  • Mykola Illyuk, pastor of the largest Slavic immigrant church in the Springfield, Missouri area, spoke at the Springfield City Council meeting, September 8, 2014. A proposed city ordinance would force Christians in the marketplace to participate in events like homosexual weddings. Those in violation of the ordinance could be fined and jailed for six months.
Illyuk was born in the former Soviet Union, where the communist government discriminated against Christians. Christians were persecuted, put in jail, and killed for their faith. The government said that Christians were backward and superstitious. The government created rules that required Christians to deny their faith if they wanted to have good jobs, go to college, or to participate in government.
Illyuk stated, “I came here to America for religious freedom, and now America is becoming more like the Soviet Union. This ordinance would violate the freedom of religion that is guaranteed by the US Constitution. This ordinance would make it illegal for Christian businesspeople to practice their faith in the marketplace. In our church we have many hard working small business owners, including photographers, caterers, and wedding planners. Our religious beliefs do not allow us to participate in events like homosexual weddings. This ordinance would make it illegal for my church members to follow their religious beliefs. We would be subject to fines and could be put out of business. We aren’t trying to force our beliefs on anybody. We want to live at peace with everyone. Please don’t force your values on us. This is an issue of religious liberty.”

The Catholic Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau also opposes the proposed ordinance. Bishop Johnston, in a statement released this week, expressed grave concern: "Do the people of Springfield really want to make criminals out of persons who are merely trying to live their faith? Does the government have a compelling interest in forcing every member of our society to participate in the celebration of same-sex relationships?"

But they got nothing to say about straight women marrying sugar daddy's, and straight men marrying women for sex.
