    Sledge, you've been spoilt living in Berlin. Welcome back to good 'ol Blighty. The roads are just as bad as ever (that's one reason I own an XC90). There's a couple of sections of the M1 between junction 42 and where it merges with the A1 that are like that at 21:30 It feels as if you've got a flat tyre. I had to go that way yesterday when I brought the caravan back home. Is your good lady gonna be joining you later on?

    I sold a 1987 240 here on the Canadian Westcoast for $250.00 advertising that buyer could drive it home.Someone from Canadian eastcoast bought it sight unseen and bought his wife out here to show her the country and drive it home.They had a new timing belt installed because I did not know how much milage was on the old one.They drove it home over 3000 miles across Canada !

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had a non lockable one on the 740 and the other day I noticed the smell of petrol around the car, went to the gas cap and found it half on, I always do it up tight so I suspect someone tried to take the fuel! Got a lockable one for it now 😅

      @@Involvod I cleaned out my tank, replaced the rusted fuel pick unit, I found rust, a failed fuel sock and what looked like ATF under the stale gasoline in my Dad's '92 740. Also replaced the mid body fuel pump (sounded jammed, probably with rust flakes inside) and she still won't start. Next have to overhaul the injectors with a kit I got from ebay. I had a setback the last 6 months and had to stop working on it due to a an injury (broken arm and neck injury). I hope to get back to it soon. Your videos help inspire me!!! On another note, I can tell you as someone who lived in Switzerlandf for 10 years, have family there, citizenship and spoke the language fluently (with a flat accent), the first 7 years were great, I trained and modernized several people in the technical side of my profession. I was a technician to the local creative craftsmen in my field. The last 3 were miserable, when I moved up from technician to the role of the creative craftsman, completing with more of the established locals for a better paying job. I had to put up with a lot of BS. Getting home to the USA was the best decision I could've made. Glad you found a solution and I hope it works for Miss Involv'd too. Working as a foreigner in, even with all the papers & language, can be a lesson in futility, in some countries. In both my week-long visits to Berlin, it seemed like a great place to visit, but, even my German born German language teacher left Berlin after 10 years b/c making a living there was so difficult (1995-2005). He took us there on a long weekend, privately (not part of the classes at the Klubschule) his friends there were driving taxis and giving tours, becasue they could find not work in the field they were trained in. I hope it's better now. I enjoyed your garage by the tram turn around and all your hard work with hand tools & simple solutions, similar to what I have in my driveway. Good luck back in the UK!

    Welcome to the UK!
    I took a 245 about 700 miles a few years ago down the west coast of the US, then the same distance back. It made it OK in the end but the trip was a lot more eventful. Lost all 4 of my belts near the California border and had to change them in a gas station lot at midnight. :( Then on the way down the mountain my rear muffler broke loose and everything got much louder. At least wired it to the bumper so it didn't bang around so much.
    Then finally on the way home my O.D fuse kept blowing (found some rotted wiring later) so I spent a lot of time in 3rd on the interstate. Burned a quart of oil all told doing that I think. Overall was very glad I had some spares and tools in the 3rd row compartment. Probably would be a bit nicer in my current car since it's in better mechanical shape.
    As far as roads go, the UK road you found is about as bad as some of the ones in Oregon. They are much nicer in Washington or California, I think it's a question of budget honestly... You can tell which state you're in by how much your car is rattling.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shame you didn't have a camera rolling that would have been a much more eventful video than mine 😀 And that's a good point, it's amazing how things can change when you cross over the line

    • @Khrrck
      @Khrrck 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Involvod Haha. All the interesting stuff happened at night of course so the footage would have sucked. Was quite something seeing all the dash lights coming on and the temp gauge spiking when both the alternator belts blew at once though. Either bits of shredded belt did in everything else or something bounced up off the road and somehow wrecked the whole mess.
      Definitely recommend having spares on hand if you're going far from home though. Was really glad I had put the old belts in the back when I replaced them rather than throwing them out.

    In April '14 I took my '90 740 GL out of storage after 7 years. It had been put away 'wet' but in excellent condition. I was moving so I had to drive it to my new home. I had less than a week to get it ready for the 3,900km trip. (Canada's a big country!) Basically, all I did was change the oil and filter and double check all the other fluids. (Pretty much everything had been done prior to it being stored and I didn't have a lot of time to do much more.) I had an exhaust leak between the catalytic converter pipe and the 'Y' pipe ahead of it. So, I replaced the gasket at the joint there with an aftermarket 'Made in India' gasket. I made a few short trips around where I lived to wring it out and see if everything was ready to go. It was.
    I drove the 3,900kms in 74 hours. The only thing that gave me any trouble was the 'Made in India' gasket that blew out about 2 hours into the trip. (I think it was made of Indian cotton! lol) It gave the car a heck of an exhaust leak and threw out the readings of the oxygen sensor which affected the gas mileage and drivability. But nothing that wasn't surmountable. I picked up a new steel gasket at an auto parts store in Saskatoon but wasn't able to replace it until I arrived at my destination. So, I just put up with the noise and lousy gas mileage.
    Anyway, that shows you what these 240, 740 and 940 Volvos are capable of - even after 7 years of storage! 'Volvo: A Car You Can Believe In'!

    Funny you should mention about the positioning on the road when you are in UK. I learned that the hard way with my right hand drive LDV Convoy. I had used the van in 2010/11 to move my stuff from UK to Hungary but then I got a small left hand drive car when the Convoy MoT ran out. A couple of years later I was trying to get the Convoy registered in Hungary but needed to take it to a mechanic about 90 miles away. On the way there I must have been driving too close to the oncoming traffic because my passenger mirror hit the mirror of an oncoming truck (who didn't even stop). This also smashed the door glass.

    I see no reason to doubt her ability, especially in three sections. At 200,000 miles she is nicely run in. Wish I could post a picture of Arthur, my 1990 DL Estate. Ma bought him new, so his entire history is with us. All 32 years and nearly 400,000 miles. I would not think twice about his ability to travel 800 miles in a single trip. After all, that's only about a tank and a half of fuel at the very most. Before I changed jobs there were many weeks I did 1,000 miles without even considering whether we would make it or not. Now I will watch the video. I see no reason why a 240 should leak oil. The 2.3 litre in my 90 DL Estate has exactly the same amount of oil come out as went in at the previous change. It is even a good colour!
    great to see the old girl made it with no problems. fantastic. These cars are meant for the open road. One day I would love to do a driving holiday all through Europe and Great Britain in my old boy. That road around London looks dead easy. I grew up with Ontario Highway 401. Up to 16 lanes in 4 carriageways, 2 in each direction, across the top of Toronto. 2,000,000 vehicles a day use that road. Lots of fun, and the Volvo 240 is the best car for the job. The visibility out is a big factor in the passive safety of the car.

Otherwise, those GLTs are usually low mileage and sometimes come equipped with the slightly more powerful engine. Currently there is one GLT available in Belgium with leather interior 135 instead of 116 horsepower and less than 300.000 km on the odometer for €9000. If someone could haggle in French and was willing to spend a bit more, that would be a good choice, I think. 😊
