I can never hate the "New" Mario design, I have too many warm memories associated with it, and there's nothing inherently wrong with it, but the "Wonder" design has so much more personality and style to it! I'm honestly jealous of the generation that'll grow up feeling nostalgia for this Mario! He's so cute! I'll always love the "New" look but the "Wonder" look is honestly better in my opinion
Exactly this. Since the release of Wonder, everyone's acting like NSMBU was dogshit all of a sudden. It was a great game with fun level design, interesting enemies and dare I say a beautiful world map. It's just that Wonder improved on all those things and more lmao. Plus same, I have many nostalgic memories of the New series, especially NSMBWii.

When New Super Mario Bros. DS and Wii came out, those animations were fine for the time. The main problem was the fact that we kept getting 2D Mario games that looked like that for the past 15 years. I'm glad they decided to go the extra mile with how this game looks.

I remember hearing about Nintendo having an art principle where, if they're depicting Mario jumping, they should always raise the hand that doesn't cover his face. It matches up to a lot of artwork I've seen and looks the best so I'm glad that's happening in Wonder

Man, i have fond memories of new super mario bros (mostly the earlier ones), but they really outdid themselves with the animation and art direction, and i don't think anyone expected this!
I LOVE the animation for Wonder, it's so cute!! I usually play as Peach but all the characters are so cute and expressive. I especially love the look Koopa Troopers give you when you get too close haha
These new animations have so much more character, I love it! It probably helps that Mario's face is more visible so his expressions can actually be seen.
That's what 10 years of graphical evolution does to ya! To give you an idea, that's about the same amount of time between Donkey Kong and Super Mario World, or the latter and Luigi's Mansion.
This is basically comparing McDonald's to a 4-or-5-star restaurant; New's animations were passable at best, but the expressiveness and pure style of Wonder just blows it out of the water. And the Super Mushroom and Power Down anims look like clay-mation.
For a 2D Mario Platformer Wonder really did a 180 probably even a 320, pre ordered it and now that I finally played it I’m having a lot of fun and online play is a cherry on top.
Wonder is imo one of the most immersive Mario games in the series. The small details really make you believe that this is a real world you're exploring, the animations shown here, the expressions on enemies when they see you, goombas having suprised expression when someone is rolling towards them, etc. It's so good.

The NSMB Mario almost looks ridiculous compared to the detailed animations of the new version. The pipe animations are the biggest contrast. Can you believe Mario just stood still and levitated into the pipe for years?
It's almost like they hadn't changed the animation style in like, 15 years. New Super Mario Bros U was using the same animations as Wii, which was basically just upscaled DS animations. Here, they finally took the time to redo the assets and make them good.
I played Super Paper Mario a lot growing up and I liked how he pulled his hat over his eyes when you crouched in that game. I like that they brought that back. Small detail but very cool imo.
The pipe animations are incredible and such a needed change without being too much. This one was made so well and crafted with a lot of love and passion. Not perfect, but still an excellent game, and the best 2D Mario in years!
I like how they did the online mode too. The levels where you have to do some puzzle solving is fun when everyone uses the emotes to help each other figure it out ❤

Anyone who’s played the past ones shouldn’t spend more than 5 hours just getting to the final castle. (That’s more time than it takes to beat the old ones) Also the game’s official release was yesterday but people started getting the game up to a week early and there was a bug allowed people to emulate it up to a week early too. So for all we know, old Joker up there may have played it and beat the final boss already.
Literally the sheer joy of these animations is what convinced me to get the game. I wanted to see more of it. I'm also obsessed with the ground pound sound effect. It's the little things that matter. Nintendo is really going all-in with their latest games.
This is proof, that not all that is new is bad. A reminder to Nintendo to actually think about what to change instead of giving up on old fans from the start.
What i loved about this is how is clearly made to look like a charmy jaggy handrawn cartoon, while also running at a perfect 60fps. A clear understanding that retro feel is not a free excuse to feel outdated.

Wonder is much better, but local multiplayer is a massive let down I had more fun playing co-op on NSMBU and Wii but Wonder is better off playing singleplayer because the stupid crown and the camera barely zooms out leading to screen deaths more than dying from the actual level.
This just makes me realize jow devoid of life and fun the new super mario series was. Glad that the devs were finally allowed to do something different and fun

I love how enemies faces change when Mario is near them, they get angry, scared etc. Plus the way Mario grabs hit hat after entering a pipe or Elephant Mario wiggling his butt to fit in a door. It all adds incredible amounts of charm.
I'm glad the New era is over. Nintendo used NSMBU too take over the NSMB series, and many tracks from NSMBWii were reused in NSMB2, and NSMBU so on. Mario Wonder looks more interesting and funner than any of the NSMB games. I'm hoping that Nintendo Makes a Mario Wonder 2 due to this game being successfull, and i hope they make a dlc for this game too.
