styles they have to master because they're forced to take classes outside of their major. So somebody into the sciences will also have to learn how to write good essays which takes a lot of time. Over here you just focus on one subject.

I love this grading system, makes complete sense that the highest possible grade isn’t really achievable, because you’re never going to get complacent with education, always trying to improve
