Peugeot likely had no idea in 1969 that their new midsize family saloon would have such an impact on the world. This is the story of the 504, a car that was truly global, and brought internal combustion to remote areas of the planet ahead of the likes of Jeep, Land Rover, or even the Land Cruiser.

One of the Most Dangerous Jobs of the 1980s
มุมมอง 380Kวันที่ผ่านมา
During the 1970s, getting newspapers across Europe on time was big business - vans were simply not fast enough. Pierre Tissier built a series of custom six wheel citroens which were capable of doing the job, but that was just the start of it...

In the 1950s the BBC had a problem; people couldn't get a clear view of the horses at the Grand National. The solution was a series of mobile cameras based on trucks and Citroen cars, such as the DS, CX, and XM, as well as the Volvo V70 and Land Rover Discovery. This is the story of the BBC's Outside Broadcast Roving Eyes

Great car it was!, My dad has it in mid 70’s & it really was bullet prove and a no none sense great car!
Fantastic video. I love automotive esoterica and I never knew any of these existed!
my dad still have 2 of those pickups heare in são paulo, brazil.... great car, terrrible owner. lot of chilhood memories in that truck, id like to restore one of them
As dangerous as I know these were, the idea of a dude getting fed up and just fixing an issue is so nice
Is this the same vehicle Clarkson used on TG to make that 3-story loft on wheel? I can't clearly remember after almost 15 years!!! Geezus?!
I am dutch, normally english is no problem for me,but this accent almost makes it impossible for me😢
Ireland not the place for you then I’m afraid!
That two door 504 is beautiful. Looks like an aston marton of that era.
What is a "Kill-ommeter"? Is it a measurement of kills? There is NO SUCH THING as a Mill-immiter, a Cent-immiter, or a "Kill-ommeter". Try saying millimetre, centimetre, and KILO-metre. You are talking about fractions of metres, or multiples of metres. That's METRES. Not immiters or ommeters. The word is KILO-metre. Say it. KILO-metre.
But you understood what I was saying just the same? Doubleplusgood!
really appreciate the unique style of this video, love when people with taste are the ones talking about stylish things
That's very kind of you to say, thank you!
Congratulations for your very good video and especially for the musical choices that you made from the original Bladerunner soundtrack! Vangelis music made your video so different from other car videos, with an atmosphere so profound... A petrolhead philosopher from Greece 🚙🏛
This is a brilliant video, well done!
Thanks mate, love your channel too!

Greetings from the U.K! I just started watching your channel, and I love the geekiness and the touch of Irish humour in your videos! I'm guessing the Ad campaign was being ironic, in showing you can put 'Golf' clubs in the boot, but you can't get them out! It's a Golf after all! 😂
Thanks so much! 😇 And yeah, you nailed it 🤣
@427Motorsports I know the Germans have a dry sense of humour but never thought they could be so ironic!
Rodimus prime
was born way too late cars nowadays just look like turds.
Quick question? Did you use any filter or web for the first image ( 0:00 )? It looks cool and i'd love it if i could make my images look like that
What I do for that and also the thumbnails is take them into Photoshop, scale up the original image to fit the size I need, then go around it with the polygonal lasso and the colour picker and a heavy opaque brush and just block in the right colours - it can end up being very detailed if you start with a high res, so you can choose how you want it to come out that way
@@427Motorsports I'll attempt it thanks
Truly the toughest cars ever built. As they aged they only went slower, but never left you stranded by the roadside. The engines could be overhauled over a weekend, and then driven for another hundred years.
Drove from London to Nairobi in the 80s across the desert and through the Congo in a County 110. 504s were everywhere. Brilliant, brilliant cars!!
Two Arctic white 190E Mercs were my daily drivers until they were heavily vandalized in two related hate crime incidences. I was quite fond of them and they were in great condition. While the person was apprehended after the second incident and sent to a state prison, I was not compensated for the damages and ended up selling both Mercs for salvage. (The nutter who did this was eventually released, only to return to the scene of his original crime, setting a fire to a building in the process. This time, he was tried in a federal court and sentenced to 191 months, which is almost 16 years). Sorry if I got a bit sidetracked...
Jeep Cherokee used to be a Renault, too.
Why don't Peugeot build cars like the 504 today they aren't the best cars but the 504 was a fantastic car and still today as taxis in Africa also the ute l bet they went down very well in South Africa
Conquered the Landcruiser?😂 bullshit it did
Had a transformer as a kid that looked exactly like that
As I often say, it just needs a little TLC...time, luck, and cash.😊
Your videos are class lads 👍🏻
Funny opinions on Citroën. Citroën SM won the 71 Rallye Du Maroc, 26 mins ahead of second placed car...a... erm... Peugeot 504. Mercedes weren't even on the leader board. My parents were antique dealers through the 70s and 80s, the dealer choice was usually Peugeot, my dad clubbed together dealers and ordered 11 Peugeot 504 estates in one go for a sizeable discount, they arrived on the same day, all lined up with their various optioned roof racks. Dealers would hammer Peugeots across the UK and the continent on buying trips, 50k miles a year, after two years they went off to Africa.
I daily drive a series 1 CX diesel - I only meant in the video that Citroen were making something finer than Peugeot which was more simplistic maybe - that's maybe not the right word either!
What a batshit crazy job. I'm surprised they were able to operate without anybody cracking down on them when a whole industry springs up to make the custom vehicles you need to haul 2 tons of cargo down the highway at 120mph, day in and day out. Must have made for a very dull life for the drivers once the business did close all those years later.
Nothing can beat japanese Automotive.
I have the sports car version of the LS: the SC 430. It uses many of the LS components, including the silky 4.3 lt engine. It is superb and despite being 22years old, everything works as it should. Although I have no experience of other Lexus models, I think that Lexus probably makes the best cars in the world.
Thanks Tom
"naturally asphyxiated"🤣😉
Digging your scale model builds!😎
These things give me Mad Max-vibes...
My uncle did this job in the mid 80s in Stockholm, Sweden.
they sold a load of these in south africa as i was growing up - we even built them in SA - my uncle (oom )willie had one - tough and could withstand the heat and dust - absolute beast
Terrific video, guys! Engaging and informative! I really appreciate the period footage and background music. Keep up the great work!
my dad had 2 and my second car was 504 station wagon - indestructable
Sophia Loren eyes, awesome!
Cars became boring post 1985; to drive and to look at
Been a Toyota fan boy for very good reasons l would buy a Lexus and in Australia were l live older Lexuses and Toyota's appreciate and as they say Lexus took on the Germans and won and there are many more Lexuses on the road then Mercedes-Benz BMW and any other European luxury brand in Australia because there are more Toyota's sold then any other vehicle brand also there is a Lexus LS400 in tge USA that has done over 1000000 miles still with its original engine watched a series of restoration videos on it mainly body work and interior cleaning and all the restorer did to the engine was a compression test and the engine is very healthy
Also called the poor man's Mercedes and I basically inhereted a 504 station wagons from my late father and it handled unpaved roads with ease
Today, I'm a 911 GT3/ BNR32 Skyline owner - but I've had the pleasure to own a mint UCF11 F-Package Celsior - the JDM equivalent to the LS400. I've also owned many W124 series Mercs - a car I loved, widely considered to be the zenith of Mercedes engineering - but being unbiased - what I can say is that the Celsior was miles ahead of the W124s of the day. The shock absorbing TEMS system, the air suspension, the seats, the massages, the build quality, the paint - everything was so well engineered. At half the price of an S-Class. From the 2nd gen LS you can see the cost cuts; but I think the 1st gen is king. It's like BYD and EVs today. An absolute leap in tech/quality/price.
From the moment you said BNR32 Skyline owner I immediately agreed with everything you had to say!
The propaganda must be delivered swiftly !!
This is only in the US. In the UK, EU and the gulf Lexus has never challenged the Germans.
In the video I say "Which explans why we never really got them here", and I open with "in the US Market". They didn't even allocate many to be built for here, never mind sold, haha. Cheers for the comment!
Peugeot had a poor reputation here in Canada for reliability, but I noticed in the old films of the Red X trials around Australia, Peugeot 403 took an incredible battering and always were highly placed.
3:07 Originally Alexis, proposed by marketing company Lippincott & Marguilies. Later abbreviated Lexus to shorten the name.
0:32 “voluntary export restraint”. The Japanese pivot to US specific luxury marks started in 1981 due to an export quota agreed to by the Japanese government at the request of Washington. In order to make up for the sudden decrease in volume, Japanese manufacturers pivoted to higher margin luxury cars. This is why Lexus was launched in the US in 1987, while launching in homeland Japan in 1998.
What a beautiful video! Thanks!!
Hi Tomo, just working my way through the bac catalogue. The popularity of diesel in NI is interesting, might be an interesting video in itself. Personally i like diesel because i can 'borrow it' out my works van, i wonder if its popular over there due to the rural agricultural economy, so could be filled from the farms fuel bund, or similarly with the abundance of oil heating they could be ran off that anowl. Thinking of it im sure i had my poojoes tank dipped by the psni one of the times i was working over there
I think that's likely something Conor will cover in the future - it's a topic that definitely garners interest, and we've got enough diesels to do it justice! Enjoy the back catalogue ;)
