RAC Rally 2021 - Part 1 Live - Richard Burns Rally

  • The RAC Rally, an epic throwback test of endurance. Set for 320+km over rough gravel stages, in the sun, rain, day and night! The kicker? No Co-Driver! Just your own intuitions and the road. One slip up and the event is over. Broken into 5 legs, can I survive the distance?
This is my first competitive rally for RBR and I couldn't have chosen a more challenging event. Making it to the end will truly be an accomplishment and will take patience and luck to get there.
In what will likely be the first part of at least two, I will challenge the first couple of legs and drive conservatively to bring our Ford Escort to the finish line.
This rally is put on by Janne Laahanen ( / jannelaahanen ) and is a throwback to the rallies of old. It should be a great event! If you are into RBR and have Rallysimfans you can participate in the rally as well until December 19th!

the first advent of pace notes , was Stirling Moss for a 1000 mile road race in Italy his co driver put the road route onto a roll and read them off during the race which they won.
Pace notes for Rallying have always been there since Rallying started in the 50's .
As for the Original RAC Rally was run under blind rally rules . no pace notes allowed . the co driver had to read the stages direct from Road maps.
It was pretty much the last Rally in the world championship to be run in such a way .
that ended because of the workload driving the Group B cars on this marathon rally with next to no rest days .
1985 was the last year for it been a blind rally and rest days were added for safety.
but by 1986 Group B was banned for 1987.
all cars upto the Group B cars used hand brakes especially the Escort Mk 1 and 2 Group B cars could not hand brake du to their primitive 4 wd drive systems . the only Group B cars still to use Hand brakes were the Lancia 0.37 and Renault Maxi Turbo though the latter was built under Group 4 rules yes the Manta 400 and Nissan 240 RS and the Toyota Celica Turbo were classed as Group B by really were closer to the older Group 4 cars.
The RAC rally is something I remember from my childhood and through into my 20's with several stages running through the part of the Country is used to live in. and its then starting point and finish point were all in the midlands where I lived.
with Road by servicing then allowed in was very common to see big works Teams like Ford / Audi/ Lancia taking over local parking lots or petrol stations to service cars.
    golden age of racing.

Comparing trees on the long stage with trees at that amazing Chezh stage, i'd say it's always it's not an age or technical capabilities of engine that matter really, at the end it's in the hands of people who make objects and textures. Looks like at that Chezh stage someone actually went and baked the ambient occlusion on all the tree trunks (and trees in general) and that adds so much life to the final outcome of the image. Still, this long stage is really great, and it feels very natural with the flow/camber/undulations of roads, and i'd always take that over the visual eye candy of some newer games.

Well driven, for the first time without a CO pilot... At some difficult points they sometimes set a specific landmark, in those two long stages it was a green hut... very recognizable. Then you know there's a dangerous turn on the left... remember and you won't go off the track... but respect for your skills...💖
    I happy to follow you...

I know it feels like you're going slowly (I'm just after the third stage) but rallying is slow, and you're still doing well in class and catching the guys ahead. Feeling like you're going too slow is an open invitation to push and ruin the whole rally. Great stream, happy to catch it on VOD.

Its the first mistake when you start playing this kind of games.. trying to push your limits beyond your actual possibilities. I learned that the cleaner you drive better times you get despite not going fast. Its like playing the guitar, you start playing clean and speed up as you progress.

That handbrake comment is only relevant to the AWD Group B'S. So someone must have been having a wee troll. Even the first Audi Quattro had the ability to use a handbrake, Michelle Mouton explains in an interview how her co-driver had to flip a switch on the dashboard to open up the diff.
I'm not sure if the GRP4 designation for the MK2 is an actual world representation. If so, you're running a 2.5 Millington (or equivalent - although there is nothing that one can compare to the 2.5lt Millington Diamond ) engine with 345bhp and 265Nm of torque, a sequential 6-speed dog box with a hydro handbrake (if you choose to) four-wheel disk brakes with in-car bias control. It has coil-over springs all around, removing the rear leaf springs and a 6 point mounted LSD. One of the GRP4 Escorts (Frank Kelly's) was quicker than Ken Block through Moll's Gap, and Ken was running his WRC Escort Cossie.
There's also some incredible footage from Craig Been with a helmet cam driving an MG METRO 6R4 through Moll's Gap and another of him in his GRP4 Escort where he has a very high-speed spin still beating the time he set in the 6R4 by over three seconds. Oh, they were both run in the wet, so one would think an AWD Group B would be a sure thing, but nope, these GRP4 MK1-MK2 Escorts are unbelievable in the right hands.

Rally sim games are like Pump It up for boys haha at higher speeds its really a work of muscular synchronizing and nerves of steel to drive fast without crashing the car in the first tied corner.
PS: Yesterday finally i ended the construction of my sim rig for my G29 wheel.. so im starting to play all kind of racing games. This game, RBR and GPL, are in my opinion one of the hardest games to master. With GPL i feel like im driving on ice. With RBR you feel that every bump in the road matter. You have to drive safetly first and quick as you get the feel of the physics.

When I mean the career mode, I mean, the official career mode of the videogame, not a career mode that was modified. And also, how about using a different driver name like Ryo Watanabe (the final rival of Need for Speed: Pro Street), Jimmy Miller (fictional american driver of the fictional racing team Vectodrome Racing from Race Driver: Grid) or Marcus Brooks (fictional american driver of the fictional racing team Red Desert Racing from Race Driver: Grid)? Just saying, thanks.

Difficult car to choose for a first rally. The lack of power at low revs is annoying. I find the Skoda 130RS more fun to drive and easier (slower too). Now all your audience will install RBR, try the Escort and uninstall some minutes later :) Good job driving it, though!
