    Carbon fiber cloth can be a bitch to work with, that being said this has to be one of the best layups ive ever seen. I had the honor of working for one of the best fiberglassers in the country, JR Franklin. The man had spent 35+ years working with fg and learned a lot of cool tricks, and in my time with him i saw him do incredible things. Most of what we did was on boats but we got to do other odd jobs which were always a unique challenge. He passed recently and ive been watching a lot of your build videos, you remind me a lot of him and i wish you the best. Thank you for sharing your talents with us

      The reason it sounds so thin is those huge bracing struts and bridge block. More mass damping = less low end on an acoustic. On "real" (ie, commercial) carbon fiber acoustics, the bracing is far thinner - thinner than most wood acoustics, even, which are far, far, far, far, far, far, far, FAR thinner than those huge honkin' blocks he used!
      Which isn't to say that what he did was bad - just not up to what people who do this for a living can do.

      He's not wrong about how it could have been better, though. That neck joint is rough and the sound is meh. He said himself it was more of an experiment than an art project or production quality instrument. As an experiment, it was incredible, and a huge success. Burl will use what he's learned here to make other incredible instruments. What I like about him is that most artists like this wouldn't share such an experimental, rough piece, but he doesn't mind explaining his artistic process and showing off his weird experiments. I love it!

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Funny, I don't get the "experiment vs. Art" thing. Okay, so it's not an optimal musical instrument- but wouldn't that make it MORE a piece of art, not less? How can you not call that art? It's not a scientific experiment! It's not very "practical" as an instrument -but it's still art. The English dictionary says this mothertrucker is ART!

    2 things on CFRP: Wear a mask when sanding or cutting the material (I guess you do). Since in your case structural integrity is negligible, you can ignore the orientation of your fibers - but to make it look prettier and avoid any folds or creases, you can cut the individual sheets into more smaller pieces, which better fit your mold. Specifically I would have used 2 sheets for the body - one for the back and one for the sides. It would have avoided the creases you are getting at the body sides/ribs.

And I have to say, as someone who expresses their creativity by sewing, this video gave me a great new idea about how to go about cutting fiddly fabric that is easily frayed or warped. I need to go find some painters tape now. If it works how I think it will, it's a total game changer!

    In Highschool I built an acoustic guitar for my senior project. Been quite a while since then haha. I modeled it after a Martin D-18 that my grandfather bought a couple years after getting back from fighting in the Korean war. He served in the marines and got out in 1952. He bought the guitar in 1954, and even though it's 67 years old it still sounds amazing. The one I built had an okay sound but nowhere near the sound you get from a *real* Martin haha. Since then I've made a few more guitars, a couple of Ukulele's, and even built the body for a baby grand piano. I would love to be able to do what you do as you are an amazing artist and craftsman. Keep up the good work man.

    Some things I like about carbon fiber: It stays in tune longer. It doesn't need bracing, even my 12 string. Meaning it's loud even fingerpicked. Yet it doesn't sound muddy when strummed hard. In fact the clarity at first sounded harsh to my ears but I grew to prefer it. Also the bridge won't lift. If you tune to E for decades it won't warp. Even a 12 string. And you don't need a humidifier or dehumidifier.
