As someone who works at a hobby store. This definitely is a huge selling feature to help the parent or grandparent who is looking to buy a kid their first hobby grade rc car. It allows them to get a vehicle at a reasonable cost that has the ability to become 4wd later without having to spend hundreds more dollars on a different car like you would have to do if they went with say a 2wd rustler. Also the boost lineup is available with a 7 cell nimh and charger for $40 more which is what we stock since the product is intended for beginners.
I picked up this rig when I was getting back into the hobby about a year ago and still love it, mine did come with a Boost Box. I hadn’t considered switching to a brushless nor had I considered a LiPo but might now.
I started with the Granite Boost because it was on sale. Then I installed the 4wd kit (and had the same experience with the bearings). Then I went a little crazy with 4S slipper and diffs, HR diff carriers and shock bodies, center support bearing, wheelie bar, Typhon wing and a HW Max10 G2 w/3200kv 3665 sensored brushless system. It rips now on 3S.
Mark, much appreciated for the explanation and review. I wasn’t sure what the “Boost” stuff was actually about, and after seeing the video, I think the only reason not to buy the 4x4 brushless, is if someone already planned on modifying it and putting in a crazy powerful set up or something.
One TH-camr who tests a lot of r/c cars, as you do, found with his Granite Boost he improved the performance by adding weight to the rear and switching out the esc to an inexpensive one that handles 3S. With these changes it really woke up the car and made it fun to drive. His perspective and solution was different. Other reviewers believe the speed of the Boost line is perfect for beginners. I think everyone's experiences are different. Your review is based on your experiences.Your ideas are good. One additional comment would be to be careful givng lipos to young drivers.
Great video! In my country it’s cheaper to buy the 2wd version and convert to 4wd and make brushless myself than to buy the already 4wd brushless version. Do you know if the brushless 4wd has any other better components than the 2wd except for electronics?
I think you're a bit jaded, lol! Don't necessarily disagree with you but the Boost does get you started at a cheaper price and handling and speed will be good enough for a beginner. Other 2wd vehicles might be better but they can't be upgraded to 4wd. It's just one more option for people 👍
its almost like the option if you only whant a rc car a traxxas SCT but on a real tight budget go for the 2wd brushed slash, it can be upgraded with motor ESC and lowcg chassi and much more later on. the only downside of that is its still a 2wd platform if its not like me that enjoy my 2wd slash.
I personally own the Vortex Brushless and I agree with you. Gorgon is a better entry car. I think they introduced the Boost cars to make money off of parts plus gives younger kids an opportunity to work on their vehicles and understand how they function more.
Also to add with the BL vwrsion you get adjusrabke turnbuckles, metal input gears, metal crown gears, metal motor mount plate, AND a metal spur. Not plastic. To obtain that from a MEGA or BOOST is substantially more than it is for just the BLX. THIS is why they did the BOOST line with a 2 n 1.
Trucks runs good for my 3 year old son, the granite version. Though the motor crapped out after 2 months. Putting the new Spektrum rebuildable brushed 550 12t motor in to see how it holds up. Figured it be a couple year's before going brushless. Although he drives his brothers big rock 3s with the foam and zip tie behind the trigger, maybe should have just went the 3s route.
Yes I do agree on that. My racer friend, he had a all black TLR 5.0 a couple years ago. This was on a black crc carpet offroad track, you can barely see it coming. Once that place closed and we found a new spot, they used grey EOS type carpet so his car was easier to see. But most racers use white or pop out colors like blue orange silver green yellow. I used to run Blue/silver/orange (Thats how I got my name, Bomb Pop RC).
if the car should be a 2wd slash then later on give it a low center gravity LCG chassi it deservs that. the senton 2wd i have not so much info of but guess its a good car also. im a bit biased twards traxxas and xray as i got a 2wd lcg slash for bashing and track use when i dont run my xray xb2 buggy.
2 👍👍! Thanks for another top-notch video and I really liked the random tech tip! My grandson has an older Stampede and has a pair of NMiH batteries that were reportedly 'dead'. I took the batteries to my local hobby shop (shout out to In Control hobbies in Post Falls Idaho) and Peter ran them through the charge/discharge cycle you mentioned. It took 5 to 7 cycles to get them balanced! They were in pretty rough shape! I haven't heard from my grandson if they are working better but no news from a 13yo boy is probably good news! Thanks for the tip; your advice is spot on! We considered getting him a couple lipos for Christmas but due to the cost of lipos/charger and the age of his truck, I was advised to get him a new NMiH battery this year and consider a new rig next year. What RTR bashers in the $300-$400 range would you recommend for a 14yo? Thanks, Dom
I would never buy it. But if I had a young kid and wanted an easy way to teach them about upgrading slowly and let them slowly learn the difference in better parts, I think it's a nice idea. It's a expensive hobby no matter how you slice it.
The way I see it, the BOOST is more of a platform than an RTR. It's a good base price of $170 and it's open to tons of upgrades (Including all of the 4S line's fully metal internals, the new Mojave's center diff, and then past that point maybe even 4S power to go with all that.) That's kinda what I plan on doing with my boost Vorteks. All with a great base price of $170 so you don't shelf a nice 3S system if you got the 3S. But yeah, I agree.. out of the box, it's quite a letdown. But just with the 4x4 kit alone kinda fixes that. They're designed to be upgraded!
Ok so I agree with it being cheap but with all the upgrades you have to do to make it brushless and 4x4 it's still not as nice as the 3s one that comes with the spectrum internal gyro system and a better controller
For a NIMH batt you don't want it hot but warm. If it is really hot, chances are you charged it at a too high amp and will shorten the life of it.. You can also repair the batt if your charger has a cycle function that will discharge and re peak the batt a few times. .......................Go drive your Infraction
If they made all these RC cars more MOD friendly = more people enjoying the hobby = more sales. Getting nickel and dimed for small parts that come in a "Package" is not a great experience for the consumer. They all do it.
This thing is too heavy for brushed and gets really hot on 2S. The 2wd version has no weight on the tail because mid motor and slides all over the place. Boosting it is a waste of money! Cheaper to just buy the 3s range to begin with. Vortex 3S is too fast for its own good but an awesome ground pounder ripping over big grass areas. Vortex is not really for the skatepark. BTW my christmas rc im getting is the HPI Jumpshot SC Flux for some 2wd fun.
Nah the Gorgon is a lot weaker. For a 2wd its still better as a rustler. Its a good way to start and learn about rc cars i think. You give this to your 8 year old.
You should raffle off some of those rigs just sitting around.
How about this? If this video gets 2000 likes I will give this vorteks away.

Always great information

Price point Dude, Price point.
The price! You can buy one for 169.00 you get started and can cheaply buy upgraded parts!

It should be a brushed 4x4 not 4x2
It’s not 2wd. It’s a broken 4wd. It runs like a handicapped car

I think that is what arrma bwas trying to do with the boost! So people can learn very easy to rebuild and repair the RC!

Perfect timing. I’m debating a traxxas slash 2wd or the Senton 2wd. Trying to get a budget rtr for the backyard. I’d love an Xmas but 💵 👀

If your local track supports arrma get a brushless vorteks, if they support traxxas get a brushless rustler. ;)
If you go brushless put the blx transmission in it or you'll rip the 48p spur to shreds
I think it was supposed to be brushless ready
@MarkSantaMaria you want to put the .8 mod gears in it.
