How Hush Puppies Shoes Sparked A Water Crisis

  • Wolverine Worldwide is home to brands like Chaco, Sperry, Merrell and Hush Puppies. It's also a $2.4 billion global corporation and a point of contention in its hometown. For years, the shoemaker bought 3M Scotchgard coating to waterproof its Hush Puppies shoes. That coating contained a chemical compound called PFAS, which scientists now know can be toxic. Wolverine's tannery waste leached those toxic chemicals in the ground for years, contaminating residents drinking water and the local river.

    This is one aspect of manufacturing people don't think about. A lot of people want to bring back manufacturing jobs. But how do you deal with the environmental impact? And this is one of the reasons the US cannot compete with China for low-cost manufacturing: The environmental standards are higher in the US. In China, this type of dumping happens every day, but the government controls everything, so individuals cannot sue, making it easy for manufacturers to cut costs.

    • @Skullking489
      @Skullking489 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Yeah, one major benefit of exporting all our manufacturing to China is that we are also exporting all of the environmental damage that is associated with these industries. The Chinese have absolutely destroyed their country on the altar of progress. The only reason we don't hear about is because of how secretive they are about their country (It's illegal to even make accurate maps in China).

    • @amarahc4351

      such a sociopathic statement “harming others is better then harming ourselves” we have been able to beat leather to make it soft and usable since the beginning of time, the need for chemicals is about being lazy. our want for cheaper products is lazy, people in third world counties work for days to make a pair of shoes for themselves but if your on government assistance you can get a pair in a month. that’s a kinda privilage we will never be able to comprehend

    • @eudofia
      @eudofia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@amarahc4351 I don't know if you are responding to me or to Anthony Herrera. I was pointing out the fact that manufacturing has a major impact on the environment, and raising the standards in the US has contributed to making most manufacturing move to China, where the standards are lower. I think Anthony has more or less agreed to my assertions.
      You brought up the issue of people being on government assistance, which I ask: Is that relevant to the topic at hand? Please explain.

    • @Skullking489
      @Skullking489 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@amarahc4351 Near the end of the last century the American people decided they were unwilling to pay the heavy environmental and human costs associated with cheap goods. So they exported it overseas, mostly to China where the government was eager to sacrifice their people for explosive economic progress. The American people benefited, the Chinese Communist party benefited, and as a result of this arrangement, the Chinese people now suffer choking air, and toxic lands. I was not advocating for this morally evil arrangement in my earlier statement. But there is no doubt that all Americans, including myself, have benefited from the Chinese people paying this heavy toll.

    • @amarahc4351
      @amarahc4351 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Anthony Herrera your first sentence was “one major benefit....” continuing about exporting environmental damaging processes. phrasing it as a positive for you is outright saying “it’s better to hurt others then ourselves”, ethically you don’t get to acknowledge putting hardship onto others as taking it off yourself

  • @juanpasala
    @juanpasala 5 ปีที่แล้ว +281

    Well, after seeing the whole news I have a question. Why are they talking about wolverine, hush puppies and tanneries, and they are not talking about 3M, which was the developer, producer, seller and distributor about the chemical?

    • @supremechow3107
      @supremechow3107 5 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Juan Pablo Salazar most likely because 3M is only the producer not the ones who actually dump it it’s like guns you blame the users not the creators

    • @juanpasala
      @juanpasala 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Well, at the time they did dump the product it is highly plausible they did it in a way that was deemed legal at the time. And also, they were not aware of the efects the product had on people’s health, as the only effect they were looking for was waterproofing the shoes so customers feet wouldn’t get wet. Similar stories are happening all over the world with products such as asbestos, lead or metal based pigments, which were deemed safe at some point in time but with modern chemistry it was found out they are not.

    • @amarahc4351
      @amarahc4351 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      it’s like cigarettes , when it was created and distributed it hadn’t been tested/ had only been tested by bias sources, so they had no information on the dangers, leaving it to the people to use the appeal to ignorance to trust it. no one morally goes after the natives for smoking tobacco first and introducing the idea, 3M is more liable because they where responsible to do the testing but if the testing came back safe in that time, that’s not on them

      it worries me because i even used to step into that river and when i was a younger lad i used to take that water for my bong when i was a little stoner back in the days.
      caterpillar the company owns over %50 of the factory land/units that occupy this industrial estate so effectively some of the chemicals or procedures they have on making there products must be getting dumped. the whole thing is you cant really get info on if its illegal or even if the agencies round here know or care.

    Even if they're drinking bottled water. They still get the contamination on them when they shower. The body will absorb it. It's better to invest in a whole home underground water filter and put a faucet filter and a showerhead filter just in case.

    Most human activity , progress has always come at a cost to the environment .
    Ex. Switch a bulb and indirectly you are releasing CO2 .
    All human comforts including the medicine , food , clothing have come at a cost to the environment .
    This is a typical case of NIMBY ( not in my back yard ) .
    This problem is everywhere , we build a dam but bury fertile land there .
    There will always be pros and cons at the end of the day , if pros are more then they win , much like the nuclear power , so useful yet so deadly

    I find it a bit perplexing every time I hear about this sort of stuff. That the US-of-A is considered to be a great country when you have civilians walking around with guns, people can't drink tap water because it's contaminated and we’re you can go bankrupt if You go see the doctor or just want to get a higher education

    If the company was following the procedure designed by the EPA, they are not in the wrong, the EPA/ US govt is. For eg. Agent Orange was developed by Monsanto, but dropping it on Vietnam by planes was not their fault, it was the US army. 3M designed the chemical, because its useful, the SMOU (safe method of use) and disposal protocol has to be worked out by the government.

    I would like to know -- who was there first, the business or the residents? What I think of is, was the business there, in a non residential area, which they assumed would stay that way, and they assumed they could keep their contamination in a small, contained area. And, maybe, even keep it watered down to diminish it's toxicity? Knowing that it would seep down and away from any water supply. Which, they thought, might not have been needed. But, contractors came in , and, with City/Town permission, built around the business without the businesses knowledge? Also, did the business sell their property with the knowledge that they new owners would clean it up, or, contain the area by fence so that no human could access it? I would like to hear from the business. What is their point of view?
