As great as Mario's Snowy Showdown is as a story-based troll level, everyone I've seen play it doesn't understand the story. While there's still room for interpretation, the basic premise is that the season is Spring but either the POW or Mario wants it to be Winter. The thwomps, however, prefers spring. So a plan is hatched to get rid of Spring by tossing the spring into the bottomeless depths. Each time you do, the level starts to get colder and more snowy until you finally get it back to Winter. You then have to go through a final showdown battle with the thwomps. At the end, Mario is successful, but Spring still looms, waiting for it's enevitable return.
