This was a watershed game for the Oilers. It removed, once and for all, the "emotional" advantage that the Kings had over them since the Gretzky trade. The Kings became the enemy after this - as much or more than the Flames were at the time. The Oilers would win the fifth Cup a few months after this game, easily beating the Kings along the way. And these Oilers would be the Kings in two more playoff series after that (1991 and 1992). Those series wins were very much rooted in what happened in this game and this season.

He was right there with Bobby Clarke on the all-time cheap shot artist list. My favorite Mess the Coward moment was him being challenged by Larry Robinson, and just standing there waving his stick in Larry's face.

Messier was a psychopath, as were so many in those days, before the NHL somewhat clamped down on the intentional injury attempts etc.. Messier loved hurting people, which is a psycho, and had no regard for rules of hockey or decency.

You can tell Messier knows how to fight because only someone who knows how to fight would know how to tie up McSorley decently well and not actually try to fight. It's logical to note that Messier could fight but was not a 'Seasoned' fighter, if he was, he would have fought in McSorley in this example. But why do something when you know you'd lose?
