    "Sounded like a tractor"
    "Ran like a Swiss Watch"
    My first 240 was a 400.00 dollar 87 DL with over 600 thousand miles on the clock.
    Drove it five years.
    The only time I popped the hood. Was to jump another car.
    Don't think I even changed the oil.
    Just added.

    Nice to hear the Irish accent. I'm Irish & own a 2x 240GL Wagons here in Melbourne. It ticks all the boxes for me and has lots of character. Got it dirt cheap but they seem to be worth a bit of money to now.
    P.s: The slope on the rear doors is due to Volvo using the same doors that come on the 244 sedan

    Hugely useful cargo area. Among other things it could fit a single bed mattress, and a 14.5 cu ft chest freezer (had to take the door off). Completely flat cargo floor.

    I am just as happy with my 1990 745 turbo Intercooler Estate.
    588.000 km and counting (app 365.000 miles).
    They are great cars, the 140, 240, the 740 and the 940 series (especially the estates in my opnion).
    Later Volvos are front-wheel drive and lack the tight turning circle.
    Rear-wheel drive Volvos turn on the envelope, the front-wheel drive need a different zip code.

    I remember the 240 wagons back in the days when I was a kid. I clearly remember I was thinking how old, ugly & outdated they seemed even then. But now I am excited about them cause I do understand how cars used to be so simple & functional. Engineering & ingenuity was what excited people. Many times, I wonder how did we lose that and ended up with computers that also function as cars, are bigger on the outside but have a way smaller cabin... Whenever I drive a modern car I realize how our family's old trusty Alfa Romeo 164, and my (modern compared to the 240s) w210 FL are so big and spacious that you just love to have & drive them. Love your work guys!

    The two belts?
    Because it also drives the steering pump, and it is almost impossible to turn the wheel if the pump is not running. ( Try it with the engine off!)
    And that thing will tow a caravan up the side of a farm house with no problems.....

    1:00 They share so damn many parts that you can update any model year of either with the '91+ improved front/rear windscreens that don't require that seepy, oozy butyl tape shit that gets all over everything after a decade.
    Also, that weird little cup shaped washer on the right at 7:05 is to prevent that stud from puncturing the gas tank in the event of a rear end collision.
    Also, lovely cloth headrest pads! I've only ever seen vinyl ones! (Those are an OEM addon)
    Currently overhauling a poor '88 that's got a lot of deferred maintenance before going on a 3k mile (smidge short of 5k in non-hick units) road trip across the continent.

    Why a V6 you asked? Well in those days Volvo had co-engineered a V8! Together with Peugeot and Renault... It was called the PRV...
    It was 4 litres. Then the oil crisis of 73 kicked in and it was decided to hack off 2 cylinders... a 2.7 PRV was born with a 90 degree angle. They had it on the shelf and that is why they changed it. The old inline b300 was nothing more than an extended b200 and was a bit long in the tooth.
    However it wasn't the best engine... actually it was a misfiring V8 without 2 cylinders. It had some moments of fame when DeLorean featured this engine as well. Last time seen? Volvo 760, 2 versions, the upgraded last one was the best... and in a Xantia. Somewhere in the early 2000's. Volvo exchanged the PRV for the Whiteblock 6 I line, wich was a marvelous engine... bittersweet, but of you press it hard, it becomes a beast! And it sounds amazing!

  • @mayflowerlash11
    @mayflowerlash11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The V6 in the 260 was shared with Renault or Peugeot and a third marque. It was an attempt to cut development costs. I have read that it was not a great improvement over the red block.
    It was not a great improvement in power and corrosion in the engine block (alloy) would create pinhole leaks that were too expensive to repair. The straight sixes before and after the V6 were better engines.

    • @mayflowerlash11
      @mayflowerlash11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I refer to @fretlessfender for a better explanation of why the V6 was used.

    Bought a new 244 in 1980, boy I copped heaps of shit from my "young mates" at the time however I loved that car, it was built from metal not tin foil like a lot of cars which started to put economy before safety,, when you closed car door you knew it would protect you should you be in a bad car accident and those huge bumpers actually protected your car from damage even if they looked unsightly they did their job "bumper bars were designed for originally which is to protect car not be a fashion statement
